I actually like it when we play Jones in the CB position just as much(if not more) as I like it when he plays in the CM position. It forces us to press higher, which I think we've been really bad at ever since Moyes took over.

We've been awful at pressing for years now, not just under Moyes.

Good video, mate.

Advice: cut out irrelevant parts and focus more on Jones, rather than capture a lot of play beforehand. Makes video-making easier.

thx man!

was really hard because, well... sometimes, he started a offensive move... then after some touches up the pitch from the more offensive players, they lost the ball, and is Jones who recovers it back, so i like to consider that as the same play, a continuum. Or like that ball he recovers and end up in the Evra goal. Basically trying to put in perspective his participation in the game.

but yeah... need to make it shorter next time... or i will run out of long rocks songs.xd

ps. the files i used, might have been corrupted as well (mkv)... it was a pain in the ass, took me so many hours to do this simple video, but at least i enjoyed making this.

Nice one.

What did you use to edit the clips?

MKV is a container file, but instead of converting it, there is a remux program which allows you to use the file on Sony Vegas. It takes 10 minutes max.

Well that's the first 17 minute player compilation I have ever watched. I'd take MoneyMay's advice though.

windows movie maker, just want to keep it simple. Had to install some mkv splitter to be able to do it, but still worked like crap most of the time. xd

Sony vegas, final cut... those are too advanced for me now i guess.

stay tuned for my next phil jones comp, promise it will be shorter. :D

Yeah, he's really starting to impress me in midfield. Its not just that he wins the ball, but he can actually carry it forward and his passing has improved a lot.

There's no end to his talent.

Very impressive today.

I don't think playing in midfield harms his future as a CB too much. He can pass now!

He's so ace. Starting to think Smalling and Evans with Jones holding in front is perfect.

I keep saying it, but his awareness for danger and knowing when to meet the ball to cut out passes is outrageously good for such a young player. He's just stepping into forward passes from the opposition, and making it look easy.

Looking more and more comfortable in midfield with each passing game. Still think he is a centreback by nature but this lad is amazing. Basically he is doing what Fellaini was supposed to do.

Ferguson said that Jones could become the most important player for United over the coming years..that is how much he had confidence in his talent and ability...looks like the big man may be right.

Always preferred him in midfield and with the Smalling/Evans partnership looking so positive I would be happy for Moyes to move him there permanently. It's amazing that with such irregular game time in midfield that Jones has taken to the role so well, its such a hard position to play.

Looked really good in midfield today, particularity driving forward with the ball in the first half a few times. I'm really starting to like having him as a DM in front of the back four.

Yeah I thought the way that sometimes he'd just drop back and make it almost a back 3, allowing Evra and Rafael to push up, was great. It's similar to the way that Busquets filled in at Barca.

yep, its just a really solid foundation that gives every other player more freedom to move about and create something on the ball

Quite interesting how in the 2nd half he often stepped into defense to make it a back 3 with Smalling and Evans either side of him

Yep. i noticed that. Reverse of what Mascherano used to do at Barca.

Brilliant from Phil today! Took some stick from the stretty for turning his back on the action and complaining for not being given the ball by Valencia when WHU broke for the goal.Otherwise he was faultless!

Turning into the CM/DM I always knew he could become. I'm not sure why so many thought it would be difficult for him as he is a very intelligent footballer and that is the position he played on a lot of occasions at Blackburn.

I think far from him making CB his position in years to come he will instead become a CM/DM who occasionally drops back to CB when needed.

he could be our Javi Martinez

Right now I see Jones as a footballing centre back who can play in midfield like Pepe, rather than a Javi Martinez type player who is just as good in defence as he is in midfield. But I have been impressed by Jones´efforts in midfield and his growing understanding of how to play there.

I still don´t feel Jones thinks like a midfielder, and that shows in the positions he takes up on the field sometimes, but he is starting to make the right movements and hit the right spaces. Jones looks like he has been studying the tapes and trying to pick up a sense of how to really be a top defensive midfielder, and based on how committed he is I wouldn´t rule out him pulling it off through sheer force of will.

-----------------De Gea--------------
-----------Smalling---Evans---------
--Rafael---------Jones--------Fabio
-------------Powell---New cm-------
----Zaha-----------------------Januzaj
-----------------Welbeck---------------

Barkley anyone?

At this point, I really don't know whether he'll end up in CM or CB. Never thought I'd say that. In addition, his technique has become quiet good too!

His form so far has been brilliant and is slowly but surely becoming a key player.

Can we all just agree he's not a right back.

Who knows he might even master that one, but as it stands I do hate seeing him in that role. He's playing very well in that midfield role now, what I like is that he actually wants it to feet even in tight situations.. something our other midfielders don't have the bravery to do and he actually 'attacks the space' when he sees an opportunity rather than make a safe sideways pass. Really has helped us out a tight hole this past week.
