Pepe | announces his retirement

He’s probably been the king atop the shithousery throne for the last 20 odd years.

Honourable mentions to:

His partner in crime Sergio Ramos
Diego Costa
Sergio Busquets
Dani Alves
Gabriel Paulista

I would absolutely love to see him in the Prem  one of those guys you loathe when against you but can’t help but love when they are on your team.

Edit: how could I forget Suarez?

Dani Alves really?

Dani Alves really?

Guess you’re forgetting the Alves of 08-12 ish where he was the biggest diving, whinging, fake card waving tosser going. Have seen him live vs Chelsea, Madrid in the CL and a few random La liga games and he’s pretty much got his mouth attached to the referee’s ear the whole game everytime. Incredible player, but absolute wind up merchant to the fullest.

I don't like him but woudn't put him on the same level as Pepe's, Ramos or Diego Costa, even if imo Pepe last seasons he is unfairly judged. Sure he still makes theatric moves but since Mourinho left Madrid he wasn't so agressive on the pitch. That crazy thing he did to the Getafe player was under Pellegrini tbf.

I know this thread is very old, but didn't wanted to create a new one just to say this. What a defensive performance today. 37 years old and he looked the same guy from Euro 2016, I know he never gets the credits because he sometimes wasn't clean, but honestly in the last 10 years there weren't many better players than him in the same position. At least from the defensive point of view.

Honestly you're gonna have a tough time convincing me of a better CB from his era. Hughly underrated

He was very good. I was actually impressed by both teams defensively a good mix of aggression and tactical nous.

Bit of an understatement. Can't think of any top defender this century that had a worse combination of violence and deception. Exceptional pure defender though. I think his contribution to Portugal's Euro win will have cemented his long-term status but it will always be begrudging and always downgraded because he was an absolute cnut on the field.

How did Brazil not cap him?
the guy has been a top CB for a long time. He was immense yesterday.

They didn't have the chance, he came to Portugal with like 16 years old or something and since very early he had decided he wanted to play for Portugal.

Yeah agree. Very good player, underrated and agree people view him differently for his antics but he's been a top level CB for a long time.

Seems ages ago that he partnered Ramos.

Fernando Santos' tactics protects our defenders really well which is why you'd struggle to find a bad performance from either Pepe, Ruben Dias or Jose Fonte since he started managing us. All of them make mistakes a lot more regularly at club level than in the national team.

Pepe's actually had long periods of bad form for Porto after some inujries and at Besiktas he wasn't that good but for the national team he looks like Maldini on steroids more often than not. For the past few months he's been in great form and he's looked like he's 27 rather than 37 though. Hopefully he can keep it up a few more years until we find a replacement in the national team.

Great defender, but I'm not sure at 35 he would represent a building brick for the future.

“Sometimes wasn’t clean” is an understatement

he produced some of the craziest things i ever saw on a football pitch

What happened to Danilo and William in the 2nd half vs France? They were gassed out

None of them can sustain 90 minutes of pressing, particularly William, difficult to handle the French midfielders characteristics, but in the first 45 minutes they were ok. I even dare to say it’s more difficult to predict how you can sustain Spain midfield than France. Well, at least you know you will have a midfield physical battle and at a certain point you will break out. Against Spain when they are on their mood you can run after the ball without knowing what will happen next. I suspect he will only use them against stronger opponents, sometimes Moutinho will mix there. I am not a big fan of Neves, at least on the NT, he looks stagnated at Wolves, William at Betis the same thing, even Danilo at Porto for me is nothing special. But in the NT together they all look better than individually at their clubs. I don’t like the type of football from Santos, but under him we’re more or less efective, regardless the opponents, on that I give him credit.

That video is so weird, proper psychopathic moments mixed with a few that are just so out of place. The first against Alves is just a hard tackle. No chance of getting the ball and the clearest yellow card I've ever seen, but he didn't go in dangerously. The one against Müller is literally nothing, never a red card or even a foul. Then you have him stamping on fingers and repeatedly kicking people in the back while down, or in the head while standing.

 i watched the video after I posted it and you are absolutely right, some of those “crazy moments” werent crazy at all, just regular stuff

I know it was supposed to start a new thread but feck me he was even better today than it was on that game in Paris.

Of course he doesn’t play always like this, his age is showing up on the Domestic League but sometimes he pulls legendary performances.

Deserves more than being remembered as a terrible character on the pitch ( even if he has done everything to deserve that fame).

Old school defender. Puts the De Ligts or Demirals of this world in the pocket for breakfast.

Let’s not even mention what he did against Cristiano or Morata.

One of the best CB of the last decade, happy for him, at 38 he could be so good, playing in an underdog club in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
He didn’t have a press as good as others who don’t even serve to clean his boots, but football today is more about marketing than performance.

That 56th minute goalline tackle was legendary defending. That was a goal I thought was bound to go in. Literally save his team from getting knocked out.

He was absolutely colossal. Crazy performance from him considering the huge amount of pressure on their defense after the red card for 60 or so minutes.

Class is permanent.

I guess the time for the world to forget you are one of the biggest thugs in world football is however long he's been out of the spotlights.

He was good, but I will never root for this cnut.

Has incredible ability to have his best performances in crucial games.

When he is focused there is no better centre back in the game.

Sergio Ramos vs Ajax level of performance

Still love him to bits

Still the pantomime villain but majestic last night. I love seeing ageing legends of the game have a game like that in the twilight of their careers. Pepe is a questionable legend but you know what I mean.

some of those 'fouls' in that vid were just great tackles. 'man and ball' thats what we were taught. or is it ball and man, it was a long time ago.

No way Ramos played like that vs Ajax
Yeah he did. Go watch it again. Had former greats here initaly (costacurta, maldini) calling it one of the best individual performances they'd ever seen from a CB even

Yeah he was magnificent. Makes his decision to get booked intentionally all the more baffling - given the evidence on the night did he really think a 2-0 win in the second leg was a bridge too far for Ajax?
