FA L FA Cup Quarter-Final

Manchester United 1:2 Arsenal

Post-match discussion

Mon, 09 March 2015

My assessment of the match goes as followed below. Agree with me or flame me, I don't mind. I don't intend to leave anyone indifferent at all.

The game sums up as there are 3 little bastards out there who should be ashamed to even dare wearing the Manchester United shirt today: Di Maria... WTF were you thinking by grabbing the ref? Smalling... half-guilty on Arsenal's first goal for not covering his zone. Valencia... guilty on one goal and a half by leaving his corridor on the first goal and then making a pussy-assed pass on Arsenal's second goal.

Well, players like that are not men. They are mommy cocksuckers. They don't have balls between their legs. People like that make me puke. THEY HAVE NO ROOM ON MY TEAM!

We were a pile of shite, the amount of mistakes and bad decisions all over the pitch from the start are too many to mention. We created feck all, launching balls at Fellaini seemed like plan A and when we needed a goal you have a 280k a week striker on the bench who you knew was never going to come on. At this point it is a mess, it is better than under moyes granted, but at this stage of the season with the personnel we have at our disposal to not have some recognisable team or game plan is not very encouraging given the financial outlay and the expectations of the club. Our attack is basically blunt, which is mind boggling when you look at the attacking talent we have, you're watching games in fear of conceding the first goal cos you just can't see where we are going to get 2 to win the game. Don't forget either that De Gea made 2 incredible saves to keep it respectable.

Not surprised at the loss but after seeing the first half I thought we had a chance. To be honest we cannot regain our former glory with the current set of players. We always had world class defenders and midfield players and pretty good strikers. Now we still have pretty good strikers but very weak midfielders and defenders.
I blamed Moyes for ostracizing Vidic and Evra as well as ruining Rio. Promising Rooney the captaincy while Vidic and Evra were still playing was bound to make them look for new pastures. Rio had just made the prem team of the year for '12-13 due to Fergie's careful management of his games and training. Moyes came and played Rio in about 5 or 6 consecutive games at the beginning of '13-14 and he went downhill from that.
Now we were left with young players of potential but definitely not world class. Vidic, Evra and Rio with proper management would have been still useful up to this season.
Mata and Herrera were really Moyes' choices. The latter was being courted before LVG took charge. Those two could not make any other top 4 team's starting eleven. Herrera would not even make Arsenal's bench and Mata would struggle to be there.
Neither Janu nor Di Maria are more skillful on the ball than Nani and the former is worse than Nani when it comes to decision making and the latter is worse than Nani when it comes to losing the ball.
Young looks good in this team because our midfield is crap. Blind is decent and so is Carrick but world class they are not.
Rooney is only as good as the players around him. One should not expect himto take control of a game and win it for us, he does not have that skill or technique level.

The only world class players we have, besides De Gea, are Van Persie and Falcao but in this team they are made to look like jokers.
I am all for giving LVG more time because we need a clear out in the summer.

 this made me laugh more than I should.

Just seen their 1st goal. What the fe.ck was Valencia doing there and where was he going. completely left his side open..

Absolutely distraught after this. We lost both the match and our integrity today.

Firstly Di Maria's conduct was abhorrent, the referee was well within his rights to send him off. He genuinely looks as if he doesn't give a shit about the club. Januzaj was similarly disappointing, something like the 4th dive he's had, Fergie would simply not have tolerated it.

The selection of Valencia at RB was ridiculous, whilst he his relatively good at attacking he has absolutely no positioning or discipline to play RB. Van Gaal has effectively ended Rafael's Manchester United career for no apparent reason. Fellaini playing the full match whilst Herrera was subbed off wasn't surprising but it seriously makes me question LVG's judgement. Mata - the most intelligent and skilful player we have also had to watch from the stands, another player who's United days are limited. I'm presuming that Luke Shaw was injured, anyone know? Overall tactically LVG fecked up.

Referee had a good game in my opinion, Arsenal probably ought to have had a penalty, don't think he should be made a scapegoat whatsoever.

And that's the problem, he's a permanent crock. Then when he recovers from injury he needs a bit of time to come back to his best and then he promptly gets injured again...

