I'm looking at it this way. Is Ole going to be good enough to compete at the top level where we want to be? So far we've had joy by being a counter attacking team, but this is getting figured out in the big games (even though we've held on for wins vs Spurs & Arsenal), but we still have the same problem breaking down well organised teams.

Unless he does really well against Chelsea x2, City and Liverpool, whilst dropping few points in the other games, then we really need to consider this. Because those that are saying 'just give it to Ole' need to consider what happens a year or two down the line if he's coming up short? We'd have to go through a very tough period of actively letting go of a club legend who is the manager. If there are question marks and other, proven options this summer, I think it would be wise to really consider these possibilities.
I agree those games are important. It is fine blowing the lesser teams away, but somewhere along the line you have to be capable of dealing with the really big teams, because otherwise we will not be going anywhere. Now it is up to Ole to prove he can deal with these teams tactically, be able to change things if required. If he can then he is putting himself to the head of the queue. If not then we really need to be looking for someone who can. Also still want that DOF.

Whatever we do, its a risk. There are no sure things. So if we had to make the decision now for whatever reason, for me its still Ole.

But of course the best thing to do is wait till the end of the season and see where we are.

If he comes up with something in those games, then he's the man as far as I'm concerned. However, he's got us playing a counter attacking style similar to Leicester a few years ago, which can snatch games against unsuspecting opponents. I'd also like us to actually control a game against one of these teams. Is this team not capable of controlling a game against Arsenal? Especially in their current form. I need to see more from us to be convinced.

Ironically, the 2nd half against Spurs with the way they altered then pinned us in our penalty box for practically the whole half has got me thinking that maybe Poch is the better choice. Even though we got the win. It also proved to me that Poch can come up with ways to break down a packed defence like we had (they were unlucky not to score on a few occasions), which again is something we've not really seen from Ole other than crossing the ball.

And that is why we should wait until the end of the season. So many things can still happen. There is no urgency.

I'll be watching the Spurs game with extra interest to see how Poch sets up the team and copes throughout it. I remember how naive they've been in the CL in the past under him, not too dissimilar to Ole last night.

Still not sure who I'd want.

I want to see how Ole does in our next few big games.

Today wasn't good. It was a really poor showing. Let's see how he responds.
Assuming Martial and Lingard are put, do you really expect us to be able to do anything in those games while resembling the team that Ole wants us to be? My expectations for those games are zero and I’m not going to judge him for them, since the backups are completely unable to play football (the way Ole wants to play).

I do expect Ole to be able to come up with some kind of plan to get through the upcoming games making use of the resources at his disposal. Obviously when we have all our players available our XI picks itself and most of us are very happy with the way we have played with those players. But if Lingard and Martial are out we need to come up with a new plan. I understand why we were unable to switch to that at half time during a game we had been psyching ourselves up for for weeks. But now we have time to prepare and we - sorry, he - needs to come up with something.

This doesnt all hinge on us beating Liverpool. Obviously that would be great. And losing will hurt like hell. But its about maintaining our composure and racking up more points between now and the end of the season than Chelsea and Arsenal, even if we have a couple of important players out. Its about showing he's adaptable and unwilling to give up.

Which I sincerely believe he will prove himself to be.

He has already proven to me that he is worth the risk of getting the job for our next two seasons. There is just so much we get out of it if he does well. A true red that no matter how well he does will never leave for another club. Ever. Unlike Poch. Unlike Zidane. Unlike everyone else worth mentioning as our next manager.

There is to much to gain and to little to lose by not giving him a real shot.

Glaston has no idea what chubby cheeks want.

I know what he's said, several times over, about wanting to build a dynasty at Spurs, about wanting to stay for many years into the future, about not leaving unless he's sacked. And I know the actions he's taken … like signing a new, long-term contract without waiting even just the few days it would have taken to see if RM would lose the CL final and thus whether Zidane would get the boot as a result.

