It's not that different, really, but I really wanted a more free-flowing attack with young Laudrup (who wasn't yet a proper number 10 but rather a free-roaming creative forward) & Rensenbrink both sometimes dropping deeper & Elkjær, obviously, peeling out wide to free the space for their central runs.
I also generally prefer a 4-3-3 to a diamond and in this case Pirlo should be very much in his element even though he's pretty much synonymous with diamonds of all shapes & sizes.
True for young Laudrup, but I'd rather put dream team Laudrup in the #10 and him exploiting Rensenbrink and Elkjaer movement and give him center stage. Lahm is also a pretty good choice for balanced RB in a diamond(sorts of Thuram role), whilst Zebec can be the more attacking option.
In a 4-3-3 I'd expect a bit more in attack from either Lerby or Kante and neither is ideal for AM role. In a diamond I'd give that stage to Laudrup, whilst Pirlo dictates from deep and both Lerby and Kante are given defensive B2B roles. Laudrup also preferred the left channel so whilst it is not much different personal opinion I'd start him in a diamond given the personnel.
In an isolated game diamond or 4-3-3 might be better in terms of standalone formation, but in the current game they made the right choice. If you remove Hamrin from the picture this gives Breitner more freedom and plays in your hands since Cambiasso can have support in the middle, whilst Stoichkov can track Lahm off the ball. They don't have Pirlo on the pitch though here...
