Barthez
Dodgy first half of the season, back to his world class best in the second part of the season. 6/10

Carroll
Steady first season. He'll be a good understudy at Man United, but I don't reckon he has the class or talent to become a regular first choice. 7/10

Gary Neville
IMO one of his best seasons for us. Played superbly when he was moved into the middle, and continued doing so when moved back to the flank. 8/10

Phil Neville
Good and reliable as an understudy. Always handy to have in the squad as he can fill in both at right and left back. Played well when he had a long run at right back. 7/10

Irwin
Although age is catching up, never let us down when called upon. 6/10

Silvestre
Dodgy start to the season, but has played every single match since left out against Chelsea before Christmas, and have been absolutely superb since then. 8/10

Blanc
The kind of CB I love watching. So composed on the ball, and brings it down and enables us to start attacking as soon as we've won the ball back, instead of hoofing the ball aimlessly. Superb since the initial settling-in period of a few weeks. 8/10

Brown
Season ruined by injuries. Suffered more than anyone at the start ofthe season with an unsettled defense and new partners every week. Has played well since returning the last month. Going to the World Cup will do his confidence a world of good. 6/10

Johnsen
Another season ruined by injury. when fit, a superb player, who seemed to play well together with Blanc. 7/10

Beckham
A strange season for Beckham - unusual inconsistent. Was superb after getting back in the team after Christmas, and has to get credit for his goalscoring record this season. 8/10

Keano
Superb as usual. Nuff said. 9/10

Butt
Has come on leaps and bounds thisseason - probably due to having had long runs in the team. Not a fancy player, but to his credit knows this and does stuff simple. 8/10

Giggs
Another good season for him. When on form one of the best players in Europe. 8/10

Scholes
Played out of position at the start of theseason, and his form suffered from this. Picked himself of in the second part of the season, and proved his worth to the team. Man United move the ball around so much better then he's on form. 7/10

Veron
Difficult first season for him, but has not been as bad as the press and his critics wants to make it out. Takes too long on the ball at times, and I reckon the teams movement has suffered from this. 6/10

van Nistelrooy
Superb first season. What is it now, 34 goals? The fans love him, and rightly so. 9/10

Solskjaer
Finally has got a regular place in the team, and have paid back with goals. While Ruud takes most of the headlines, Solkjaer has IMO been as good when played this season. 9/10

Forlan
Needs THAT goal..His movement is spot on, shows pace and composure on the ball, and the reports says his attitude is very good. Will become a good 3rd/4th coice striker IMO.

Players like Fortune, O'Shea, Chadwick, Stewart, Yorke etc haven't played enough to be judged..

nice thread..

BARTHEZ - 6.5 - lapses in concentration have been very costly. Improved in 2nd half os season, but damage already done.

CARROLL - 7 - has not let anyone down when he's played. good reliable stuff. one for the future.

IRWIN - 6 - only played in a handful. showed his class recently but no-longer first choice.

G NEVILLE - 8 - fantastic season. Held his composure well during the season when others were losing theirs. A steadying influence on the defence no matter what others think.

P NEVILLE - 6.5 - played well at Rb in an extended run, but since then has struggled for form. Doesnt help that hes seen as a 'utility' player.

JOHNSEN - 6.5 - showed his class when he's played, which unfortunately has not been enough again.

BLANC - 8 - still world class. joy to watch. Has proved a few knockers wrong.

SILVESTRE - 8 - big season from Mickey. Has made big improvements to his game, notably in concentration. One of the best LB's around when hes on form.

BROWN - 6 - disappointing stop and start season. A lot more was expected from his this season, especially as Fergie quoted his play as one reason he could let Stam go.

KEANE - 9 - awesome season yet again. Must be very frustrating season for him, as others have not played up to his standards.

BUTT - 8 - stepped into the breach and steadied the team earlier in the season. Impressed me immensely and Sven too. World cup squad place.

BECKHAM - 8 - disappointing early season, but wasnt everyone. Played like a man possessed since Christmas and weighed in with tons of goals. Very important member of the side.

SCHOLES - 7 - disappointing season by his season, but considering Fergie couldnt make up his mind where to play him most of the season, its not surprising. Best posistion is CM alongside Keane.

GIGGS - 7 - played in patches. Very good form for a couple of months but needed a little extra from him in some European matches.

FORTUNE - 6.5 - played well in the handful of matches he's played. I suspect will be sold.

