Some great defending tonight by Jones. Seemed to be more disciplined which was good to see.
 
Heart on his sleeve tonight, as ever. All his strengths and flaws there for all to see. Campbell had him on toast at times but some really stirring interventions too. Impossible not to love.
 
Can get too tight to his opponents sometimes and can be easily turned but he's a great defender, reads the game well, puts in 100% and puts his head anywhere.

Hopefully he can iron out his flaws over the next few years and become one of the top defenders, I certaintly believe he can do this along with Smalling. He needs to stop throwing himself into tackles, did it for the first tackle tonight and limped away. Obviously it's fantastic to see when he wins the ball but not if it's too the detriment of his career.

He needs to realise that he doesn't always have to make the ball, stand the attacker up, wait for him to make the first move etc, the penalty he conceded to Allen is a prime example, he was never going to get the ball, it was Joe Allen with a ball launched into his chest, he wasn't going anywhere, stand him up and show him into the corner.
 
Needs to calm down, and he'd be great. His two biggest issues are both from over-exuberance:

1. Getting dragged out of position trying to mark too tightly
2. Hurting himself by unnecessarily throwing his body at the ball/opponent
 
It's not about the height, it's what you do with it as they say. Or is that about something else?
 
I love Jones but he has a remarkable knack for being the cause of goals in almost every big game he plays in.
 
He needs to improve his decision making with regards to just hoofing the ball away and trying to dribble it out of the box. He tries dribbling it way too often for my liking and gets caught in possession and then out of position.
 
He has to play more with Rio, he has everything in him to become one of the greats.
 
Yeah, made an absolutely ludicrous attempt at a tackle in the opening minutes. Had just done really well at stopping Cambell on a break, then made wild lunge at a ball he hadn't a hope of winning cleanly. Such a brave and reckless player. Constantly on the edge of doing himself a serious injury.

I'm sure he'll cut that sort of thing out as he matures. Just have to hope he doesn't do himself permanent damage meanwhile!
 
He's just not a natural centreback. Nor is he a natural midfielder for that matter.

This one is going to take years to turn into an effective player, even though all the ingredients are so obvious to see right now.

He looks less composed than he did playing CB last season. He was good in the air but quite dodgy, although he wasn't helped by Evra going AWOL. Not sure why people are criticising Rio, yeah he dropped a couple of yards deeper than the rest of the back four but that's because Rafael and Jones were stepping up constantly, trying to win every ball.
 
It's interesting how he always escapes criticism. Again at fault for the goal, and loads of individual mistakes and bad positioning, late reactions, etc.

I am really surprised how anyone finds him better than Evans and Smalling, it's not even close.
 
He was hailed as a monstrous talent in defence when we bought him... not seeing much evidence of it so far. Smalling is far better.
 
He's a midfielder, and a much better one that the hairy lump we're currently playing there.
 
Phil Jones just turned 22 and has to play alongside a retired Ferdinand. Give him some time and a true leader in defense and he'll develop into a great CB.
 
Aye, he's repeatedly hung out to dry by being partnered with Rio more often than not. When he plays alongside Jonny or Smalling he looks pretty good, but should still clearly be the third choice there.

I do like Jones, but like I argued for ages, he's well behind the likes of Smalling when it comes to the innate defensive duties such as positioning and reading of the game. He's rash, and he'll improve given the chances to make his mistakes, but Smalling always has been and still is the better defender. As is Evans.
 
Terrible today I thought. He was charging out all over the pitch in the first half and City passed around him so easily. Showed his age today, made mistake after mistake.
 
It's not amazing how he escapes criticism, he's partnered with Ferdinand, Carrick and Evra all of whom have nowt mobility anymore. He shouldn't have had to track Silva in those first 20 mins, I presume it was supposed to be a midfield 3 but Moyes shat it and shunted Cleverley out wide and Carrick went hiding whilst Fellaini tried to play up front.
 
I didnt think he was bad, but I was dissappointed because I have a lot of belief in him as a CB. Anyone playing next to Rio has a job on their hands, but Jones wasn't really up to it tonight. The best of the two by a clear mile, he was troubled a fair bit and mistakes were made.
 
Can we start a sweepstake on the exact minute Phil Jones will limp in every match plays in?

His positioning needs a lot of work.
 
Shit my pants when he started to hold his leg after kicking the ball out for a throw. Losing another defender is the last thing we need.

Yup, especially that we've had no defender on the bench. Was glad to see him stay for the second half...

... just to see Rafael replaced by Carrick because it was him who got injured.

This is fecking annoying really.
 
I think it's time to put Phil 'The Power' Jones back in midfield for the game against Bayern on Tuesday. He did an awesome job breaking up play against Madrid last season and he'll be pivotal to us being solid in midfield against a Bayern side who love to move the ball quickly, in my opinion.


 
Rio and Vidic are fit. If one of them gets injured (fingers crossed they don't) we can put Jones back in defence and bring on a midfielder.

After watching City, we struggle when teams move the ball quick with Carrick and Fellaini. With Jones, it'll give us a bit more dynamism, hopefully making up for Carrick (I take it he'll start) lack of.
 
I suppose, but Bayern may be more patient in possession. Carrick is sure to start, Giggs probably too. Moyes might opt for the three in midfield like the City game, hopefully the players are more informed of their roles this time round though.
