There isn't a leader amongst them on that pitch. Bryan Robson, Roy Keane, Steve Bruce, Jaap Stam, Scholes et al would never have let that shambles unfold yesterday. Never.

I agree that there was no real leadership on the pitch yesterday, but days like this happen to all squads and every player listed in the post above has been part of shite games at one point or another, maybe the biggest difference is Keano, who would have lost his temper and been sent off!

Keown: The defenders played badly today because Jose destroyed their confidence by going in market publicly for new defenders.

I swear that he is only in a job as the BBC are using him as a type of clickbait through his anti-united WUMing antics.

Jose sniffing around a defender may be a minor contributory factor, but that performance is down to both players. Lideloff just does not seem cut out for the Prem, at best he is a below average all-rounder with standout passing abilities, yet he regularly fails to meet this fairly low standard. He has had enough time to adjust and I now think he is our biggest flop since Sir Alex retired. I put that down to his mental robustness and the threat of new signings would probably weaken him - I doubt that would have made a difference yesterday though as he is already starting from such a poor base.

Bailley looks a shadow of himself since his last long injury lay-off. However, I still have faith that he could come good again. Unlike Lideloff, he has greater mental strenght to keep trying, while his physical attributes are far better. From the outside looking in, I believe he is the type of player who will up his game under the threat of competition. I put yesterday down to a particularly bad day at the office - saying that, it is now his responsibility to find consistently high form while also providing leadership to the backline. If not, then I'd say it's offski come the next window along with the other deadwood in the backline (currently Rojo, Jones and Lideloff)

Time to go 352 until we sort this mess out. Potentially plasters over two problems until the next window (the other being our criminal failure to solve the RW position). Unfortunately the issue I have is who to play alongside Bailley and Smalling? Jones and Rojo will likely be injured come Halloween (and would be rusty until their next inevitable injury anyway). So it may need to be Matic given that we've sent our two best prospect out on loan again (Tunzebe and TFM)

Not really even sure were to start on yesterdays game, from the 1st minute the team never looked up for it, surely they knew exactly what Brighton were going to do, not sure there is a single player who I would mark over 5 for the game they were that bad, lost the dressing room for me and just don't see any way he's winning this back, lack of real quality again, can understand Jose arguments about needing a CB and RW because they 2 positions look so weak, but understand Ed when yesterday 2 of the CB's Jose brought in were terrible and have been most of the time. we looked tired and jaded and Christ its the 2nd game of the season, had no idea's on how to break down brighton in the 2nd half, countless long balls in to the box that was it, very worrying signs.

For me were making unforced errors in possession because were farting about with it in the back line, playing or trying to play intricate, tight one touch square and backwards stuff 30-40 yards from where the ball should really be and going in the wrong direction. The clearance to Fred with his back to play, which put him and ultimately the team in the shit typifies just how bad our distribution from the back was yesterday.

I said it weeks ago - to howls o abuse - but we are little more than also-rans this season. Even gary Neville struggled to find positives because there weren't any. I can't name a man of the match because there wasn't one. The closest to it was fellaini who a least showed some passion for the shirt. Awful... and I wonder when the blind here will start telling us we'll beat Spurs 5-0

It's pretty obvious that we have papered over big cracks by winning a couple of minor trophies and qualified for the CL. It's good that we have done those things but there's been a huge financial outlay to make it happen and there is still zero cohesion on the pitch.

I feel like united have had no consistent idea of what to do for about 5 years now it's absolutely mental how we allst lack direction after all this time.

I absolutely agree. Fellaini deserves praise for at least showing that he wanted it.

I haven't seen a United team in this state for a long time, second game of the season or not. Huge reaction needed against spurs now.

We will defeat Spurs. We're so predictable when it comes to results. These crap performance always end up being followed by a big win before losing against the next small team at their home. Scenario of the last 5 years ( except Moyes year ).

Results based football regardless of style is fine, as long as you can get the results. United fans would accept that.

I think the worst thing for me at the moment is how all the players we’ve been hoping would be amazing for us are turning out to be incredibly disappointing. Rashford sticks out as the most frustrating (Martial too but he’s just lost it lately). Rashford hasn’t been the cause of our problems but he’s been so inconsistent I’m starting to lose patience with him. He was supposed to be the next best thing - I know he’s only 20/21 but he needs to make this season his big, big season or I could easily see us getting another player in for his position.