VERON - 6 - Arrived with a huge fee & even bigger reputation. Very disappointed. Holds ball too long, frequently gives possession away.Has had a few good matches but too inconsistent. If he stays, the first few months of next season will be make or break.

OLE - 9 - Finally made that spot his own, forcing Cole to be sold and Yorke to fall faster than Humpty Dumpty. Good honest hardworking player with eye for goal, with which he's chipped in with a few. Uniteds best finisher IMO.

RUUD - 9 - What a season! who could have expected such a start to his United career. Banged them in left, right and centre. PFA player of the year and deservedly so.

FORLAN - 7 - works his socks off, tidy on the ball, good passer. Needs a goal soon though.

Honorable mention for O'SHEA whos looked really good when played.

Overall, for various reasons they havent really gelled as a team unit like in other seasons. Perhaps due to new players, Fergie's situation etc, but really settled into it after Christmas and showed the real United way of playing.

Barthez
Gave as good as he got and had the courage and determination to come back from those early lapses of concentration - our #1 keeper in 2002/03. 7/10

Carroll
Looks good. Made a few first-team appearances and I can see him as a first-choice keeper in the future. His handling of crosses and lack of communication with the defence worries me, but these will be corrected if needed. 6/10

Gary Neville
Great season again, one of our most consistent players over the years. England will miss him. 8/10

Phil Neville
Like Butt and Ole, Phil has come in to his own this season. There was a period in December / January when he was first-choice RB. 7/10

Irwin
Good luck next year Denis, shame your final year wasn't as good as some would have liked. His comments recently about Arsenal having to work for their title inspired me. 6/10

Silvestre
One of our most imporved players, an absolute steal from Inter Milan, bargain for SAF. 9/10

Blanc
One of our most imporved players, an absolute steal from Inter Milan, bargain for SAF. ;)
Seriously, one of the best defenders of his generation, ignore what the press say about him, he is class. 8/10

Brown
With Stam gone I thought this would be his season. Played well at times but injury stood in his way. 5/10

Johnsen
Hope he's earnt a new contract. Good understanding with Larry. 6/10

Beckham
This wasm the first time he has got about 15 goals isn't it ? He was inconsistent, but some of his goals (v Depor, West Ham) were breath-taking. Sorry it ended this way. 8/10

Keano
Nobody in the world is better in this position. 9/10

Butt
What an improvement ! Some would have thought Seba coming in would have meant bye-bye for Nicky, but he has done superbly and to beat Scholes and Seba to the line-up is a credit to the hard-work he has put in; never let's us down. 9/10

Giggs
Best LM in the world, had another good season, and not so many injuries. 8.5/10

Scholes
It is obvious the change in position effected him, and earlier this season were some pretty rough times for Paul. Still the best at playing as an attacking CM in the world imo. 7.5/10

Veron
Not as bad as other outsiders make out, but it looks like Seba just wanted to get this first year our of the way. Price tag and pressure to go back to Lazio were a hindrance. Has had touches of beauty, like goals against Everton, Bolton, Celtic and Derby. Just wait for next season. 6/10

van Nistelrooy
Fans adore him. 35+ goals in his first year, PFA Player of the Year, absolute genius. 9/10

Solskjaer
Well done Ole, this has to be his best season at United in terms of goals. How many has he scored now ? And people said he had to leave - suber-sub ? Yeah right. :) 9/10

Forlan
I agree he needs a goal to kick-start his career, but movement has been good, and it seems unlike other South Americans (I don't mean Veron ;) ) can hadnle English play. Can't rate him just yet, but if I had to, 6.5/10

Fortune, O'Shea and Cole (till he left) were important to us as well.

Barthez
Too much of an entertainer first half of season. Got better in the 2nd half, needs to be a bit more professional. no, a LOT more professional. 6/10

Carroll
MU should play him more. This guy got much to show. If Barthez goes, Carroll should take the helm. 7/10

Gary Neville
Excellent season, period. 9/10

Phil Neville
Needs to be more formidable, more attitude. He did alright this season. 7/10

Irwin
Time is not on his side, and definitely having a tough task of getting the better of him. 7/10

Silvestre
This guy rocks in general. 9/10

Blanc
Shaky start, solid since. 9/10

Brown
Injuries ruined a potentially great season, still awesome. 8/10

Johnsen
All around solid unless injured. 7/10

Beckham
Too good. 9.5/10

Keano
Too damn good. 10/10

Butt
Needs to be a regular first teamer. Waste on
bench.8/10

Giggs
Better than damn good, when fit. 9.7/10

Scholes
Excellent all around player, not one for important matches. 7/10

Veron
It’s friggin’ England, people. Wake up and give the man a rest. Not bad for first season, still world class. Players need to change their game slightly to a higher level yet simple with him in game. 8/10

van Nistelrooy
Someone posted here earlier this season that RVN won't do well and may get injured in the EPL ect. Hey, you can now kiss his anus.. 9.8/10

Solskjaer
Should be a first teamer. We don’t need another world class striker. 9/10

Forlan
At 22 years of age, this is the next Recoba. Should be 3rd striker but not for long.

