Bayern Munich 4:3 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Bayern also went into cruise control every time they went up by two goals, and only switched back on each time we pulled one back (at which point they almost instantly scored again). They could have scored six today if they had really wanted to.
I agree

Well done lads! We scored 3 away goals against Bayern! What a match.

I think the momentum thing is a little tough given we got a goal back at the start of the half, before immediately having the wind taken from us by that penalty.

I also don't think our goals were hugely random, we were getting plenty of joy down the left side all game with all of Rashford, Reguilon and in the latter stages Garnacho.

Not to say I think we were great or deserved a win (or even a draw given how we collapsed defensively after the third goal), but I feel better after that match than I did after Brighton.
I don’t know man. It’s just the patterns that are too leading for me.

We compete for 20mins while the opposition is figuring us out but the moment they press go, we can’t react or counter it. We are losing tactical battles each game. I don’t like it.

We make our own shite luck, but man we are unlucky on top of certain issues we have. (I know they were better than us)

Could of at least had a draw, but not this year.

Oh well, sell the facking team Glazers, that is all that matters.

Positives:

Reguilon is just as good or better than Shaw (he can't stay healthy anyway)
Rasmus will get better and better, I like him.

Yes, we are not playing really good, but we are just snake bit at the moment. With injuries, VAR non goals, weird PK calls, poor GK plays, balls just out....

Bruno needs to learn to play to his ability and his coach needs to teach him. The last goal (or maybe 3rd goal) was his fault because he tried a difficult one touch pass that was easily intercepted. He also tried a bouncing outside the foot pass earlier that wasn't even close to his target. There were at least 4 or 5 other instances when he tried a tough pass and didn't pull it off.

This match hopefully will be are turning point and we'll start getting some convincing wins.

To those complaining about Bruno giving the ball away. That’s his MO. Also, we are soft as cotton.

I am surprised people call it a legit penalty. Is there even something called a legit penalty when it comes to handball? The rule is open to interpretation, which leads to referees deciding it based on what they feel like on that day. Unless UEFA has any extra guidelines which force the ref to make a clear decision.

Eriksen was hardly flapping his arms around and had no reaction time

I am happy that I didn't stay up to watch this crap, I caught the highlights on YouTube. Another crap performance, just 6-7 months into the season and I already know what to expect. Onana is simply a weak goalkeeper, ETH spend money on a wrong player. I think this money could be better spend on a outfield player. I expect United to sell Onana for safer hands in 2 years time. Goals coming from cut back, midfielders are left with an open goal to aim for. This happens again and again, we will continue to see opponents scoring for fun. Time for Glazers to sell so we get another 1 billion to undo the wrongs from ETH.

We have an easy run of games from this weekend till 29th October -- against City. Plus we will have most of the injured players back before that.

That is the real test then.

There's not too much to complain about the Eriksen handball in a vacuum but we had a way, way more egregious handball not given against Tottenham that likely could have turned the result around completely. That's what makes this so frustrating.

Everyone's kicking us when we're down, referees included.

1. 4-3 is respectable scoreline considering all the situations, i was expecting 5-0 loss,
2. Conceding 2 soft goals (again) is unacceptable, what were they doing during the training?
3. If Ambrabat is fit then he should be our deepest midfield, change formation to midfield diamond with Casemiro occupying RM just like Gattuso only better.
4. Where was our midfield for Bayerns second goal?
5. Good striker's goal by Hojlund.
6. Scott McTominay is a disgrace. You might think being academy product and average footballer would make him play 200% every game but how many times you saw him jogging during the match? disgraceful.
7. Next game against Burnley away is the real test.

I don't know why some of our players, even the more experienced ones, would hold on to the ball for so long that they managed to evade the first challenge but eventually lost the ball to the second or third defender closing down, while there were obvious options to pass to. Is it because of the adrenaline rush when they get past the first defender that gives them the illusion that they can dribble past the whole defense by themselves? Really puzzling to see.

Wasn't sure what to make of it in the end.

I didn't think Bayern were very good? Apart from Musiala who was miles above everyone else on the pitch.

Apart from 20 minutes after their nonsense penalty goal and about a 10 minute spell in the first half I didn't even think they were the better team. Away to Bayern you'd expect to be on the bsck foot for about 89 of the 90 minutes.

On the other hand we just decided to beat ourselves without them really having to do much. We concede so many pathetic goals as soon as any of our first choice back 4 are missing. Our midfield dies half way through the first half and about 5 minutes into the second.

I saw Scholes etc. saying the scoreline flattered us but I'm not sure it did. We could have lost 7-2 but we also missed an open goal, Mctominay fell over when he should have scored, Eriksen nearly scored, Garnacho missed a good chance, so did Regulion. It was just a bit of a silly game. I don't think Bayern are winning the champions league if their defence gives up close to 10 chances at home to a struggling United side missing half it's players.

How I perceive this game from our end will probably depend on how we react to it at the weekend. E.g. if Rashford puts in the same shift and team ethic as he did last night, or reverts to the bargain bucket Ronaldo mode we saw against Brighton. Not specifically just Rashford buy u thought he was the most glaring example in terms of difference.

Also I know everyone wanted us to sign Kane and I don't doubt his goalscoring ability, but he's just such an insufferable cheating idiot to watch play. They're 3-1 up and he's rolling about on the floor nearly taking the linesman out because someone nudged his back slightly. He managed to get his own team mate booked in the process. Aside from that and scoring a penalty his main contribution was ruining most of Bayern's attacks by thinking he was still at Tottenham and could just position himself wherever the feck he felt like

I had said before we got him that Onana was a walking problem.
He's good as a sweeper but not as a goalstopper as United had in many goalkeepers.
I use to see him with Inter and he made many mistakes.