So are Smalling, Jones and Evans but they get to play. The excuse that he doesn't get picked because 'he is a crock' doesn't hold.

Apart from 2 mistakes which cost us 2 goals.
That misweighted pass was awful yes. I'll base my opinons on 90 minutes of good play and you base yours on the replay of a split second error. Valencia was awesome this match, he's made a poor mistake for a defender - which he is not.

You're right. Thought Rafael got injured before this game for some reason.

One of those things that belong in the "weird feelings of football" thread.

Good post. I'd add - Shaw seemed to be struggling with Chamberlain a little. If it was tactical it would also have made sense. In the end he went off injured pretty early second half anyway. And Januzaj went looking for the penalty but was definitely tugged (outside the area) we can agree to disagree about whether that constitutes a dive or not

Switching Herrera for Carrick removed the link between defense and attack. It was mainly dump it to Fellaini after that. Arsenal took control of the midfield in the 2nd half because of that change. I would have removed Fellaini and replaced him with Carrick while placing Di Maria in Rooney's place and pushing the latter further forward.

Even if he played good he coust us 2 goals in the end which means he didnt play that good.
He shouldnt be excused cause he's not a defender.

How can people blame the referee? What did he do wrong?! Honestly. He made two great and correct calls in giving Januzaj and Di Maria cards. They were the clearest dives you will see tonight.

It's a joke that Fellaini got away without a yellow for so long

Not exactly sure the Di Maria one was a clear dive, but I thought the ref had an ok game tbh.

Another clearout. How many times can we have a clearout just so he can eventually get it right. He doesn't have a clue how to manage in the PL. Fullstop.

Still shocked at the lack of chances we made tonight. We just didn't look like scoring at all. Odd feeling to have when watching United.

He was right. Valencia was the only player on the pitch who created two goals today. MOTM.

If I'm kind enough, I would say Valencia was guilty on one goal and a half since Smalling shared responsibility on the first. But I also have a similar feeling about Valencia tonight.

Even though we were far from outstanding in the first half, I though we played with a lot more desire, pace and attacking intent than for a lot of this season. Our defense has let us down again on both goals. You cannot concede these sorts of chances at this level or you will be mediocre at best. The second half we got far worse. A few of the players started to lose their control and composure, obviously the main culprit ADM. Another damaging blow to the morale of our squad and I think this result leaves us fragile for our run of tough fixtures. I strongly doubt a top 4 finish by us and think 6th is more likely than even 5th. Most of the teams around us just seem to have a lot more cohesion and belief where our players seem afraid and lacking any team tactic understanding.

Welbeck and Bellerin were clearer/just as clear. It's the inconsistency which pisses people off.

The Januzaj yellow was a great call tbf. Also, very embarrassing. What the hell was he playing at?

He cost us one goal, the first one he was poor for, but positions should also be covered by other players when someone is tracking a run. I'm not placing 100% blame on Valencia for the first goal. He did excellent after it and consistently played well except for a sloppy backpass.

He might not be a rightback but he could played the wing and midfield with a perfomance and technical ability he displayed today. Great touch, beat and dispossessed players and played the right passes. Really good stuff.

1. Di Maria what an earth are you thinking
2. Smalling - please leave
3. Jones - grow some sodding brains you pathetic person
4. Rooney - played well
5. They won because we gifted them goals, nothing more.
6. At least we lost in the cup and not the league
7. New we weren't gonna get a result today. Too predicatble
8. Adnan - grow up son your playing for Manchester United ffs maybe one day you will be the star man but not any time soon. Play with some intelligence
9. Van Gaal - not making the right decisions. What was you thinking taking Herrera off seriously. We was bossing the game.
10. Valencia - not even a good enough winger let alone a good enough right back. Get rid

This game was actually an improvement on the game we won at the Emirates earlier this season..

I agree with that tbf. That game was horrible, yet will inevitably be forgotten to posterity because of the result. Though it was at least an away game, early in the season, for a side that could still be argued to be going through transition.