Fortune
Excellent bench warner

O'Shea
Need more matches under his belt

Chadwick
Needs more aggression

Stewart
Future good stuff

Yorke
Lack of motivation should render him elsewhere

Gazza, have you actually seen Carroll play this season? taking the latest match against Ipswich for example, his handling was impeccable!! caught everything that went into the box.

Barthez: 7 when normal, 4 when the voices <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" /> have come into play.

Neville: 7 reliable as usually, a few shaky moments.

Blanc: 8 shaky at times, but superb more often than not.

Johnsen: 6 a few bad mistakes, but showed good pace and position in most oppurtunities.

Brown: 6 pretty much the same as Ronny.

Silvestre: 8 apart from blanc our most consistent defender, good pace and provides a good attacking option, has come on a lot this season.

Beckham: 9 strong, effective and cross ability again second to none, showed more pace and goal threat this season.

Keane: 10 the best player in europe, enough said.

Scholes: 7 dodgy start to the season, but has really come on since christmas

Butt: 9 when he has played, has looked immense, going to take over roy's mantle when he leaves, if thats is possible.

Giggs: 9 superb, freeflowing, pacey, a really star when he has been fit.

Van Nistelrooy: 10 what a season, deserves all the acoloades, so pleased for him especially after the injury.

Solksjaer: 9 this guy never ceases to amaze me, attitude is superb and is matched by his on the field activity.

Forlan: 6/7 has not really had enough 90mins under his belt, but looks promisind, great pace.

:)

27 Mickael Silvestre 8

2 Gary Neville 8.5

3 Denis Irwin 6

12 Phillip Neville 7

6 Laurent Blanc 8

5 Ronny Johnsen 7

24 Wes Brown 7

30 John O'Shea 7(not enough first team chances...he deserved more)

7 David Beckham 8

18 Paul Scholes 8

8 Nicky Butt 8(very consistent and hard working)

16 Roy Keane 10(the usual....extremely hard working and a great leader with loads of talent of course.)

11 Ryan Giggs 8.5

25 Fortune 7

10 Ruud Van Nistelrooy 9.5(no doubt....he was a star)

20 Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 9( although many people never noticed, he has scored over 25 goals this season.)

21 Diego Forlan 7.5(extremely hardworking and a great prospect...deserved that goal tho')

I haven't seen every game but, from what I've seen and read (in the neutral press) ...

· Fabien Barthez - 6.5 Although he is still one of the best shot stoppers in the world, his loss of concentration at critical moments in games cost us dearly and, imo, caused a lot of uncertainty in the defence in front of him.

· Roy Carroll - 7 Kind of unfair to give him a higher score than Fab but, I'm not comparing the two, I'm saying he's performed well in the games I've seen him play and will be a very capable and solid #2 for years to come.

· Michaël Silvestre - 7.5 Started a little shaky but has come on very well in the 2nd half. I think he could become a much bigger threat for us if only Giggs would stay wide left keeping opposition RB's busy.

· Laurent Blanc - 8.5 His reading of the game is some of the best I've seen. His lack of pace is a shame but he makes up for it positionally. One player I wish we'd have got a decade ago.

· Wesley Brown - 6.5 Seemed to have lost his confidence earlier in the season, then the injuries came. Looked a little more assured against BL so maybe he's back to his young self.

· Denis Irwin - 7 Didn't get many opportunities but, didn't put a foot wrong in the games I saw him play. Be sad to see him in another shirt next season.

· Ronny Johnsen - 7 Unlucky with injuries again. I'm not sure wether he'll be able to be our main man in the heart of our defence again. Did OK when he played and was a threat at the other end from corners etc too.

· Phil Neville - 7 Ultimate squad player and does what's asked of him in all positions. Doesn't set the pitch alight mind, but, he can play almost anywhere in MF or defence.

