Well, everyone seems to has a different vision when it comes to 'Pop-Punk' and a lot of different bands seem to have a phase of songs that fit it when maybe a lot of their other stuff doesn't. Brand New are a good example IMO as their first album fit it rather well, but none of their later stuff was anywhere close.Descendents were the pioneers of that particular sub genre imo, and they were about 20 years earlier.
Been listening to punk for about 25 years, but I've never really gotten into so-called "pop-punk". All a bit too cheesy and soft for me. Unless you call jawbreaker, older alkaline trio and jimmy eat world pop-punk, which I wouldn't but I've seen them mentioned in other replies.
Going to see Jawbreaker next week, finally!
My first thoughts when it comes to Pop-Punk are still the likes of blink-182, New Found Glory etc as that's when I first got into it and they were the top bands at the time. I think they are more what I class as 'Pop-Punk' as it is a softer, often classed as more 'whiney-voiced' kind of Punk music. I think you are speaking more of the slightly hardcore punk kind of music, which makes me think of bands more like The Clash and The Ramones etc as the more major bands. Of course, the evolution of music is vast and there will have been bands before Blink and NFG that pushed that sound and influenced them, but I feel like these guys took it to the next level and have influenced what have been my favourite bands throughout the 2000's so far.
