Agreed, but It surely must say that he is at least able to play. If he is physically unable to fulfil his contractual obligations for an extended period of time surely that is grounds for cancellation?
That would depend on what is written in the contract, but it will be covered. A major reason for a player to sign a contract for a period of time is to pass the risk of injury or loss of form on to the club, rather than bearing that risk themself, and having nothing if unable to play.
Any idea what he has been up to for the last few years. I'm sure the club would be facilitating care for his mental health and it's not far fetched to assume that maybe he's either picked up a hobby or revisited a childhood one.

Technically speaking, he's picking up those injuries fulfilling his contractual agreement by training whenever the medical staff deem it appropriate.
Beyond that I don't think any player would be signing a contract that becomes null and void when they're injured.
Good question. I vaguely remember reading that insurance for that became so high (understandably) that clubs stopped buying it. In effect they insure themselves, standing the loss where it occurs, but saving paying more to insurance companies in the long run. The FA still insures players for internationals I think, if a player is badly injured on England duty the club gets a pay out.

Because I always see talk of Jones mental health issues in these threads but not sure what all this conjecture is based upon. Unless it has been confirmed it always seems a bit inappropriate to assume someone has mental health problems and discuss them as if it were fact.
Good point, I did not mean to imply with certainty that he has mental health issues per se, but considering the attention that is being paid to players' mental health in general now a days, I'm sure he'd be seeing someone occasionally at the very least.
Let's not also pretend that the situation he has been in is normal, add to that the online abuse/trolling he is subjected to, It's not far fetched to think that it could bother him at some level. But, you're right, it is mildly inappropriate to assume that he has mental health issues.
I'm not a lawyer, so I'm not pretending to know anything for certain here, but I do know that the rules are very strict. I remember looking a bit into this a few years ago, and there was this case where a footballer was left paralyzed after a car accident. The club terminated his contract on the grounds that it was a long-term injury that wasn't football related, and that it was his own fault, but FIFA ruled against the club.
Don't get me wrong I didn't mean to have a go at you mate, it's just a general theme in these Jones threads these days. I'm sure it's quite likely he may have some issues he's dealing with because of his situation.
But I just think these discussions should be steered away from openly discussing someone having mental health problems based on assumption.

I ask again, how is that his fault? He signed a contract in good faith, is he meant to turn around and say “nah I can’t take that”?

Are you confused? I explained in my post why I found it hard to muster up sympathy for him. I didn't assign blame to him.

It was during the spate of players running into the last year and we resigned them to try and get more value.
Then you are confused because nowhere in that post can you explain how I placed blame on him, only that I don't feel sympathy for someone who on the face of it is massively winning in life. He's played a couple hundred games for Man Utd, been capped for England and is likely a multi-millionaire in his twenties with his whole life ahead of him. I'll reserve my sympathy for the less fortunate than I. That's not blaming him.
I think he’s done at this level unfortunately. Recall thinking that the last time he played. Sort of like when Neville returned from injury, you could just tell he couldn’t cope with the pace of the PL.

Your comment re money makes it sound like it’s his fault that he’s getting paid. That’s how it comes across. His salary should have nothing to do with it

Ole came in December and Jones extended in Feb. Doubt if Ole had much say in it.
Ole said Jones will join training over the weekend and will "now he's ready to train with us". Read that on the official website.

I think it was a decision by the club as a whole in the hope we would get a few decent games out him and get a fee.
I can't imagine Ole seriously thought he was a long term option no matter what he said in the press.
Players were moving for nuts fees, even as bang average back ups from clubs. It was a gamble that didn't pay off obviously.
You'd think any potential groundwork for contract renewal would have been laid before Ole's arrival. I could be wrong mind you.
Ole was never going to come in and do an immediate U turn if that was the case.
Nor was he likely to say 'yeah we have renewed his contract, feck all to do with me I think he's shite but we could get a Bob or two from Brucey I suppose'.
I feel for Jones. There was a player in there and he had more than enough ability to have a good career. His injuries have been shocking and he has always come across a decent lad. Hopefully he finds his way in the game again. I genuinely hope so.
Ole was a caretaker until March and as even his future at United was uncertain back then of course he had no say in it.
Btw I read somewhere that Newcastle and WH are interested in Jones if United could let him leave on a free. Imo it's probably the best for everyone involved. It's not like anyone would pay a fee for him anyway.

This is mostly true but I'd wager a few teams would risk him on a free if his wages with us were not so ridiculous.

I still remember reading somewhere that even Jones was quite surprised when we handled him the new contract. So this was rather on our clueless board than Jones and his agent I think.

Ole had nothing to do with it. Woodward anx the club wanting to 'protect' the transfer value of players. Like givig Bailly a new deal as well. We really do have a problem (woodward does) with selling players for less than what we paid for them. Just get rid of. Lingaard is a good example, was bang in form for WestHam should have done a deal then got £20mil for him or something. But no, so we have a player who wont get much game time hanging around the club.