· Gary Neville - 8 Stepped up after the terrible 6-3-6 start. Once he moved into the middle and asserted himself, the defence seemed to play more as a unit again.

· Ryan Giggs - 7 Probably more disappointed with Giggsy than anyone (other than JSV) this season. Although he had a few sparks of genius here and there, his wandering, loss of possession and bad final pass/cross/shot all combined for an under par season for him imo.

· Juan Sebastian Verón - 6 And that's a generous 6. Anyone who know's my posts knows I have defended Seba all season, as I still do, but, his performance over the whole season has been disappointing. Call it acclimatising, culture shock, a niggling injury or whatever, it doesn't matter, he's been disappointing. I hope he stays and I hope he shows United fans what he's capable of.

· Quinton Fortune - 7 Impressed me the few times he's played but doesn't play often enough to get any consistency going.

· Paul Scholes - 6.5 The worst season I've seen Scholesy ever have. No doubt the formation change and the arrival of Seba didn't help but for whatever reason, his season as a whole was disappointing.

· Roy Keane - 9.5 By far our player of the season imo and without a doubt, the driving force behind our team. United look like a different team when he isn't playing.

· Nicky Butt - 8.5 Proved this season what an important player he is to United. His role should be more defined in the future imo and I think his role is definitely one of a holding/defensive midfielder.

· David Beckham - 7.5 Looked like shit after his England exploits but was coming good until his injury which is a shame. I think with his width, we would have got past BL.

· Ruud van Nistelrooy - 9 Surpassed any hopes I had of him this season. Has set high standards for himself in the future and hopefully he'll be able to reach them again. His fist touch could use some work but that's being really picky on my part.

· Ole Gunnar Solskjær - 9 Great goalscorer and once again, he's proved he deserves to start as a 1st choice striker.

· Diego Forlán - 8 Nothing but encouraged by him. Even though he hasn't scored, he's shown a fantastic desire and looks like becoming an excellent understudy to RVN & OGS.

Are you sure????

giggs had a good season. I well remember that 3-4 weeks ago everybody here was full of praise. So 5 is a bit of a joke. The fact that he was shit against BL should not overshadow the whole season imo. I would give him a 7,5 for the season.

Quite sure. Neither have had particularly great seasons. You want me to question your 8 for Scholes? I personally thought that was crazy, for he hasn't played that well this season.

I wasn't questioning the marks, as much as the equal rating.

Whether or not Scholes has had a good season, he's been better than Seba.

Early season mistakes cost us dearly

G Neville 6.5
Was a member of that defence in October/November, but played better when switched to centre back

Silvestre 7
Transformed from the player that first arrived. But does rely on his pace to get him out of trouble defensively

Blanc 7
Without him the defence would have fallen apart even more

Johnsen 6
An 8 when playing - but doean't play nearly often enough

Brown 6
Injured too oftehn to develop. Maybe next year?

P Neville 6
Only gets a six since he scored twice. Handy utility player, never anything more

Irwin 6
Could have been used more often during the 'dodgy' defensive spell.

Fortune 6
Again, didn't play enough, but when he did, didn't let the side down

Beckham 7
Scored plenty of goals, but really went off the boil around Christmas, thanks to his England activities perhaps?

Veron 6
Expected a world beater for £28mil. Could still be, but wasn't this season.

Keane 10
No need to say any more...

Giggs 7
Excellet near the end of the season - but what was he trying to do against Leverkusen away?

Butt 8
Better bet that Veron - and he cost £28 mil. Very effective alongside Keane

Scholes 6
Poor start to the season and has recovered a little. Still, not up to previous standards

Forlan 6
Bless him. he tries his heart out. On the verge of collapse against Ipswich in final minutes, love to see him score before end of season

Solskjaer 8
Need a goal - Ole's the man. Supreme finishing. pity he wans't playing a smuch at the start of the season

Van Nistelrooy 10
Couldn't have asked for any more. Along with Keane has been driving the team on this year. Deserves better from some team mates...

Yorke 1
(and that's for his goal - was it against Leicester or Ipswich... forgotten... guess that says it all )

Carroll 7
Never let us down... if anything, more reliable that Barthez

The season was finally ended and here are what I feell about the players performance in this season. First my marking system:
10: god-like 9: exceptionally excellent 8: excellent 7: good 6. average 5. below average 4: bad 3 or below: should be get rid asap

Barthez (5): Made some very serious mistake in early season and directly lost us matches. Have improved in the latter period, but still not to his standard in last season. Watched the home match against Arsenal, and he once again kicked a back pass directly to the foot of an Arsenal player. We should start to look for replacement. It seems cruel to him -- but honestly, the goalie is a position you need absolute reliability. Anything other than that is unacceptable.

