Gaming PlayStation 5

I’ve got some time of work coming up shortly so just ended up paying an extortionate price for this from CEX ( only willing to do due to part exchanging old consoles and games) to help kill the time.

Can anyone recommend some hidden gem games?. I skipped the PS4 generation so even ones from that generation would be great.

I've bolded the ones that are "free" once you have subscribed to PSN Plus, All top class games massive treat if you haven't seen/played any of them before.

Personally i'd go for Last of Us, Bloodborne and God of War everything after them is a drop in class single player wise anyway :)

Isn’t Horizon free? Or is it no longer free?

I will recommend Nioh 1&2, Dark Souls 1-3, Demons Souls Remake, Bloodborne, Sekiro, God of War, The Witcher 3, Hollow Knight, Shovel Knight, Bloodstained ritual of the night, Darkest Dungeon, Persona 5, Nier Automata, Dragon Quest 11, YS 8, FF7 remake, Ni no kuni 1&2 & Ghost of Tsushima.

What's the next game people are looking forward to? There's not really a lot of upcoming games that are jumping out at me for the rest of the year if i'm honest.

I quite fancy the Ace Attorney release but that's for PS4.

Cheers, I got spiderman with it, Witcher 3 is one I quite fancy as it look a bit like Skyrim. I’m pretty unskilled at video games so the demon souls and blood borne series a probably beyond my level. Dragon quest 11 and the hollow shovel knight looks good too and fairly forgiving.

The Witcher 3 goes on sale every other month to about £5 so don’t pay anymore than that for it. It’s also on PS Now if you’re that way inclined.

Dark souls etc are more about being stubborn than good. They're not mechanically difficult games to play, they're just sneaky mostly.
If your walking along an edge with a long fall to your death theres definitely an enemy around who's going to try boot you off. If theres a corner, theres an enemy hiding behind it. If theres a weak enemy standing in a clearing, seemingly on his own, he's got 5 mates nearby who are going to sneak up behind you.
They get you the first time which is frustrating, 2nd time you know to expect them and they're easy enough to deal with.
Try bloodbourne, if you can get past the 2nd boss you can beat the game. He's probably the hardest boss.

Hollow and Shovel Knight are far from forgiving.

Back 4 Blood, if you ever played left4dead with a few friends on the hardest setting it was near perfection for a co-op game that required teamwork, skill and was a proper challenge.

Now that I finally have this thing I can say - and I'm sure this has been discussed to death but this is all brand new for me - the UI really is so fecking bad. I really don't know what they were thinking with a lot of the stuff, but some things are incredibly unintuitive and a clear step down from what we had on PS4. Honestly I'd scrap the entire thing and start again.

On the plus side, Astro's Playroom is every bit as good as I've read about, or even better. As someone who's played a ton of games on each PS generation, I had goosebumps every step of the way. Not just an incredibly crafted game but such a loving tribute to their entire history. I just wish there was more of it! Also, it's a shame someone like Jim Ryan will never understand what that PS1 boot screen and sound means to a lot of people.

I think it's a familiarity thing with the UI. It took me a week or two to get used to it but now I like it.

Press PS button once to bring up the quick menu and hold it down to return to the home screen. Once you get used to that it makes started chats etc quite easy.

I will never, ever get used to a horizontal list like what they're doing with each individual game's trophies.

You say that, but you will. The more you use it the more intuitive it becomes. It's not perfect by any means but I do think it's improved in several areas over PS4.

Horizontal lists can't be intuitive, that's something I thought we had already learned as a society. You can't read horizontal text at a glance like you can in vertical list. It doesn't work. It's objectively bad design.

Do you think the people who get paid to design UIs didn't think of that? Not taking the piss. Genuine question.

I don't love the UI either but I think it's fine.

I don't have an answer to that, as I just don't understand it. In UI design and web design in particular, horizontal scrolling has always been considered a potential bad experience or often outright bad design. It works in some cases, like pictures, but for content that is inherently like a list, such as trophies, it's terrible. My guess is they wanted to make scrolling through trophies more like scrolling through "moments", but is that really how most people use it? You lose the ability the see all the different trophy texts at a glance, not to mention that details like the unlock date and rarity are now hidden behind a button press while they were previously visible as part of the list.

I don't want to make this all about trophy lists, it's just one thing that annoyed me. I'll live with it but it's just silly to change stuff that was working and make it worse.

I think you're being a bit hysterical. It actually works well with the new cards and showing your progress.

Like I said it's a familiarity issue, not a inherent design problem. The more you use it the more you'll get used to it and the more intuitive it will feel. I think all PS5 users had the same thoughts at first because you got so use the PS4 interface.

For me the biggest issue was remembering to press the PS button once rather than holding it down.

There are definitely areas they can improve it, and they likely will, just like they did with PS4.

I can see why you say that but it's just one of those things that always gets to me. Taking something that works fine, changing it and making it worse. It can be the most inconsequential thing and I'm still sitting there like "Why?!". Even @esmufc07 hates it. :) I have no problem with the PS button by the way, that's fine.

I had never had a plat when I plugged in my PS5. I now have 8 and really enjoyed them all

Yes. These things are designed for aesthetics and sometimes just to be 'different' rather than focusing on user experience all the time.

And often there's very little time for real user testing and feedback especially when timed with a product launch that there's every chance it wasn't expected feedback until they got it in people's hands, or they got the feedback but just wouldn't have time to change it versus their other priorities.

I gave up even trying to buy one of these. Seems like you’d have to sit in front of your computer day after day to refresh a restock at just the right time. Complete joke.

I can understand that, I’m currently following someone on Twitter and in a discord, I know smyths in Ireland is getting stock soon and got stock last week the very minute I gave up and went back to sleep.

I buckled and paid £480 for a digital one. I just got tired of waiting!

Since then I've managed to grab a disk version so I'm trying to sell the Digital one, hoping to recoup £450 as it's only a month old. Trying to explain to people I'm actually losing money on it and not hoovering all the consoles up to make a profit is fun btw

You can register to get notifications, so you dont need to spend your day refreshing a dozen web pages. Seem relatively easy to get when you do. Know a couple of people who got one after about a week doing that.

Hotstock premium, cheaper than scalpers. Got me a PS5 within 2 days of trying, just have to react quick to the alerts.

I got sackboy and a second dualsense for £79 in a Prime Day sale. I think that's a decent price

Aiming for sales of 22.6m/year

On the morning of June 22, the Sony Group held a general meeting of shareholders in Tokyo. Mr. Kenichiro Yoshida, President and CEO of Sony Corporation, stressed that the company would accelerate the supply of PlayStation (PS) 5 in the next fiscal year to achieve sales of more than 22.6 million units per year, the largest ever in the history of PS. Against the backdrop of "nest egg" demand, the company aims to break the sales record of the original PS in fiscal 1998.

So.. still absolutely no hope at all of getting a console then unless glued to sites?
