Phallon Tullis-Joyce | First USWNT call-up!

I’ll go with Phallon, methinks. Otherwise, what’s next? Phall Tull-Joy? Phallic Joys? Let’s stop it here before anyone butts in with inappropriate naming jokes.
Well, a series of posts earlier in this thread suggest that "Phallon" is not an effective solution to the teenage-toilet-humor problem -- but I'll admit that "Phall" probably isn't much better in this regard. How about "Phal" with only one "l," which looks a lot like the harmless name "Phil"? Or maybe it'll be best to stick with "PTJ" since she has too many damn names anyway.

Klingon?

According to FBREF.com, PTJ's save percentage (91.3) currently leads the league among keepers who have played at least 3 matches. Among those who have played the same number of matches (6) or more games, Hannah Hampton's 83.3 is next best (also in 6 matches). Pretty good company, huh?

Of course, there are several keepers who have played one more game than these two, so the comparison isn't exactly head-to-head, but I'd say PTJ looks like our team MVP -- at least until the offense shows up.

That's great. Really pleased for her. She deserves it, she's been playing well since the start of the season.

In retrospect, it's hard to imagine how she's managed to fly under USWNT's radar for so long.

Even if she doesn't get on the field this time around, this could be the opportunity she needs to have a shot in the future. Casey Murphy has been looking like the heir-apparent to Alyssa Naeher for the last couple of years, but PTJ could potentially have a say in that. If nothing else she'll benefit from spending some time around Naeher, as she did by spending a year around Mary Earps.

Gk coach Ian Willcock:
”Just like Mary, she (PTJ) gives 120% every single day, every single rep, no matter what it is, she'll just give it everything, she just wants to learn, and she'll really dig deep into the little bits.”
“Her mentality is a different class and her shot stopping is excellent. The way she covers the goal, and deals with crosses is superb. I’m over the moon with her.”

Regarding the scouting approach:
“We try to get to quite a lot of games whenever we can, we call them ‘live eyes’.

“So, you've got live eyes on what goes on. For me, someone is going to make a mistake at some point in the game. That's okay. It's how big an impact it has on the game. What happens to them after?

“There is lots of data. Everything we do is ‘statified’. But your eyes also don’t lie.

“I’d been watching Phallon for six months. When it was time to replace Baggers [Sophie Baggley] she was the first name I put forward and said this is who we should go for.”

The whole interview here. Good stuff about Earps, goalies becoming superstars and idols, gk coaching, social media etc.