Carroll (6): Not much chance to play. When he played he seems average but not outstanding.

Gary Neville (7): Maintain a steady performance throughout the season. Has contribute a lot to stablize our defence when he played in the centre with Blanc.

Phillip Neville (7): Has performed well BY HIS STANDARD.

Blanc (7.5): Need some time to gel in to the team, but has been excellent in the second part of the season (so it's 7 in first half, 8 in second half of the season). His positioning and reading of the game are just pure class.

Johnsen (7): He played well, in the short period he actually played.

Brown (6): A little disappointing in the early season, but that's an expected thing for a young defender. Has played well since coming back from injury in the last few matches.

O'Shea (7): Big discovery this season.

Silverster (8): He has been excellent throughout the season. Use his pace to rescue a couple of fatal situations, as well as providing a lot of great run from the left.

Beckham (8): His form has suffered after some England's games in early season. But he has been playing well after the new year, scoring his personal high record number and his goals against West Ham and Deportivo are just fxxking brilliant.

Keane (8): Always reliable, stable and competitive. Not afriad to speak out for the sake of the team. He is the kind of player you can 100% trust.

Scholes (5.5): Sorry for him. His low mark in this season mainly due to the fxxking tactics of Fergie.

Veron (5): He MAY be a legend latter. But if only counting this season, he must be a failure.

Butt (7): Good performance, again BY HIS STANDARD.

Giggs (6.5): Hard to judge. Still doing things that only he can do occasionally, but surely there were too many ordinary or average performances from him this season.

Fortune (6) Chadwick (6)

Van Nistelrooy (9): Over 30 goals, break the continueous scoring record of PL, winner of Players of the Season awrad.... Do I still need to explain why he got a 9 mark?

Solsjkaer (7.5): His best season with us. After finally got a regular starting place in the team he has shown he is a truly world class finisher.

Forlan (6): Must be patient and give him time.

Yorke (2): That's the mark given to a player who have lost his place even in the reserve.

Barthez: Made some shocking howlers that have proven to cost us dear, unforgiveable. 5/10

Blanc: Bad start, settled in very well. Very composed and calm. 7/10

G.Neville: Reliable as ever, gutted for him to miss the WC. 8/10

Wes Brown: Mixed season, poor early on, then injured, but recovered form and fitness well. 6/10

Silvestre: Weak start, but came into his own after December. Can only get better. 7/10

Giggs: Good consistent season, but I hope he returns to the left wing next season, he's most effective there IMO. 8/10

Beckham: Had a horrid early season when he was dropped, but returned with the sort of charcter that impressed many people after the '98 World Cup. Sad that he got injured just when he was playing so brilliantly. 8/10

Keane: Our best player this season by far, don't know what we'll do without him. 9/10

Scholes: Probably his worst season ever. Been messed around to accomodate Veron, and it's affected his form big time. Needs to revert back to centrl mifield without Veron blocking his path. 5/10

Veron: For his price tag, this season has been a nightmare. Has all the ability in the world, but is the type of player that needs the team built around him, and that ain't gonna happen at Old Trafford. Best if we return him to Lazio to be honest. 5/10

RVN: Brilliant first season, needs to play alongside Ole or a new striker rather than up front alone. Will score more next season. 9/10

Ole: This man is a genius and must be a regular next season. RVN's game improves greatly too when paired with Ole, an absoulte gem who's scored an amazing amount of goals considering he's not a regular. 8/10

Bloody hell, you're hard to please.......yet you give Yorke 5, same as Irwin and Johnsen, who have been reasonable impressive in their few games.</strong><hr></blockquote>

The fact is a 7 is a good rating, 8 is very good and 9 is outstanding. As far as the above mentioned players, I gave Irwin a 5 because he basically is out of gas. Yorke a 5 because he didn't do anything positive this season. And Johnsen a 5 not besause he played poorly, but because he had another disappointing season of injuries. So, yes I am very disappointed with Johnsen's season even though I can't blame him for his continued misfortunes of injuries.

Anyone who received a 7 or better had a good season. IMO, RVN had the best season because he played at a very high level on a consistent basis.
