Post match v Liverpool

This is genuinely one of those games where it actually affects my mood for a day or two. After last year, I thought it couldn't get worse but it did today. We cared, we hoped and we got demolished worse than last year.

I'm genuinely furious but I cannot understand how we didn't tighten at the back at 3-0 o 4-0. What did we think was going to happen?

We need to stop playing Weghorst from the start. We're shoehorning him in to play Bruno and Rashford in 2 positions they're worse in.

It's just stupidity from ETH despite the good job he's done. He has to take the biggest blame for that. He needs to cut it out.

It's annoying to me, but I always feel this game means more to the Liverpool players than the United players and it's felt that way for years and years now. You just can't be losing 7-0 to your biggest rivals as professionals. The effort/pride today was an utter disgrace from every single player.

Playing bad and losing is fine. Playing with no professionalism/effort and getting destroyed 7-0 at Anfield is unacceptable.
Same here. I feel our players for many years have this superiority complex because they play for Manchester United which is bigger than pool and is the biggest club in the country. They get the most attention, they get paid the highest wages and all that. They are never focused on the challenge itself and are ready to die against Liverpool like those scouse bastards are for some reason.

Not based on anything just a feeling.

It was a bit of a freak.
Like when Shaw boots a clearance into their man and it drops perfectly for Salah 2 yards out.

Or the one McTom had 2 deflections on that dropped spark for Salah to lash in again.

Dalot being behind the line totally all at sea probably the absolute peak of ludicrousness.

Yea and then there must have been about six missed tackles for their second goal just after half time. A comedy of errors. Murphys law today.

Anyhow, we need a reaction on thursday.

Wish a lot of you would grow up. The most important is to forget about this and move on. Let this get inside our heads and its season over stuff. There were so many mistakes today that no one could have foreseen. There is no re- managing that second half. Liverpool could have hit the corner post and it would have went in. We are still in massive re-build in Ten hag's image, yeah we got giddy as Keane would say, but reality hit us in one half. Get back on the horse and reset and go again. The most important is a top 4 and Glaziers selling and no matter if we had won 7-0 today, those are the two most important things at the start of this season. We will continue to fight forest fires if we don't get both. I bet you when the dust settles he has learnt more today than in the last 10 games. Do yourselves a favour and ignore tv and radio until kick off on Thursday night and even the Europa League is now a free hit at the reset button.

Think you will find this is in our heads for however long it takes us to give them a hiding either at Old Trafford/Anfield. Only time we did them was 4-0 in 2003 and that took two red cards

So here are my thoughts...

1) Ten Hag should have played AWB. We're in a febrile atmosphere, and we were more than likely going to be up against it - you want your better defender playing. Dalot is good for games we're going to dominate and play on the front foot, AWB is better for where we need to keep it tight. Today, it was a game for AWB (and surprised he wasn't brought on at all).

2) de Gea is just so poor in these big games. The sooner he's replaced the better.

3) Usually EtH gets it spot on, but I don't get why he decided to play Rashford as a CF when one of the shittest defenders in the league is playing RB. It really was an awful decision.

4) Bruno put in a genuine 0/10 performance. I think we need to seriously consider the benefit of replacing him in the starting 11 with someone a lot more composed and calm on the ball. It's telling how much more disciplined Arsenal's attacks are with Odegaard playing there then compared to us.

5) Bleh.

They'd better not post any of their fake social media "apologies" after this. Just don't you dare insult the fans by doing that.

I switched off at 3-0 as it was so bad, and Liverpool looked like they were going to score again, didn't think it would get that embarrassing

ETH made them run after the Brentford embarrassment, they best be fecking running again tomorrow. Run and run and run. It seemed to work after the Brentford game.

If we'd played the best we could and Liverpool were simply better, Id be frustrated as they're one you always want to beat, but the pathetic display today (what I saw of it although given what unfolded I'm guessing it didn't get better) was at least as bad as the worst we saw under Ole. At least. I thought the mentality had changed. Every single player out there today needs to be held accountable.

An absolute priority this summer needs to be signing 2 strikers. The WW experiment needs to only be used against smaller teams. I'm not blaming him, but having to compromise other players just so he can play isn't helping. He isn't good enough that other players should play out of position to accommodate him. I don't want us to sign him permanently, but the almost reliance on him is concerning

I don't watch the youth is there really no one who could come in that's ready to step up? I'm not even asking for a MG level talent, but there must be someone with better finishing?

Of all the games to do that in…

It’s such a shame after last week but I guess we just ran out of legs at the worst possible point.

It hurts but we can’t let one loss derail how well we’ve done this season. Back to the drawing board.

Think everybody as been praising United and ETH to the hilt this week that it might have beeen easy to lose focus. They wouldn't have meant to, but they have been playing with almost a sense of invincibility. They were playing Liverpool today not a Rochdale and have been brought back to earth with a massive bump. Hopefully this will have brought the focus back. It's funny that the other two teams who were on a high this week, Sheffield United and Grimby both lost at the weekend, just not on this spectacular scale. Everything that could go wrong did.