But some United fans ignore all this - and more - in favour of what really amounts to clutching at straws. It's as obvious as the nose on your face that Pochettino will be at Spurs next season regardless of whatever United may or may not want.

I see your out of hiding again, wonder why that is. If United wanted Poch we would likely get him. Levy isn't going to invest a lot with the stadium being so overdue, Poch will eventually have to move on to win things. Whatever bs you might say, Spurs need investment to win trophies and to get to the next level (as do United). Levy will milk as much as he can from Real or United in the summer for Poch, bottom line is Daddyo if they want him, they will get him. I want Ole to get it, he gets our club and think it's a better fit. No guarantees with Poch winning stuff and that's ultimately what it comes down to.

Have always wondered whether Pochettino actually would want to come here. I would have thought that even if it was the case and that he did want to come which I doubt is the case, I don't think that he would come out and publicly say it anyway due to professionalism.

Thank you for the insight you gave in the first paragraph as I had never heard this before and this makes me think even more he wants to stay with you. I had conversation with my mate about the situation and came to the conclusion that I think he wants to stay at Spurs as he thinks they are on the verge of something special.

It might frustrate him if he left in the summer and the next guy gets Spurs winning trophies (if you don't win anything this year) after putting in the work to build the team over the last 5 seasons.

Nearly there!

I only popped in out of curiosity to see if people had jumped ship after last night … but I was pleasantly surprised to see he's gained some voters and is now almost neck-and-neck with Poch

Not a bit surprised most of us fans are hopeless romantics, Ole working out would like 1999 all over again or the stuff of fantasy football, it's the same reason why Tony Adams/Vieira/Bergkamp would poll high for Arsenal manager.

Probably time for a new poll.

Get rid of everybody on there except Poch and Ole.

We need intellectual honesty here and remove romanticism. Ole has done well, but he has not managed at this top end of the premier league for that long and it remains to be seen whether he can sustain his excellent record so far. If he was not a United player with "that goal" in 1999, I do not think we would be all over him as much as we are at the moment, and would just treat him as any other manager who is currently going through a good spell. But you are allowed a legacy, so we will let him have that.

Poch on the other hand, has consistently done well, not only in his style of play, but also his ability to cope under difficult circumstances (financially, as well as injuries). Playing without Kane is a big issue for them, make no mistake, but they are always there or thereabouts at the end of the season. The chink in his armour however is he has yet to win anything - but lest we forget, so is Ole.

So if we are intellectually honest, we have two managers, both of whom have not won anything substantial, one has had a good track record in the premier league, the other is having a good spell, but not clear how he will do in the long term, I think the choice is pretty clear.

What makes it slightly more complicated is the role of the backroom staff. I think this is key, and in this regard, Ole has the upper hand in my view.

Still a close call between the two, I would see how Ole does at the end of the season, as by then it will be pretty clear who is the better choice.

I believe there is still a good shout in there for Tuchel and Marco Rose over Ole. It is crazy also to rule out Zidane who has won three champions league title in a row as well.

After looking at things from a holistic perspective, even though Ole has done a fantastic job so far, I would be surprised if we overlooked these managers for him. Still a long way to go and even though his result so far has been fantastic, I am not convinced that he is the right man yet.

I voted for Poch.

But just curious, what is Zidane up to these days? Anyone know the real reason why he left Real Madrid like right after they win their 3rd CL consecutive tropies?

Zidane Zidane Zidane....

Don't be fooled by his CL wins, he's not the Messiah. He was under pressure from Madrid for his league form and saved from the sack each season by the CL win (thanks to Ronaldo).

It has to be either Ole or Poch.

Marco Rose is still my first choice, and I won't be changing that until the end of this current season.

I'm still Zidane. If Ole gets us top 4 by end of the season I will not be unhappy at all to see him given the permanent job. I hope if it is the case he will not be Mr nice guy, I want him ruthless, cutting down the dead wood and demanding big money for the signings we so desperately need.

To everyone who has voted for Poch, if he doesn't want to come to United who would be your 2nd choice?

