Gaming PlayStation 5

I wouldn't say the future looks bleak, but there's a radio silence from several studios that I would've expected an update from at this point. Naughty Dog (other than TLOU multiplayer), Bend Studio, Media Molecule, Sucker Punch, Team Asobi, Bluepoint Games, Housemarque, those are the main ones.

We can make an educated guess about Sucker Punch (Ghost of Tsushima sequel) and maybe Asobi (another Astro game), but the other studios? The fact that we don't know anything about their projects probably means we are looking at late 2024 releases at the earliest.

A few people seem to think Sony will do a second show this year as a few studios they know have stuff to show showed nothing. Apparently this is what Sony did the year the ps5 launched too, which they called phase 1, and apparently this is now phase 2. Who knows, I have loads of stuff to play so not too worried really.

Have you played their past releases before moving to the furure ones? Already in this console generation we have these exclusives
- GoW Rangnarok
- Ratchet
- Demon Souls
- Spiderman
- Returnal
- Astros playroom
- Horizon FW

Obviously there are many non exclusives. Granted it’s not PS4 2nd half generation levels but as usual Playstation is having the strongest line up so far.

Gran Turismo 7 as well which is by far my most played game of the lot.

It's interesting because I thought there were going to be some big announcements at the last event just because of the number of Sony studios that have done nothing for PS5. Bend Studio is an interesting one as its been basically complete silence since Days Gone and that was over 4 years ago. Naughty Dog we're looking at 2026 I reckon Last of Us multiplayer aside. There's got to be a pretty strong likelihood that 2024 will get a good few releases from the other studios.

Anyone playing the FF XVI demo? I'm trying hard to be optimistic but i'm not sure i like the look of the battle system from trailers. Will play the demo later and see.

The setting and story look interesting though.

I've played about the first 45 minutes of the demo so far, it's almost all cutscenes with some minor and extremely limited gameplay. Not exactly the way to make a good first impression. I'm now in some sort of castle where I hopefully get some freedom at last.

Unfortunately framerate is all over the place in that location. I've chosen Framerate mode over Quality (no brainer), and it's nowhere near 60 at this point. Curious to see the DF analysis, but I wouldn't be surprised to see drops to around 30. Square-Enix claimed this game is so stable it doesn't require a day-one patch, so either that means this is an earlier, rougher build, or they're full of shit. I'll leave you guys to decide which is more likely.

I'm going to play on a bit and see if it finally opens up a little more.

Edit: I also downright despise the motion clarity in this castle area. It's an awful, blurry mess with no option to turn it off. It's so bad it could actually make my head hurt after a while, I think, which isn't something that usually happens to me.

I finished the "base" part of the demo, which I assume is the same as the start of the full game (since it creates a clear data save which you can use in the full game). This unlocks another part deeper into the game with more combat options, but I don't think I'll try this as I never enjoy being dropped into a developed character without the learning experience along the way.

Even the first part of the demo is pretty substantial. Granted, it's extremely story heavy with only a few moments of freedom, but I guess that is typical of early game JRPGs. What is also typical about that, is that the combat is far too simplistic and easy. It seems like style over substance, which is not exactly unexpected. But the good thing is, it is actually fun. Against basic mobs button mashing seems the way to go but the bigger fights are pretty cool. Still easy though, we'll see if the final game ups the challenge.

Performance remained an issue throughout, though less so in the combat-heavy sections. It is clearly not where it needs to be in this demo and if the game launches in this state, I would advise anyone to hold off on buying it. Motion blur is really bad in framerate mode and I tried quality mode for shits and giggles, it's quite possibly the worst blur I've ever seen. Feels like you're drunk as feck.

All in all, I came away from it feeling it shows decent promise, but needs some work. Unless reviews are terrible, I'm getting this at some point.

I didn't realise that Final Fantasy XVI has an MGS filter.

I never thought any console would surpass the PS2 for me in terms of the memories I had playing it with mates (saving games to our memory cards and then taking it over to play during sleepovers etc) but the PS5 is up there currently. After a couple of years of enjoying games but feeling like I was having to grind a lot, I’m at a point where I’m playing and enjoying so many games on the system and doing so while hitting the platinum trophy on them too. Love it so much.

Even my jaded soul was quite impressed by the FFXVI demo. It is very story/cutscene heavy but it does look a very interesting story and the stakes seem very high.

Nice looking game too (the frames do seem to tank in a certain section) and although I think it was just me being not very good, some of the combat on the bosses was a bit spongy.

Still, better than expected. looking forward to this now.

I just finished it and really enjoyed it. But I am quite a big souls fan so I have no issues with a more action orientated combat system.

There are definitely frame rate issues and for the first time ever I stuck a game on quality mode and it actually seemed a lot better than performance, mainly because overall it looked better and the frame rate drops aren't as significant.

