Manchester United 1:2 Swansea City

Post-match discussion

Sat, 16 August 2014

Rooney was the only regular international in that team today. Serious lack of talent at Manchester United nowadays. Will be another struggle of a season.

over-reaction galore....first game of the season ffs. The more i browse through the posts the more i believe that this forum has been taken over by 10 yr olds

My feelings exactly. I feel like my weekend is ruined now.

I feel like the enitre season is ruined !

We have learned absolutley nothing, we are playing exactly like we were under Moyes and in terms of signings we have done absolutley nothing aswell. Ungrounded optimism and confidence about the team during preseason and then when it finally matters we look even worse than under Moyes. I almost have to puke at the idea of watching this United struggle to get points at OT against teams like swansea for an entire season.

Great job Woodward ! Watch this space, asshole...

Highly optimistic to say touch and go. We need to improve significantly before it's touch and go IMO. All the other teams have improved and come off the back of good seasons. The best way to forget about last year was to storm to a win today. Mentally more than anything, this performance and result is highly damaging.

It is damaging because we still look a pretty ordinary side, I am sure teams would choose to play us rather than city, Chelsea's, arsenal or liverpool but I expect us to add to the squad and that will improve our chances of finishing fourth but I wouldn't bet on it.

Thought Jones was probably our best player out there today. Herrera going off made a big difference too and that shows you the good work he does in the middle of the park. Just a shame Fletcher had a stinker next to him. See also Mata, Hernandez...

Its feels like shit. I dont want to watch any more football this weekend

Yep, it's one of the reasons I hate us playing early on the weekend. If we lose it ruins the rest of the weekend and I watch nothing else

Vent frustrations here

Took the words right out of my mouth, Randall. I don't want to watch football, I don't want to do anything I'm supposed to do this weekend, I don't want to do anything but sit around getting arseholed and feeling sorry for myself.

Miniscule ray of sun is van Gaal looked and sounded as angry and despondent as I feel in the post-game interview.

For those criticising Mata:

I think the concept of a no.10 has become so confused in recent years.

Look at Ozil - tore teams apart at real because he had runners. But look at him at arsenal where he lacks runners - had a poor season.

Look at Mata. In a counter attacking Chelsea side, he scored and assisted. But at United, no runners, and is useless.

You'll find similar stories for all number 10s. 10s need runners to stretch the game. We have NONE who do that.

Very true. Di Maria and januzaj either side of a forward would give mata options.

Even with signings, there is much to change in the players minds as well as quality on the field.

So many spoilt fans it's ridiculous.

Man City started terribly last season, they didn't end up doing too badly

The ghosts of last season re-appeared, and it is going to take longer than we hoped to banish them! But that is only to be expected.

Interesting subs today, and none of Hernandez, Nani or Fellaini did themselves any favors.

I mentioned it in the match day thread, but the tactics seems very unlike LVG today once the result looked in doubt. Giggs hasn't really proved anything to be the assistant manager so i really hope his advise is only taken in consideration and nothing more.

Someone needs to make a compliation of Nani's performance in the second half because I've seen plenty of people say this now but I'm quite sure along with Januzaj he was our best player on the pitch (and it surprised me ). Have I completely lost my marbles?

They have from last season and still haven't spent enough. Hopefully LvG will grab Ed round the throat and tell him to Spend Ed, Spend.
Ed's a fecking buffoon but LvG is also a bit insane, making the same mistakes his predecessor made, analysing players in mid August. We started the season with a squad which is arguably weaker than the one we had last season. His comments yesterday at the presser also suggested that he's been the one holding up transfers just so he can see how his current crop do. Well, if that performance hasn't taught you anything Louis, then I don't know what will.

Then sign them for crying out load, sign Cuadrado or Di Maria, hell why the feck weren't we even in for Sanchez, all runners, but no lets go for a renaissenace of Young and Nani...

Spoilt? You're right, we should accept 7th place because seventh is the new second, and then we should be happy about a performance such as this. If I had any faith in Woodward it'd be easier to take.

Januzaj wasnt all that. He can dribble and go past players, but his decision making is terrible. Far too egoistic at the moment, ruined so many chances.

Nonsense. We created nothing, but to create you need something to build off. A solid midfield, a reliable defense. We have neither. How often did our attacking players pick up the ball in threatening places to cause damage? Hardly ever. That's because they've got nothing to build off.

Is it the job of the defence to get the attacking players in good positions then?

We had 65% possession. If we have nothing to build from then it's the fault of the attackers for not finding space and taking up positions where they can receive the ball and do something with it.

