Watching a stream with Martin Tyler. He’s so much better.

I could argue for Drury in a single one off big game. But the weekly deluge of shite he trots out is maddening.
 
Should've stayed in America or wherever the hell he was before this season.
 
We thought Tyler was bad for his prepared soundbites, this guy is infinitely worse. He probably rehearses them with his wife at home.

Bit harsh to say he should have stayed in America when he never moved there for work. He works for NBC while remaining based in England.

Agreed. It’s the over hyping of every little minute detail which is great in a big moments highlight reel but in real time an absolute nightmare. Shit like this:

Just have to get this out there, because there are some people that genuinely think he's okay. Its all forced, rehearsed. Call the game as you see it.

He absolutely reeks.

You wanted Tyler out and this is what you have got.

I can’t believe people thought this guy was anywhere near Tyler or Tyldesly at their peak. The only positive thing I can say about him is that he is better than Fletch.
 
I think Sky likes to give their commentators the order of making it as soap opera and epic as possible with as many soundbites as possible, which is why Tyler seemed much better when he was not commentating for Sky.

So Drury with Sky influence ends up being a rich man’s Sam Matterface
 
It's '"Insert Name Here"'! ten times per game, for virtually every chance. Needs to cut that out.

He was fine when you only encountered a clip of him every 6 months doing his flowery prose.

Every week makes you want to put needles in your ears.

Yeah full on screaming today.

Then you see footage of him. Absolutely motionless. You'd think he'd be jumping around given how he sounds. Like you say, all rehearsed.
 
Martin Tyler was much better than Drury in his peak days. He dropped off quite a lot last few years because he was in his late 70s and I think struggled to put words, emotions and tone to what he was seeing.

But he caught the balance right 10-15 years ago, an authoritative voice without getting annoying.

The best commentators shouldn’t be noticeable imo, they’re like referees. The best one do their job you won’t notice most of the time. Drury is the Mike Dean of commentators. Listen to me and what I’m saying. Self indulgent crap a lot of the time.

On X (urgh), most see through his nonsense, but you still have the kids who think what he does is needed. I wonder when TalksSport and then media will start to pick up on him. Will have a two-week reprieve now, but he's back for our game vs Spurs...

EDIT: I think he does have a big (poetry) book, and I get that all commentators do -- but his is just flowery lines, not facts about teams/footballers.
 
Wow brutal comments here.

Ive seen his interview on this and he says he simply does this to make sure the viewer gets excited and has a feel of being in the ground as he wants them to feel listening to a commentary is interesting instead of the drab we usually get.

He was better 20 years ago when he was just starting out. Just loves his own voice too much now.

Single best commentator for a football game is John Helm. And Gray-Tyler combo.
 
He's awful, Rob Hawthorne and Bill Leslie should be Sky's main commentators, then draft in people like Ian Crocker, Iain Dark, Jim Proudfoot, David Stowell & Steve Bower when needed, they're alot better on the international feeds

I heard Tyler recently and he sounded lifeless but that's probably his age, he only started going downhill once Neville and Carragher showed up with there oooo's and shouting. Neville should be left up in the studio, Carragher is better when he's not around but they'll never hire the lesser name footballers who are much better on the international games for Sky's prime time viewing.