Good question because everyone here just presumes that Poch would join us without hesitation.Lets not forget he's got a good thing going on at Spurs.

Anyhoo,my second option would be Ole.I would be intrigued to see how he would implement his vision for United longterm, especially if he will continue to progress with the high intensity pressing he's got the team playing.Would Ole focus more on youth ? and if so I think United fans would have to accept that there will be a fair few bumpy results along the way.

At the moment Ole.

But that could change in the next month or so. Ole could be my first choice if he gets the team to beat Chelsea or Liverpool. He could also move down the pecking order if we lose those two games playing like we did in the second half in Tuesday.

Poch or Ole for me, neither is a bad choice.

I think Tottenham/Levy will make it very hard and costly to get Poch. They will drag it right out until the start of next season and leave us with little time for signings and the whole needs time to access the squad meaning another transfer window at least of ‘deadwood’.

I'd say after that second half turnaround by Spurs, Poch has leapt to the forefront

Yeah, I know. He asked who was my second choice and at this time it’s Ole. But in six weeks time after we played all our tough fixtures, we’d get a better feeling where we at with Ole.

Being honest, if Poch is moving RM will be top of his list not us. Also makes it an easier exit from Spurs, not having to face their fans at least twice a year for a rival PL team.

He's in an excellent position, it's incredible to think how high his stock is and he's not won anything, literally ever.

Well, nothing can be said with certainty..

The one thing that may stop him going to RM at this time is length of contract. He’ll still have 4 years left on his Spurs contract this summer and he’s unlikely to get that from RM I’d have thought. He is in a great position though.

Ole. Though I do think he's still a massive risk despite how good these past few weeks have felt, and arguably our last three permanent managers also came to us with a certain level of risk...

Poch is the safety option surely. Whilst being criticised for not winning much at Spurs, he has as at least proven that he can get a team to compete at the top of the PL for consecutive seasons, more than can be said for any of our previous appointments post SAF.

I think he'd be off his rocker to go to Real.

Yes they've an incredible history but there's no way he'd last more than 2 season's and that's being generous. He's the kind of manager that needs time and will build up a team, he's done it twice now with Southampton and Spurs.

United would be the ideal fit for him really or sticking put.

 He got Madrid more points than Barca the first half season after Benitez was sacked. He WON La Liga in the 2nd season. It's only the 3rd season the league form suffered, and by that time he already won 2 CLs.

Zidane > Ole > Poch

Is ZZ even in the contention anymore?

I think its pretty much a 2 horse race between Ole and Poch.

We are like Madrid though. Not Southampton and Spurs. The expectation is to win. With the resources available here he should build a team AND be expected to win. Not just build without any prrssure and going out of cups with whimper .

We're not like Madrid in sacking managers, that's the point I am referring to. We do our upmost to afford managers time to role a plan out, if its abundantly clear that the plan isn't working of course we will pull the plug.

I'm all for Poch getting the job, I've no issue and believe with more financial backing and time with a solid backroom (scouting etc) he would win us leagues.

I agree we like to think of ourselves this way, I agree management believe in the idea of giving managers time, but our record post SAF tells a different story. The problem is, "abundantly clear the plan isnt working" is a very subjective concept, there are no indicators to quantify this against. There may be a difference in when Woodward regards something as "abundantly clear" versus when Real presidents think it, but this difference can probably be measured in weeks or maybe months.

We talk the talk when it comes to giving managers time and space, but we havent backed that up at this point - and most fans would say rightfully so. Having said that, backing managers when theyre winning and have the fans onside is easy, and most clubs do that. OK, some fans will say former managers have failed because of style as much as results, but then Madrid might well sayu the same thing.

Poch will look at us and I suspect he'll conclude that if he does not have us competing for the CL qualification spots he is going to be under considerable pressure. No doubt managing Madrid invites more pressure, but if we think we are morally superior to Madrid in the way we handle our managers we are really kidding ourselves.
