Phil Foden - What Is His Potential?

Himself Sancho and Greenwood have world class potential.

Sancho is the furthest ahead right now due to starting his career so much earlier.

Greenwood a year younger than the other two so is also doing well.

If I was to guess by the ends of their careers
Foden will be considered the best then Sancho and then Greenwood.

A large part of that will like be that I suspect
city to maintain their dominance and unfortunately expect us to be up and down a lot still.

I would hazard a guess to say that it will be the opposite and Mason will become the most important of the 3 players followed by Sancho. Let’s check back in 5 years

I would hope. And think he easily has the talent for it.

They are all very close.

That's why I think the City factor could edge it

Yup. Southgate basically blaming him for the entire team playing poorly.
Seriously, Saka had more dribbles in 15 minutes then Foden in the entire Tournament. Stop with the conspiracy theories, he hasn't performed and the guys like Sancho , Saka , Grealish are ahead of him.

Swap Saka into the ultra compact Scotland game against arguably the best left back in the world and Foden into the wide open Czech game and you'll see Foden dribble more too.

Are we actually convinced Foden is going to be a wide forward? I wonder if he's really going to develop the output for those roles. He's always going to be more of a slightly pacier Bernardo Silva type out there, very technical but somehow it feels like he'd be better if he was in the game a little bit more.

Perhaps it works out for City, I think they can do things other clubs can't with Pep in charge and the very coherent way of playing, but for England he's far too isolated, you have one of the best technical players ploughing a lone furrow out wide. I think he'd be better in that Mason Mount role at some point.

I must confess that I rated Saka above Foden even before the Euro.

I think his best position would be as left side CM in a 3 but can basically play in 4-5 positions. Would love him at Utd

I don't think this should be even controversial. Amidst Arsenal's terrible season at least Saka was a shining light and he seems a great talent.

For me he is no more a wide forward than Greenwood. Both are hugely talented and of course doing well there. I still think both look best when they wander inside.

I think Foden can become a wonderful number 10. His one touch passing, balance and awareness is ideal for the role to me. Of course he has DeBruyne at City and so far SOuthgate has favoured Mount there for England.

I also think Greenwoods future is up front, he reminds me so much of Vanpersie with his technique and movement and of course he started out wide too at Arsenal.

People criticising his potential in performances for England. Remember he is very young and its about the current team rather than individuals and unrelated to club football. You could argue bar Saka none of our most talented players ability wise are starting for ENgland, obviously there is TAA and Greenwood at home, but Bellingham, Grealish, FOden and Sancho in terms of natural ability I think are all at a higher level than the players starting ahead of them, Southgate seems to be thiking more of the shape and defensive work off the ball and though who knows, we may have done even better than we have performance and results wise, the fact his decisions have got us to the final, cant argue against it

Imagine if City played Foden in central midfield instead of out wide...I realize it was against Andorra but some of his passing was sensational.

He's getting into that scary territory imo. Looks another level from just a year ago. Touch, vision and understanding of the game is pretty unparalled in his age group.

Great for England and City :(

He’ll get his time in the centre. De Bryune and Gundogan aren’t going to play forever.

Spot on. His ability on the ball is just mesmeric. He should be playing in that position for City.

Also the trouble with England is that Phillips and Henderson will be played in the so called bigger games which means a big loss in creativity and boring football.

Pep moves pretty much all of his players around for better or worse.
Foden is the best in the team in most of the positions he's asked to play.
He and Torres are our most clinical finishers.

There’s more to playing in central midfield than a few crossfield rakers too.

I don't know man. I worry if he plays in the center..combined with KDB I can imagine them finding all sorts of runners...scary for me

Against Andorra without a lot of pressure. He's a very good player no doubt but in the video, he has more than a second to see the runner in front of him before making the pass. It'll take far more to really impress at that position. KdB, Pogba (in a good day), they're able to see things we don't even see on TV before it happens sometimes, because of their movement awareness.

Exactly this. Cracking little player but it's Andorra ffs...they were dreadful. Let's not get carried away.

I think tonight we could see the future for Man City and Foden. Passing the ball with inside and outside of foot was exceptional. 5 yrd or 25yrd passes no problem. Yes Andorra were crap but Foden given a central mid field role tonight for the first time was looking into the future
for club and Country. Now I can see why his nickname is the Stockport 'Xavi'

Well Pep did it with KDB when he first joined so that could well be the long term plan given Grealish signed.

Foden to me is generational talent. I think it makes sense for England NT to try him a bit more central and see if he can impact on build up from deeper positions which a) England badly lacks having that type of midfielder and b) options for left side now include Grealish, Sancho, Saka and Rashford will also probably be back for the November games so pretty much an overload there like right back.

Would rather have Foden in central midfield than Mount.

Grealish with always lack the pace to be a top level left winger. If Foden plays a more central role, with KdB on top of that, Grealish will pretty much be useless unless City is trying to win the "foul against" stat game.

Rice is ahead of Henderson and Phillips in pecking order.

Think a midfield England trio at CM for Qatar of :

Rice

Foden Bellingham

feels like something Southgate really should be considering and then you likely have Grealish-Kane-Sterling infront for the balance of creativity and directness. Plus endless impact sub options on the bench.

Of course it will be beyond him and he'll stick with 7 defenders against any half decent opposition.

Best I've ever seen him play. From start to finish, he was class. His passing out of this world.

Pep needs to start playing him in centre midfield more often.

Should be playing a free role but that doesn't exist in a Pep side. He'll probably peak under another coach.

Unfortunately people are getting carried away as usual. He’s a good player but the hyperbole is mind boggling at times.

Reminds me of the Gavi hype a couple of days ago (even if Foden is a FAR more accomplished player). Just because he looked better than Verratti in a bad physical shape, he was suddenly taking over Europe because of one game when he actually didn't do much. Being consistant at the highest level is a totally different story.

Yeah he needs to play well against the likes of Liverpool and win PFA awards before we can take him seriously.

He needs to play consistently well in big games rather than underwhelm more often than not. If he can't even do that, then the "Stockport Xavi" moniker is silly. He isn't even a knock off version of Xavi.

Thar midfield 3 has a bit of everything.

Great stuff.

Like I said: cracking little player but Andorra is not a yardstick against which to judge him.

Agreed

Well I don’t think Gavi has been hyped anything like Foden has, he’s a newcomer and much younger. But at least he was playing against the European champions and not a group of semi-professionals.