My biggest problem with tonight was not the overall performance (at least in the first half) but the conservatism of the HT substitutions. Bringing on two defensive players in a home tie we were drawing, on 45 minutes, seemed odd for any team, let alone Manchester Utd. He obviously counld't have predicted the red, but it had alreadly lowered our potency, as well as obviously reducing our options after it. More to the point, it seemed like the kind of sub you'd only make after at least an hour of a game you were winning. It was risk averse at a time when there was no cause for it.

And it's not like it was out of character either, he did the same thing against Newcastle last week, which he got away with because of their last minute clusterfeck, and seems to have become a trend in his attitude since the Leicester loss...

I'm still a supporter of LVG, and not gearing up to rant mode yet, but I am getting worried by his current mentality. Yes it's an improvement of sorts, but most of our deficiencies in that away game were still present tonight. We were just a little more proficient at making up for them, rather than anything approaching solving them. A whole 4 months later.

We seem to be diving a lot these days.

I've actually come on here looking for a "have we lost our way" type of post. We are a club of spitting, diving, underperforming players. I can't believe what I'm seeing. The ironic part is we thought we were too good for Mourinho, and now look how our players behave. Sad.

A much needed win at Old Trafford for us and something that keeps our season alive! I'm delighted.

First half was a cracking game, you created good opportunity - mainly with direct balls it has to be said (nothing wrong with that) however thought we had very good opportunities to break and didn't use the ball well enough. Personally could understand LVG's decisions. Wanted to tighten it up in midfield and chamberlain was getting the better of Shaw.

Second half was a scrappy game and was going to be determined by either a moment of magic, a set piece or a mistake so thank you Valencia! After that I have to say I thought we defended very well and in the end deserved the victory - should have finished it off on the counter.

Didn't think Michael Oliver had that bad a game infact thought he was pretty good. Personally I wouldn't of sent of Di Maria but thought Fellaini commited about 10 fouls in that game so probably should of gone. The Bellerin one is tough imo. It was his second foul - are we now at the point where if you commit 2 fouls near the opposition box you should get sent off?

In the end fine margins decided the game - don't think there's a lot between both sides. On a technical side of things we have the better players, there were times today where I felt we comfortably passed our way out of possession as oppose to you who looked quite nervous and you could sense a mistake and looked your most dangerous with long balls but that really could just be a a confidence issue. Not sure LVG is the right man to take you forward if i'm being honest but might just be kneejerk.

The subs were poor, but valencia and di maria made winning the game an impossible task.

Otherwise i think we played well.

Aside from our mistakes defensively I thought we put in a great performance. I'm looking forward more and feeling less afraid for our next fixtures.

Gutted to be out of the cup. It might not be as big as it used to be, but it is synonymous with the history of the club and some of our greatest success stories have come in it and it is such a shame to not be adding to it this year. However on the balance of play, Arsenal were the better side and deserved the win. Their fans were great too, never heard an Arsenal fan open their mouth in a game ever but they certainly found their voice tonight.

First half was dead even with both sides playing good attacking football. Thought we scored a great goal by Rooney who had a very good game. With a bit of luck we could have been in front at the break. Second half we started brightly but quickly faded. Jones looked totally out of it, our play became slower and we struggled to impose ourselves. Jones should be shot for that back pass, he should have been aware that Welbeck would be onto it quickly. Game might have been different if Di Maria or Smalling had took their chances but oh well.

Don't have any complaints over our bookings or Di Maria's sending off. We were fouling a lot and it Angel got what he deserved really. However, I do think their full back should have gone too as the ref needed to be consistent over the bookings and to let Bellerin off while punishing our players wasn't very good.

Spurs next and we really need a win to stop the rot!!

!
In fairness our away support are always good, it's the home crowd that are questionable.

Wrong subs at half time. Shaw wasn't having a great game, but putting a struggling Smalling at the left side of defence was bizarre.

Carrick's introduction was great news. Herrera' withdrawal was not. Blind was off the pace for much of the first half.

But no excuses it was a complete collapse. Such a bunch of fannies playing with no purpose at all.

It's the inconsistency. Welbeck did pretty much the same thing and wasn't carded.

The main one was the Bellerin tackle. Was a clear yellow card. Which would have left the game 1-1, 11 vs 10 men at Old Trafford. Game changing decision. Even the ABU commentators made mention of it, and Wenger saw it too by pulling him off pretty much minutes later.