I'll be missing many matches if we carry on playing so dull/boring. At least when LVG installed the boring possession play we had the ball. With this current state of play we have less of the ball and then lose the ball in quick succession. Pogba holds on the ball way to long and gets closed down and the rest of the midfield can't string a ball together. We look so lost with no identity.

CBs stayed too deep in possession all game, didn't even try to take Brighton's 2 forwards out of the game by carrying/passing the ball to our midfield in their half, which meant that Mata Pogba and Martial were picking up the ball with two banks of 4 between them and the goal.
Don't know how we rectify this, Lindelof is supposed to be a ball playing defender isn't he?

It's was bad errors at the back, right side of defence it was same against the foxes. But young was put there and same thing happens 1st goal from that side 2nd as well from the corner that side. This is just the sort of display I was dreading. Blame whoever you want but the team were a disgrace for just about the whole match. Defending was atrocious as a group and individually. A competent schoolboy would not have made the tackle for the penalty, the ball was going away from goal and the Brighton player did not have control. There were so many examples of poor play I could write pages. Instead, all I will say is that if there are more examples like Sunday we will very soon be fighting for our Premiership lives.

@Kag still think Toby isn't worth 100m to us? Hard to buy a top CB these days and he's the perfect age to up the level of those around him. Agree he's not worth that much but seems to be the going rate in these mad times! By Christmas when I assume we'll be back in for him it may be too late to salvage this season. I guess to the money men here as long as we are top 4 that saving of 30-40m makes sense.

Its the lack of fight and cohesion on the pitch that worries me. There is no game plan. Even Arsenal who were have laughed at this week and last, are clearly playing in a certain way after 2 games under Emery. Lukaku was totally isolated yesterday, like the 20+ matches where he was last season. Lingard game on and basically ran in a straight line the whole game. It really was a mess, Brighton were comfortable and we look incapable of raising the tempo and making space anywhere on the pitch, and the unforced errors show how unprepared/lacking match sharpness we are for this season.

Surely we can only improve.

I had a dream last night where I tried to explain to my friends how embarrassing it felt to watch us play like a bottom 5 team yesterday, and when I woke up I just thought - 'yup, that pretty much sums it up'. I know we're only two games into the season but everything is pointing to it just being a continuation of the previous, i.e mostly frustrating and everyone hoping for a piece of individual skill to save the day 8/10 times, with 4 of those 8 being De Gea.

I just can't understand why it seems to be so easy to play against us? We have a manager who built his name on building teams which are extremely hard to play against, we have a squad that is one of the most expensive in Europe, yet we're playing like a team that was just promoted from the Championship and haven't gotten used to the pace and skill of the PL.

I'm usually pretty omptimistic, but when I see teams like Leicester without Vardy&Mahrez coming to OT and pressing us back for long periods of time and fecking Brighton making us look like a pub team I'm really struggling to see the positives.

Can we cut Fred some slack? There was always going to be a learning curve for him, you don't go from playing in the Ukrainian league to the Premier League over the night. Give him time to adapt. The talent is there.

I too am concerned about Rashford. He looks to be doing a lot of running but it's mostly aimless. He's got a new hairdo and tattoos, and the no.10 shirt but he's looking far less threatening than when he burst onto the scene. Huge season for him.

Not slating Fred at all, but stating a fact that he looked fazed out there. It says more about the rest of the team than he himself. He was getting his head up and looking for passes but there was no intelligent movement in front of him.

Have made peace with this. Seems weird but from now on I'll expect a loss every time we play a small team on their pitch, as we never show up there for some reason. Can see this result getting repeated a lot.

At the day of the day, looks lik JM knows exactly hat is needed to move the team forward. The CEO was supplied with the names, and a decision was made that the names were not what the CEO/Board were of suffiicient sell on/social media levels to be a value signing. Thereby ignoring the improvement needed to challenge Citeh.

Whilst a number of people who dislike JM will suggest Woody knows all, he has contributed big time to what we are seeing. Dividends and profits before a successful team, and there is a wonder why we look like plonkers .

Apart from the panic buying under LVG, Woody has chased a couple of galactico signings to fuel his idea of what is needed and come up empty handed. The club needs a really good look at their set up and what is needed to compete. If not, whoever gets appointed as the new manager will fall into the same trap as Woody is the captain and commander of the good ship Glazer Utd