It shouldn't be a penalty, and if the rules say it is then it should be changed. I honestly think they don't help the refs here. Penalties are like 0.7 of a goal on Xg, they shouldn't be given for things that innocuous. I don't know why refs can't be given the power to award an indirect free kick for something like that, or a free kick on the closest edge of the penalty area where the incident occurred.

The way the penalty was awarded last night was so weird as well. Reading the reports this morning, it sounds like VAR initially cleared it but then checked again...also the ref had a really resigned look on his face after watching it on the monitor, almost like he was really reluctant to do it. I wonder if the officials thought it was fine but then someone reminded them that the remit for handball in UEFA comps is different? It was very strange.

Just re-watched the highlights and I really don’t get how Davies’ tackle on Pellistri wasn’t a penalty? He’s the wrong side, tackles through the player to get the ball, and from the only replay I could see he caught the player first. Were there other replays that showed a cleaner tackle?

That’s a guaranteed penalty if it’s the home team in champions league. Wrong side, tackling through the player. I’m not going to argue it would have changed the game as we’d only have found new ways to throw it away, but we sure aren’t getting the rub of the green at the moment. Marginal offsides, marginally out of play, dodgy penalties, penalties not given, there have been a litany. Maybe it’s all because PGMOL applogised to Wolves!

It would be nice if a referee has the guts to stick to his original call. They never do

Penalty - for me yes especially from the overhead angles, Eriksen's had is a distance from his body when it hits it, if it were a Bayern player most if not all would be calling it a penalty IMO, but I understand those saying it should not be a penalty, and from the initial replays I was not convinced but obviously a divisive decision.

As for the game in general, yet again we looked good in attack, I think Pelistri may not be the player we need but his positioning and running in behind clearly shows what is missing when Antony plays, will be interesting to see when Amad returns, or even playing Mount right.

Bruno for everything he does just gives the ball away too often too cheaply, which if we had a solid backline and midfield would be acceptable, but the way things are now it just leads to attack after attack.

Casemiro looked a bit better, Eriksen not a deep mid, Reguilon good in attack but defending was dubious

Will be interesting to see what impact Amrabat can make, he might be the players that makes everything else click into place,

Overall Bayern were at times poor, and will need to improve to beat Madrid, City etc... but TBH I think we can beat them in the return fixture, we just go to pot at times, after the Onana spill we should have locked the game down, we had been on top up to that point and there was clearly no need to panic but that is just what we did

For the vast majority of the game, our midfield was non existent, Case and Erikson offered no protection to our back 4, in fact Case wasnt involved in the game until we were 3-1 down, he just strolled around the pitch doing nothing, very strange. We really need some young midfielders with energy and drive, playing 30 + year olds in midfield is a recipe for disaster.

My heart was in my mouth every time he received the ball with his back to the goal inside our box. He's so good at finding runners arriving late and we suck so bad at marking those runs.

If we don't concede that opener, skip the soft pen, and scored another six goals, that would be Bayern's heaviest and highest scoring defeat at home.

It’s strange when things are going against you. They do seem to pile up. Lots of good performances/ lots to look forward to. In ETH I trust. Gutsy from Onana to do press. Rashford needs to get his mojo back. Regulion is a good addition; Onana too. Can’t wait to see Amrabat. I think we qualify from this group.

Much like the Arsenal game, disappointing result but promising performance and mind the insane injury list that any team would suffer performance-wise.

Why? Because DDG didn't let in any goals as soft as that last season?
As you know, Dave was capable of his off nights. But Dave on a good night… Of course a mistake can happen to anyone and Onana was good in general. Made one great stop.

We were playing in Moldova this time last year.

I'll take the 3 goals against Bayern, with a matchday squad of only 14 senior players available.

We will improve when we get our players back from injury.

You can't concede those type of goals away to a team like that.

We done ok the first 25 minutes and then we fall apart in 5 minutes.

We did alright to fight back, but Bayern could and should have had 6. However, we didn't get battered and hopefully can pick through some positives.

However, if we can't beat Burnley at the weekend or drop points to the likes of Copenhagen or Galatasaray then all hell will break loose again.

Couldnt handle Musiala taking the ball in and running at us among other problems

Onana obviously needs to do better on the first goal. Had enough of those from DDG

Casemiro is a good central midfield option for us with his passes in behind the defence for Rashford and the attackers and his goal threat, but he doesnt like to track back enough to be our only "real" DM on the pitch.

Reguilon had problems defending against Bayern's wingers a few times as you would expect but going forward was good. Put in at least 2 crosses that someone should be turning in at the back post, and Pellistri missed a chance there too.

Martial had a pretty good cameo off the bench running at players

I don't know how anyone could watch that and think it was good or even OK. Being alright for 25 minutes isn't good enough.

I'm thinking Ten Hag may need to change the approach as the 'transition' style is not working as far as I can see. We're starting well enough but not taking any early chances and conceding so many chances and goals as well. If anything we're allowing other teams to score through not defending their transitions. After we go behind the performance is generally scrappy and poor overall.

Real Madrid of the last few years were the pinnacle of transition football for me, the conceded a lot of posession but actually defended well and were really dangerous when they went forward. We look like neither of those things apply in 80% or 90% of each match we play.

I'd like to see us keep more possession in the middle and up top and just do the basics well.

People are taking about a run of easy games but I doubt that they'll be easy for us. I feel like he needs to win a good few soon though or the team won't come back from it and will end up similar to Chelsea last year.