All that matters is what happens next and for the rest of the season. If come the end of May we have won another trophy, comfortably finished 3rd and pool don’t make the top 4, will anyone actually give a feck about this result then? I certainly won’t.

If, however pool go on a run, pip us to 3rd and we don’t win anything else and are left scrambling for top 4 then there will be an issue.

All this talk about what you would have taken at the beginning of the season doesn’t matter now, we are where we are and need to better it (or maintain it) for the remainder of the season for it to push us on for next year.

Up until Liverpool scored, I think Utd were the better team. One lapse in defensive organisation and it all came crashing down rather quickly and surprisingly for most of us.

It seems that our excellent run of results and coming from behind affected our common sense. It's like we thought we are coming back from 3-0.
If it's on ETH on the players is difficult to guess but everything we done on the pitch, leaving luck aside, was to their advantage.

Still can't fecking believe this. 7-0?!? Really!?

Rarely has our club been more embarrassed than this. Utterly fecking shameful.

Laughable how disgraceful that was, they will be crowing about this for decades and rightly so

Sourness thinks the score didn't flatter them. Despite having about 8 shots on target and scoring 7,
Even the most rabid scouser can't think they were hard done by for what they converted.

So 7-2 against Villa not 7-0 against us then? Alright. Did klopp also lost to city 6-3 few months back in the same season? To Brentford 4-0 too? No? Okay. Not same then, is it?
well they got 5 put past them at home just the other day so yes it is

We definitely bought into our own hype. If it was OT against a crap team, we could have done something but this is away against a top team.

We've been battered at pretty much every single big ground in the country in the past 5 years. Just ridiculous.

I actually thought we would lose. But by three or 3-1 or somthing. I just felt we were wrecked tired and anfield is the toughest venue in England.

It is a freak result because two or three of those goals had no business being goals. There was about five or six mixed tackles for their second goal. Hilarious.

Anyhow we need a reaction next thursday and at the weekend.

We beat Barcelona just recently, who were the second in form team in europe after Napoli, so its not all bad. It was just the perfect storm for Liverpool today, given how tired we look and also because we won the Carabao last weekend.

Not just because of today but in general -

De gea (the panic starts with him)
Dalot
Awb
Maguire
Lindelof
Fred
Mctominay
Bruno
Martial
Last chance for Sancho next season

Not gonna happen but this lot needs to feck off.
Half of them are the reason we are 3rd with silverware and knocking out Barcelona
Calma calma

Also for me it felt like there was no shame or pride out there at all. Basic feckin survival instincts should surely have kicked in.

At 3 nil I was thinking, don't embarrass yourselves any more...

It really wasn't a 7-0 game,

Sometimes football happens like this, the simple fact is we hit a wall today against a team that were ruthless.

It's a good wake-up call, just a shame it had to be against the scum.

Why is it nonsense? Fatigue has an enormous impact on the level of a player. We are the only team in the Premier League that has competed in every possible game so far, which is going to have a major impact. Liverpool, on the other hand, went out of the cups and looks to be going out of the Champions League. They have had a much easier ride.

You could see in the game today that some of them could barely run. Also, fatigue doesn't just affect physicality but also mentality, which will explain the enormous amount of poor decision making and sheer sloppiness from every player on the pitch.

I would say Ten Hag needs to give them a rest, but the squad is very limited in depth. This is why anyone legitimately believing we were in the title race were fooling themselves; we just don't have the depth for it. Even our first 11 needs changes, particularly in attack.

Absolutely spot on, which I commented on earlier.
We will see on Thursday and next weekend how much the result has affected some players, and it will be a test of Ten Hag, and his coaches abilities to see if they can get them in the right frame of mind for these upcoming matches. More rotation is almost certain now, so please let's support the likes of Maguire, Lindelof, McTominay, Elanga etc, instead of slagging them of every time they appear.

Same. At some point have some fecking pride. We utterly dominated English football for 20 years yet never came close to embarrassing Liverpool like this during that time. Because they had that pride, no matter how shite they were.

Shocking performance.

I do hope this sparks Ten Hag into some changes. I mean the players were shocking pretty much entirely today, but I do think our lineup was very questionable. There's been a number of games like this recently, where we've then changed the game after making subs.

Nearly every team that plays Liverpool targets Trent at RB as their defensive weakness with overloads, yet we had Bruno playing on the left completely ineffective, it just makes no sense. You've got Weghorst playing as a #10, but he's never going to create anything from there. A lot of the time recently he's almost playing as a midfielder and it just seems ludicrous, I realise work rate, but from a creativity stand point it makes no sense. It feels like we're putting square pegs into round holes to accommodate everyone, and today it was badly exposed.

