 Scholes in response to your man there!

Smug presenter: "When you say us Paul, do you mean Manchester United?"

Grumpy Scholes: "Well I'm not from bloody France am I?"

Job done. Got some big breaks.

Why does this team take so long to get going pretty much every single game? The first 20 minutes are usually a pointless watch.

Bizarre game. Didn't think we were that great, especially in the first half, and some players had a pretty poor game. However Pogba was an absolute beast, probably his best performance for us.

Take off Fellaini and turn into a different side funnily enough.

Martial was brilliant as was Pogba who definitely should have scored, Ibra did well and had a typical poacher style game got his goals.

Happy with it tonight even though it could have gone badly if they had scored.

Good result but we only played well in short patches and the scoreline flattered us. Didn't think it was a peno for us, and thought Blind's brainfart was one, though it didn't really look bad at the time.
We typically missed clear cut chances through out the game. St Etienne created some chances but we created a lot more and clear cut ones which we predictably missed.

So no the scoreline doesn't flatter us. We could have put 6 past them tonight.

Good result, some good performances but I still feel we should play a lot better as a team.

St. Etienne lacked a bit of quality. We could have easily lost this match.

Oh and without Zlatan we would be fecked, he is simply great.

St Etienne played a good game but their finishing let them down in the end, we were very fortunate to win by a three goal margin but I'll take it. I'd still be feeling a bit cautious about the away leg if St Etienne play as they did tonight.

 That was so good from Scholes!

I think Ibra is particularly guilty of this. Touch is all over the place until he warms up and goes into god mode.

Positive result all front:
1. 3-0 cushion. Seem to be able to score well in EL home game & we actually got penalty call in EL.
2. Herrera gets a clean plate next round
3. Score from direct freekick (even though quite scrappy)
4. Zlatan's first hattrick

We were poor in the first half but much improved in the second,

Brilliant

First half they were a lot better - they had way too much space behind us every time we lost the ball. We actually won a penalty ... think someone in the match thread predicted that with change in competition :)

Speed kills - when we make use of our players with pace and also move the ball quickly, we can be devastating. Hope Mou continues to use that.

Only down side of being in Europe - having to listening to Alexi Freakin Lalas - he is absolutely the worst.

Good result, few lucky breaks but will take that. Think we deserved the win. Pogba was immense, Herrera can get his rest now as he was intense but a bit sloppy. Lingard gave us some more energy and pressed well. Definitely played better after afroman went off.

The scoreline flattered us considering the first half. Martial and Valencia were excellent in the second. Smalling solid throughout.
Why do people keep saying this. Despite St Etienne nice 15-20 minutes spell in the first half, they failed to created clear chances and hardly bothered Romero while we missed clear cut chances and were typically wasteful in front of goal.

Could have easily scored a lot more tonight, so how is the scoreline flattering us?

We were poor in the first half but much improved in the second, great result and hopefully job done ahead of the second leg.

Nice to see Zlatan bag a hatrick, even if it was slightly fortuitous. Pogba was very good along with Martial, Rashford did very well for our second. No complaints really apart from our lethargic start.

Could we please rest players now? The big game is sunday 26th. Be ready for it Jose.

We're winning these games now despite performances, last few seasons it would have been a crap result to match the performance.

Great result with some excellent play. I think we'll need a strong defence out there, they got behind the defence tonight to create at least two clear chances. Could have been a very different scoreline. We'll need to have some speed in attack as well to keep them on the back foot as much as possible.

More or less the team that played against Hull plus a strong bench for Sunday, imo.

Lol...Doesn't he looks more like King Eric? :)

The eyebrows are all wrong for me.
Definitely think he's Benzema's clone:

I think it's always difficult for EPL sides to adjust to European football after the winter break and St Etienne are an awkward side if ultimately they lack quality in the final 3rd. United struggled in the first half, but after a tactical change at half time I thought United found their stride and totally dominated. A word of caution; there will be far tougher challenges ahead in this competition. Special mention to Pogba, who I thought was absolutely outstanding tonight.

3-0. Hopefully that's job done.
Pogba & Martial were the standout performers for me, despite Zlatan's hattrick.

For the second leg I'd love to see a front three of Martial-Rashford-Mkhitaryan, would give us immense pace on the counter.

The penalty was soft but feck it, we deserved one after the countless stonewall penalties we've had turned down domestically.

Perfect night really. 3 goals, clean sheet, tie virtually won.

Ibra scored 3 without playing well. Says it all to me, the guy is a machine at 35!

I thought pogba was good but not as good as the commentators made out. Controlled the middle well but carelessly gave the ball away in some dangerous areas.

For me martial was man of the match. Looked so dangerous, some great runs, tore the defence apart a number of times. I hope he continues this form!

Overall, we played okay, st Etien were pior at finishing and we capitalised on luck. Deserved 3 0 but France will be very very tough. Would be happy with 1 0 there, get the job done and rest a few players!

I laughed at that, he might not be the greatest pundit ever but he's a good laugh, I enjoy it when he's on for our games.
