Phil Foden - [insert title update here as he is past the "has he got potential?" point now]

Insulting a player has gone on for many decades, right or wrong it's part of the fan culture.

Insulting not the player, but a member of his family isn't something that happens very often at all, which is why Pep was asked the question and why this thread is going.

If Man United fans had sung that Foden was ugly or was shit or had a bad haircut or was a slag then nobody would've cared. That didn't happen though, they went for his family.

I'm going to agree to disagree, this is just going to go around in circles but I enjoyed the debate at least.

It’s clearly not worse to call someone’s mum a slag than tell them they look like a rat.

If Fodens mum had never made the papers this wouldn’t even be a story. The only reason some people are taking so much proxy offence to it is because she actually has acted badly in the public eye.
I disagree - big difference. Going after someone's mum, that's just not on in my book. But looks is fair game.

He’s been awful for a while but nothing gets said. When it’s one of our players it makes the newspapers everyday.

To be fair, Rashford stunk out the joint for the best part of two seasons and you still had pundits asking "why was he dropped?"

Definitely a thing for British players then. Foreign players get rinsed loads

You were right about one thing, though. Crybaby grown men outraged at the fact someone didn't like their lame chant are the exact people who would vote reform.

I highly doubt this would get such a lengthy article from the BBC if any other fanbase had sung it, but I gave it a read. What I think a lot of journalists are failing to grasp is that many fans behave in a stadium in a similar way to how they'd behave in a pub with their mates. I'm not sure if it's because those journalists are in 'work mode', sat in the corporate section with their colleagues, it's almost like they expect the pissed up blokes in the TRA to behave with a modicum of professionalism, and then act surprised when they hear some derogatory chants.

I'm amazed that you took this from the article. Would you give the same excuse if people were chanting from a racist or homophobic angle?

Obviously not, because racism and homophobia isn't tolerated when I'm at the pub with my mates, but calling your mate's mum a slag absolutely is.

You have some weird mates...

In my entire life not a single mate of mine has called my mum a slag...
I don't think it's that unusual, tbh. When I was growing up we used to chat shit about each others mums all the time. Still do on occasion. That said, that's with a group of friends I know incredibly well and have done since we were about 11. It's just a runner which we all know it's incredibly puerile now and that's part of the joke. I wouldn't scream it in public as part of a big crowd, mind.

Calling your mum a slag is straight up school year 8 tier, alongside, "Hah mate you're gay".

For grown men to shout that at another grown man is just a little bizarre for me.

I don't disagree! But I can also understand how it becomes a stupid runner that sticks among groups of people who grew up together.

Seriously? I'm guessing you're about 15 then?

Also do you not see the big difference in having 'banter' with your mates to chanting about someone you don't know at all?

The chants about Foden's mum are shameful and embarrassing. It's 2025 FFS!

I never understand why fans chant stuff like this. I'd much prefer to chant about our great history or chant some positive stuff about our own players, admittedly that is quite tough at the moment!

Oh come off it - are you telling me you don't revert to some juvenile behaviours amongst your oldest friends?

As for the bolded stuff...really?! I mean sure, I wouldn't be joining in some of the shite that gets changed at footie games (including the foden's mum shite because not only is it juvenile but it's also not particularly funny) but to say you don't understand why it happens is almost willful blindness to football fan culture. There's clearly a line but keep chipping away at it and you're left with shite American sports atmos "DEEE FENCE, DEEE FENCE, DEE FENCE" and cheerleaders holding up signs telling you when to cheer.

While I disagree that you will end up with that anyway, I don't understand why people would rather keep chants of a misogynistic, racist, homophobic etc. nature than having that.

I agree, I certainly wouldn't advocate for that kind of chanting and I certainly don't think anything gets lost in terms of the football culture by its absence. Like I say, I don't love the Foden chant at all, I just find it odd that people get pearl-clutchy about how strangers on the internet interact with their friends in the pub. It's rather different to 30,000 people chanting abuse at an individual.

Maybe, but how you chat in private can reflect how comfortable you are with some of those topics and in turn can influence how you or your friends may feel comfortable about voicing those opinions in public.

The example I used was going to the pub with my mates and you subsequently estimated that I was 15  as another poster said, many of us resort to juvenile jokes when we're with old pals.

I'm not saying the two scenarios are identical, however it is a similar environment when I go to the pub to when I go to at OT, as you're sat amongst your mates, having a laugh and occasionally some of you are not being totally PC. Yes, there is a difference in that there are footballers on the pitch who are the butt of the joke, however to act like those off-coloured chants inside a football stadium is 'reminiscent of the dark ages' does indicate that you're out of touch with crowd culture. Away days probably aren't for you either.

But presumably you've now as an adult met your mates mum's? You're surely not still calling them a slag?

I had met them then, as well. We still take the piss on that score, for sure, but more for nostalgia's sake then anything else.

Allegedly been struggling with IBS illness over the past year, which is what Darren Fletcher struggled with as well if I am not mistaken. Huge shame if it affects his career

Fletcher didn’t have IBS, he had ulcerative colitis, which is different because it damages the structure of the colon and needed surgery in his case.

He has obviously fulfilled his potential. Crazy how Greenwood was once considered an even bigger talent.

Ah, I was mistaken then. I am certainly not clued up enough on these things, but I do know people struggling with IBS and their stomach and I certainly wouldn't wish it on anyone

I don’t think he’s the only one at City who shit the bed this season.

Basically had the season off.

Now KDB is off, see if he can step up when the pressure is on.