I was amazed Ten Hag didn't make subs at HT too, there were already signs it wasn't working. For most of the first half it actually looked there for the taking as Liverpool looked vulnerable, but we didn't use our opportunities well. Antony was terrible, I was amazed he lasted 90 minutes, especially as at one point he was looking a good candidate for a red card. By the time we made subs the game was already lost, and the players had completely lost their heads anyway, so the players coming on were coming on to a hiding to nothing anyway.

I do question whether Bruno really is captain material of the club too. The problem is when the going gets tough he's just not a leader to sort out the team. He will spend his time whingeing and getting involved in petty scraps, it's literally the opposite of what you want from a captain when your backs against the wall. You need someone to keep it together out there, but Bruno is a symptom of the problem when it falls apart, not the solution.

Yeah they were very clinical. Of course its down to shoddy defending too, but god damn they didnt give us a chance. Very bad day, just fecked up it had to be against pool.

Our biggest defeat under Sir Alex was a 6-1 loss against City if I recall correctly. This is just another level. Hopefully not a sign of things to come. Hard to blame a single player when the whole team were horrendous for that second half

Fair play Liverpool have been consistent winners of the big game cup in recent years. I really hope their fans have a great time enjoying the open top bus on Monday while the rest of the country is working to pay their benefits.

Get them lights on at Carrington

Yup, funny how people were claiming Maguire was our issue, yet we concede 7 like that today without him. Defensively poor.

But the scoreline flattered Liverpool massively, they didn't have any amazing chances other than what they scored.
Amazing really.

I'm surprised very few mention this, we also could of scored 1-2 from the chances created.

We were always going to come under pressure against Liverpool at Anfield. And the way we've been playing of late meant Fred was always going to be favoured over Sabitzer. The only thing he could've done differently was to play a midfield three of Sabitzer, Fred and Casemiro. But like I've said, the aim isn't to build the play through thirds due to the clear weaknesses we have in the team.

We could've had a 3 man midfield and we'd still be ceding possesion due to some of the weaknesses in our players. And it doesn't really matter who plays or how the team is setup imo, because you can't make the mistakes Fred and Shaw made, which gifted Liverpool a two goal lead.
It was never going to be easy but I don’t think it was a hopeless case to try and stop them getting the ball through the midfield. Hasn’t everyone been saying all year that their midfield is poor? I would have played 3 in MF and remind them that their MF ain’t all that.

It is one thing to bypass our MF when we are trying to progress the ball (not sure if I agree we should be doing that either) but we needed Sabitzer in the MF to help us get it back off them and then pass it to one of ours. You can’t just pretend the MF doesn’t exist as the oppos will just walk all over you. We made it easy for them by not making it hard for them.

So 3 in MF was the way to go. It’s possible the outcome could have been worse but that sounds ridiculous in the circumstances. Liverpool have lost a lot of games this season, including one at home. We’ve been decent. It should have been possible to set up to give us a better chance of winning. I’d go as far as to say we should have beaten them.

The mistakes and the crumbling resolve are what stick out but they are symptoms of the tactics in my opinion. We let Liverpool have the ball and they loved it.

Long time lurker, fresh signup here. Been watching since '78, and never felt the need to join forums before tonight. The reason for joining now is something I've been thinking for a good while now. When I saw someone posting almost my exact thoughts on the BBC HYS, I figured there might be more of us thinking the same. So here goes.

I think we can all agree that, skilled as he may be, Bruno Fernandes' behaviour is not exactly what one would want to leap to mind when the phrase "Manchester United captain" is voiced. He pretty much showed everything we don't want in a captain tonight.

So my question is: Why exactly is it that Rashford isn't our captain? He's universally admired as a player and a person, always gives his best, never lets his side down and leads immaculately by example. I hesitate to say this, but is it because he's black??? I honestly cannot fathom it.

I know some people say he goes missing, but name me an attacker who is highly visible for the right reasons (biting your opponent or pretending to have had your head chopped off when someone breathes near your leg are not right reasons, btw) when service is non-existent.

I just don't get it.

And also, would we still be as tolerant of Bruno's shortcomings if his background was different? Say he grew up a troubled council estate kid, and had a couple of scrapes with the law on his back. Would we be as patient with his behaviour? Would he even be in the team? I mean, MG is seemingly out on grounds of behaviour and unwanted drama. I am of course not going to equate MG's situation with BF, but I don't think it's too much to ask for a certain minimum standard for a Man Utd captain, off and on the field.

If nothing else, he's a red card waiting to happen. And with our luck, it would happen at the worst possible time.

But what's even worse, he doesn't drag us up by the scruff of the neck when we're down; he makes it worse. And that's not what we should be looking for in a captain.

I’d run them into the ground this week. Tell them to forget about the EL, the reserves will play in that competition from now on because these lot don’t deserve it get anywhere near the final, the league is the sole focus.
