Players considered World Class who you don't think are World Class

I used to feel this way about Griezmann prior to WC2022. I was wrong.

I once made a thread on Totti. Think it was the last football forum thread I ever did :nervous:

By your own admission you don't know what you're talking about

Jesus, give over. I admitted I never saw enough of the guy (other than his appearances against United), but you're obviously absolutely right.

Calm down.

Verratti. ultimate almost player. plays about 20 games per season and is always "coming back from injury". I seem to remember him having a good tournament at Euro 2020, even though he was injured there as well. of course.

The debate should be what world class actually means?

As for Davids, whatever way you want to define world class, he would have been in that category. In his prime, an absolute monster of a player.

I've had a wiki up and he has a great record. I guess not seeing him as often as the regular great Italian CL players just brings me back (unfairly) to that night at OT.

I retract my original thought and will head for YouTube...

Allright

I did actually. Laugh away. I'm a sensitive soul. You should have said, "Loon, check this YouTube video out and prepare to be amazed."

No harm done, mate.

My pick would be Julian Alvarez. Not a 100 million player and certainly not amongst the best players in the world. Nowhere near that. He's a good runner with great ball striking and work ethic. Literally dozens of players out there who would produce the same performances if they were given a chance at City. Would be struggling in a team where he has to carry them on his back, like Rashford and Bruno at United.

Also, how is no one arguing OP saying Neymar? We're talking about someone who would've won multiple Ballon d'Ors if Ronaldo and Messi weren't around. He had that magic in him that no one else had from the same generation, and he was still incredibly efficient. A hard worker as well, him being lazy on the pitch out of possession is closer to being a myth than reality. If anything, I think he's massively underrated. One of the most talented players of all time, and someone that I think will be appreciated more after he retires.

Luke Shaw

You don't hear it often anymore, but a couple of years ago many were calling him world class. I like Luke and think he's a good player. But, I never thought he was world class.

Which left backs are better than him?

What goes against Giggs was his finishing, he'd turn to jelly whenever a chance arrived.

Ah I hadnt even read your post, but I see the reactions to calling Totti overrated are much the same

(My thread argued the same).

Which left backs are better than him?

Grimaldo.

Grimaldo.

No.

Grimaldo plays in a back 5 with way less defensive responsibilities as well as mostly way worse opposition than what Shaw has to deal with in the PL.

He's having an incredible season in a wing-back/winger type role. Shaw playing left-back in a 4-man defense in a way tougher league is not just a more difficult job, it's also completely different. Shaw probably couldn't do what Grimaldo does, and Grimaldo would sure as hell not be able to replicate his current season in the PL. Same with Frimpong, by the way, on the other side of the pitch.

Are there any PL defenders, past or present, who could even get close to having a 20 G/A season other than Trent? Highly doubt it. Leverkusen has 2 doing it in the same squad this season.

It was a punt because he has a funny name.

I couldn't even say overrated, I just never witnessed the greatness people talk about. In fairness I didn't watch much Serie A only his no-shows in the CL so probably a disservice.

Roberto Carlos.

Famous for his FKs but other than that I never considered him worthy of the plaudits he seemed to receive at the time. Certainly not compared to many of his contemporaries. One of those players who probably benefited from many games not being easily accessible live at the time and so often all we saw was the highlights. The mystique surpassed the reality.

Theo, Davies, Grimaldo, Cancelo, Robbo, Di Marco

None of them can be considered objectively better. Just tells you how the casual general consensus doesn't rate Shaw due to social media narratives.

If Cancelo was left footed, maybe.

Davies is a worse defender than Shaw, which always gets brought up against the Englishman, even though he's played LCB very well several times.

Yaya Toure

Was the best midfielder when the league had a massive drop off in quality following the glory days of the mid 00's. He never showed the same form in the UCL against higher level teams.

Vincent Kompany

Again, was great in a weak league but never impressed that much in the UCL or on international duty.

Both great players but not world class, or amongst the best in the world in their position, in my opinion.

Toure is a great shout. Quintessential “montage” player that people look at him physically and see his gracefulness on the ball and think he’s the best midfielder in the world, but truthfully he was similar to Pogba in that he never cared about working hard defensively despite his freak size and physical profile. He was far more of an attacking midfielder that technically was a DM even though he wasn’t really. Brilliant player to watch though on his day.

Virgil Van Dijk.

I think he just stands out in a time when there are very few really good defenders out there. It was almost like he invented defending the way pundits were going on about him a few years ago.

Currently or just over the last 20 years or so?

Evra was a much better fullback. As was Ashley Cole. Marcelo, definitely. Jordi Alba surely.

In the PL, unfortunately Robinson has been a better lb than Shaw during the last couple of seasons. Pains me to say it.

Currently he apparently doesn’t rank top ten:

Pogba being another case. At Juventus he was labelled world class. Watching him in the CL against the best teams, I just didn’t see it.

Yeah I think in both instances they were players that were mislabeled and misprofiled. Put them in David Silvas body and watch them play and you call them an artist, but because they were so physically imposing you expect them to affect the game out of possession far more than they actually did.
