Games like this when watched, not just felt, really show where we are lacking. For me, far more so than a thrashing to City.
Even with injuries, our defence and midfield were good, particularly the players in the middle, Shaw, Lindelof, Casemiro and Bruno. Then fit Licha and Varane also join that list. Shaw and Lindelof kept getting to first balls and closing down, Casemiro kept recovering possession and Bruno consistently found passes into the right spaces for our attackers. In addition, Rashford was always threatening, always making the right runs and tried pressing.
The problem we had and we've kept having for some time is that our attackers outside of Rashford offer no threat at all. I don't even mean poor production, but truly no threat. Consistently poor touches, unable to take advantage of one on one situations, can't win the ball in the air, can't out muscle defenders and always on the wrong side of the ball. It's a consistent theme, outside of Rashford.
Why was it so apparent. Our attackers couldn't trap anything, and even in instances where they did like Antony, they couldn't do anything with it. At one point, Martial managed to get possession, due to his lack of agility, he had to turn his entire body around so he could dribble to the centre with his right foot, despite the fact he could have made quicker more decisive moves with better technique and body control. Yet he's somehow classed as a good dribbler. Unless the ball falls on a plate to them, with endless space ahead, they don't threaten. Even when they get the space, due to lacking intensity, they can hold the ball up and still do nothing with it.
Now compare that to Brighton. Even with supposedly less talented players in attack, when they played the ball forward, it stuck. Mitoma, Welbeck, Enciso, March and McAllister usually had good touches, were agile and aware enough to keep the ball under pressure, we decisive enough to keep the game moving and we're willing to dribble and take on our players when the space was there to dribble. Only Rashford was willing to do that and has been, which is why he's scored so much. Our midfielders create a lot of opportunities to attack, Rashford is the only one who takes it.