Man City also have a much much better squad than what we have and will have even if we brought in 2/3 players.

Also, how do you expect people to act? All the hype in pre-season has quickly vanished after one home performance that was quite simply pathetic.

LVG called it-said that it took time at Bayern for the players to implement the system. Only thing stopping me from jumping out the window.

Most bothered by Mata breaking out the invisibility cloak. So much of our best play pre-season went through him. On TV I couldn't see the problem-maybe a match-going fan can help-was Mata not free or what?

Back three looks shaky-Jones was nervous on his own without a wingback helping on his right. Leaves a lot of room for Smalling to cover w/o CM dropping back for support.

First game-Blackett looked comfortable. Had workmen at the house-so missed second half. Maybe Fellani sub was LVG rolling the dice? As Scholes said-he's mad-we'll have to get used to some head-scratchers.

On to next week.

Gah. Nothing to add about the game that hasn't already been said apart from people criticising Nani today are fecking insane.

We will remain outside the top 4 if we don't make any signings, LVG or no LVG.

Even with signings, there is much to change in the players minds as well as quality on the field.

I agree it will take time and maybe even longer than this season, who we do or don't sign between now and the end of the window will have a massive impact on whether we get straight back in the champions league or if we don't play in it for a few seasons.

What did Nani do that was so much worse than the other players we had? Took a lot more responsibility to try and do something with the ball than others imo.

Nani did nothing except for the one drive up the middle of the pitch. But I'm not blaming this all on Nani. He came on late and was just one of many problems. Watch the match winner replay again and focus your eyes on Nani -- you will not be happy.

On the first goal, we had no midfield help defensively. Ki was wide open at the top of the box for the slotted goal. On the second goal Blackett invited the quick free kick, the Fellaini and Nani were caught ball watching.

It's been fukking years and years since Keane left us and we've never dealt with the most glaring need on the pitch. We cannot go another season like this. I love Darren Fletcher but he's simply not our answer.

Tbf how much of that possession was in our defensive third. Pretty confident passes from smalling to x are probably amongst the highest number of passes today which isn't a great sign given he's probably the worst outfield player for passing we have.

I´m not too fond of the 3-5-2. I think LvG is wasting his time with this system. It can't create too many chances.

Nevertheless Man utd shouldn't have lost this match. Swansea barely came into Man Utd's half. In terms of effectivity they'll rarely have a better match than this. The result is harsh on LvG and Man Utd, but there's clearly a lot of work to be done. Having all the possession doesn't mean much if you don't create anything.

With LvG things will get better without any doubt. I do think he should be focussing on 4-3-3 rather then 3-5-2 though.

Can talk all day about Herrera being taken off being the killer but he wasn't exactly amazing was he?

Start to see exactly what Mourinho was doing when he got rid of Mata. Doesn't actually offer much if things aren't absolutely perfect.

Rooney with his typical performance. Scored but was abysmal and his passing as ever, completely terrible.

Fletcher should be nowhere near the first team but apparently because he was semi-decent in pre-season he's back and we're great in midfield.

Hoofing it up to Fellaini when he came on under someone who supposedly plays excellent, modern football is one of the most shocking things I've seen at the club. What a load of shit.

Hopefully the 'squad is fine, we're getting top four or challenging for the title, LVG is a god, we're amazing because we played a few one touch passes ' brigade will feck off and people like me who were negative about the squad because it's the truth will be seen as rational and sensible.

We need to spend big otherwise we're fecked and we're not going to spend big so we're fecked.

Difference being they spent over £100m on the squad that already consisted of Yaya, Kompany, Silva, Aguero, Nasri etc...completely different situation to ours.

Let's get Carrick, Rafael, Evans, Welbeck and Shaw back. Sign the players we've obviously been working on and go from there. Not sure why we've allowed ourselves to be in this position though. We all knew we needed signings, plus Manchester United and an injury list longer than your arm are about as synonymous as can be. No-one to blame but ourselves really.

I would be hopeful as time goes on Van Gaal will continue to improve this squad even if it is gradual. We NEED Vidal and Di Maria/Cuadrado. No two ways about it.

True but we are missing at least 3 starters including a 25 goal a season striker.

I'm not suggesting were going to win, but rather there's a long way to go and 37 more opportunities to claim points.
Losing the first game isn't ideal however it's not the end of the season like some peoples' reaction is suggesting

Looking at how we've spent money over the last 4 years, and comparing it with how much we've laughed at city's spending, They have bought extremely fecking well when it comes to their spine players... the cnuts.
