PL International Cup: Manchester United vs Villarreal

Surprisingly good by United. By far their best performance of the season - so far at least

Impressive half from the lads as a collective. Riley, Scott, Hamilton and Harrop the standouts to me so far

For a team without a striker and seemingly no wingers this is very good.

Joyce certainly knows how to organise and motivate a team.

What is Hamilton's natural position?
CM is probably his best position but he's played lb, cm, lm and striker and even played cb a couple of times. He's been excellent so far in this game.

I wish we'd give Riley a go at right back. He's no left foot and it limits a lot of the good work he does. On top of that he's no chance of getting into the first team as a left back whilst there's a definite opening on the other side.

Completely agree and have been thinking this for a while, however as long as there's a need at left back in the Under 23s he'll play there. Unless CBJ comes back early from Wolves or Joyce decides to swap Joe and El Fitouri randomly, Riley will be there for a while. As far as a first team call up I wouldn't really worry about it as if Jose called for a right back then I'm sure Joyce would send Joe up, he has trained with the first team a few times this season already.

Yeah true. I think Fitouri being the right back makes it even more baffling. He's clearly not good enough.

With youth players having a pretty small chance of making it I think it's important they play in the position that gets the most out of them.

So Harrop for example, can he make it at the top level as a No.10? I'm not sure he's got enough goals or end product to do so. As a No.8 though he could maybe do something. Technically very good, very consistent passing and touch, change of pace and crucially he's got some aggression. If I was him I'd be looking to change my game a bit if it gives him a better chance of making it.

Agreed, would be a smart move on the coaches part to move him although he's probably needed further up the pitch right now for the Under 23s.

Yeah he is. This is all easy for me to say but Joyce has to consider the overall team not just individual development.

Yeah I've seen him play in lots of different positions and yeah he has been impressive. How old is he?

Pretty much the best what we can expect from this group, great battling display from the boys and a deserved win.

good interview with Harrop.
speaks to the point, seems intelligent and not using the usual cliches

We will soon change that. He needs to be speaking in impossible percentages, use the words 'team' and 'lads' in every other sentence. Throw in some 'game at a time' and 'at the end of the day's' and we got ourselves a footballer.

How has Poole done since moving to United?

I've been impressed with him. He's only 18. He seems like a well grounded lad. Committed and focused whenever he plays.

We have an embarrassment of riches between Poole, Tuanzebe and RoShaun Williams. One of them has to make it, surely.

The replay of this game will be on MUTV in a few mins for anyone who missed it yesterday like myself.

Tuanzebe will make his first debut this season. Not sure if Mourinho can ignore this dominant displays at such an age.

Just finished watching it, some thoughts:
- Hamilton's gonna be a vital player for the U21s this season.Despite his best position being CM like almost everyone else, his penetration allows the team to push the opponents back and he has some certain smoothness on the ball which allow him to run at the players and not just pass the ball back and forth.
- Harrop is much better deeper. His decision making in the final third sometimes frustrate me.
- Willock had a good game.Playing out of position and all that but he shown his abilities to beat players and keep possession under pressure which are necessary to catch the manager's eyes (our manager or those that might interest in him)
- Good to see Riley making those rampaging runs again.Didn't have enough space and time to do it in the last few games.
- Osolunde is a very althletic player. Can see him doing well in many positions.
- Tuanzebe is taking the piss at this level these days. One of his run going forward then turn the marker and shoot was class.Should have been more agressive in one of the Villareal's chance.
- Poole did well. He's developing into a sort of no nonsense defender who read the game well.
- Scott should be ahead of El-Fitouri in the pecking order already.