I'm a big final fantasy fan but had no hype before playing this demo having avoided pretty much all promotional stuff. Going to get this day one for sure now

What have been your top 5?

The reviewers seem to be loving the demo. The developers are very clear about the inspiration for this which is GoW and GOT funnily enough. So it was never going to be old school traditional FF or anything like that. Which I’m fine by tbh - proper turn based combat is a chore although the hybrid in FF7 remake was pretty good

That's awesome

Pleasantly surprised how good Hogwarts Legacy is. Gran Turismo 7 i sunk so many hours into and have platinumed it. Ratchet and Clank is class, the new Star Wars: Jedi Survivor also very good as is Elden Ring.

A lot of games I've been playing are actually PS5 updates but they look and play so well on the system - The Witcher, Spider-Man etc.

Finally finished The Last of Us 2. Found it a slog in the end - I didn't enjoy the second half of the game at all (without posting spoilers you should know why if you've played it). But the first half makes it one of my favourite games still.

Now on a bit of a lull until Starfield comes out...so will be on the PC playing Warhammer 3.

I agree on TLOU 2 to an extent. I really think if they had made the final 1/4 of the game a DLC to be released 1 year later no one would have complained

Anyways no lull for me. I will be playing TOTK for the foreseeable future. It is truely one of the all time greatest ever video games

It’s an awesome console and the only one recently I can remember actively buying AAA games on over my PC, not just the Sony exclusives. The dual sense and 3d sound are just so much fun.

Not a massive fan of Zelda - the open world feels so bare to me and dead - especially with minimial interaction with NPCs (compared to something like Skyrim). I did play the first one on the Switch - and I understand why people love it - but I couldn't get far as I say it wasn't for me.

Heard good things about Hogwarts Legacy, need to give it a go, only got the PS5 a few months ago and novelty wore off pretty quickly so need to rekindle that fire for it.

Just bought and setup my PS5 - do people recommend Plus Premium (£8.34 a month/£100 a year) or Extra (£7 a month/£84 a year)? Or do I also need Essential (£50 a year) to use either?

Each higher tier automatically includes the lower one(s). Personally I'm perfectly fine with just Essential but if you don't already have a huge library, Extra is probably the best value. Premium is not worth it.

Extra is great, but premium is only if you want old games to play from ps1 and 2

Extra is worth it. They have subscriptions on sale occasionally but think one happened a month or two ago, so probably a while before the next one.
Essential is basically network access - you can play multiplayer stuff online with friends. You dont need it to play single player games you own. Extra adds a good library of games, netflix esque.
Premium has some extra demo's and some older ps1 games. Sometimes newer games too. Unless theres something specific on it you want to try i'd stick with extra. Theres a list of what games are on premium vs extra floating about somewhere.

Thank you @Ainu, @Schmiznurf, and @caid! So if I get extra, that includes essential? So it's only £84 a year for online access + loads of games? That's incredible value!
Yup, includes Essential. Make sure to add monthly Essential games to your library as you get to keep them indefinitely (as long as you keep at least the base tier sub). The Extra games aren't guaranteed to stay on the service forever.

Premium when it’s on offer (I think it still is?) is still probably worth it. Just buy the yearly one, not the monthly one.

Are there any games for it yet? Had it since February and playing the PS4 version of RDR2 on it

Also is there any way to play RDR 1 on the PS5?

Loads of games. Google it.

If you get one of the premium PS+ subscription there's tons to play and a bunch of free trials for the newer games

I think you can play it through Playstation's cloud streaming thing. Might be called PS Now? I'm not sure if the name has changed along with the new PS+ tiers

https://blog.playstation.com/2023/0...me-streaming-news-update-for-premium-members/

First off, we have very exciting news for PlayStation Plus Premium members. We're currently testing cloud streaming for supported PS5 games – this includes PS5 titles from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Game Trials, as well as supported digital PS5 titles that players own. When this feature launches, cloud game streaming for supported PS5 titles will be available for use directly on your PS5 console. That means as a Premium member, it'll be easier to jump into your favorite games without downloading them first onto your PS5 console. Our goal is to add this as an additional benefit to PlayStation Plus Premium as part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the value of PlayStation Plus.

What’s the benefit? Downloading doesn’t take long these days but I can see there being a lag when steaming so is it worth it?

For travelling maybe? Playing in a different room? Its probably good for future development more than something you can use right now. Maybe a few fringe cases.

It only streams to the PS5 itself, according to that description. Which is completely pointless.

It literally seems to be just to avoid the hassle of downloading. Only real use I can think of is trying a game you're not sure you'll like.

Edit: Suppose it could be proof of concept and a test of the system.

Or if your storage is pretty much full and you don't want to delete another game you're currently playing.
