People's taste in music ?????

Number 1, NUMBER 1!?! Boy is my finger not on the pulse of todays chart music.

I swear Adele's album has been in the top 3 for the last 6 months.

Oh well, the Cowell powered music industry keeps trucking on it seems.

Does anyone other that kids actually buy singles anymore?

Bingo.

It's basically anyone not intelligent enough to download them illegally.

Hence why Cher Lloyd can top the charts.

I tend to buy things legally out of fairness to the artist who gets a cut of the proceeds. He/she has made me want to buy something because it's good, and hence they deserve some kind of monetary reward for it.

This is my reasoning, but I buy the physical copy just to look at/collect.

The charts have been shit for years. JLS were number 1 the other day. People are idiots.

Yeh, that's another element to it. There's something emotionless about downloads. Having something substantial in your possession is far more satisfying in my view.

I bet that's what you tell your bird.

They get a minute cut. Artists get the most money from their live shows which as many artists have stated, is the reason file sharing has been a good thing. Despite the fact record labels benefit from record sales, they also monitor file sharing and see which of their bands have enough interest for a successful tour.

It's why so many old bands have reformed and toured.

I didn't know that. Interesting stuff.

Also why there are so many shite tributes from the Klunks to Lady GoGo treading the boards.

Because the people who play in those bands haven't the talent to make their own music.

Don't look at the charts unless you're working on some kind of misanthropic and eschatological essay, or is generally tired of life and need that final push...

And Pexbo is right about royalties.

I used to always check the uk charts then got disinterested .... too many songs on it I couldn't relate to, these days I only look at the billboard hot 100.

"Beyonces "single ladies" is a generation defining song" - Boss, 2011.

To be fair, Beyonce is one of the few pop acts that deserves to be topping the charts.

As for Cher Lloyd, she has a huge young following that seems to hang on her every word and will probably buy about 5 copies each just to get it to number one. Have a look on her Twitter for further proof. Similar with JLS etc. plus the fact their songs are catchy (do not read: good) thanks to the production rather than themselves as well as overplayed on the radio/in clubs and it's no surprise.

correct me if I am wrong. how many sales does it take to get to number 1.

Surely less people buy cds these days. Think about the record sales in the 60s and 70s. Heck they recycle the recordings from those days and it Still sells.

No one buys singles on CD anymore, it's all downloads.

The music is always evolving, what seems like junk to us now can be the mainstream 10 years from now, even less.

Imagine yourself in the 60's and listening to rap, you'd gonna start thinking the singer is possessed and probably hang them on a tree

Perhaps we're getting old, there are reasons why my dad can never appreciate current music, no matter what. And there's a reason no matter how much I tried I can't never fully appreciate the music of his generation

Why? Because she's fit?

After seeing her Glasto performance no, it was astounding as far as entertainment value goes. The woman has talent and a huge stage presence. Her music might not be everyone's taste and at the end of the day it's still just poppy RnB but the cream of the crop IMO.

I'm not saying I'm a massive fan or anything but you can't discredit every performer because it's not what you're into.

Feel free to discredit Cher Lloyd, however.

You just aren't downloading enough. A 200gb harddrive full of music is a substantial item in your posession.

I agree with that, though I think music tends to be overpriced.

I was there watching it and it was mind numbing.

Every single song was either about his strong she is because she's a woman or how us men are such bad people.

It was a big show with lots of lights and fireworks but as for talent and music i saw about 30 acts that were better than her that weekend.

Without the fireworks, backing dancers, light show and multiple big screens, Crystal Fighters had twice the energy she had, all played an instrument and had their crowd eating out of their hand. That's just one example, I'm typing on my iPhone now so CBA to give a list of who and why they were better than Beyonce but it would be pointless anyway. Because it's "Beyonce".

No. Cher Lloyd is shit.

I wasn't comparing her to your favourite bands etc. Personally I'd rather go and see Jamie Jones, Maya Jayne Coles or any other DJ any day. I simply meant as far as pop acts go she's up there IMO.

I'm not comparing her to my favourite bands either.

I was with a group of six of my girlfriends friends, so you can imagine the shite I had to put up with.

I saw Shakira last year at Glastonbury and again, I have no interest in her music but she was excellent, she didn't need to dress up, she didnt need a crew to arrange fireworks for her or a lighting system, nor did she need a director to sort out a bunch of videos to be played behind her. She just came out in some pretty casual clothing and really built a rapport with the crowd, sang her songs and looked like she was having the time of her life.

None of this "oh I'm so overwhelmed to be playing at glastonberries, gosh let me take it in a minute" bullshit.

Again, Florence last year, not my kind of gig, but if anyone should go to anyone for lessons on how to fill a stage with personality it's her.

Imogen Heap, last year, no gimmicks, just a musician on stage having the time of her life and getting the crowd involved.

Looking at what Beyonce did, not her lighting team, her backing dancers, her video directors, Beyonce, was completely average and underwhelming.

EDIT - Average and underwhelming is a bit hard, her voice was very good and obviously her dancing was also very good, but I really didn't think any better than anything else I had seen.

Every. Rap concert. Ever.

That's a musical genre that fails on stage. Sounds really bad because rappers actually have to use their voice without technical help. It would be better if they mimed it.

Well that's a shit generalization but do carry on

Not in my opinion no. Seen Snoop and 50 Cent. It's quite awful live because these guys aren't singers. You don't here a live version of a rap song that's better than the regular version. You also don't get live albums from them.

Might be different in small venues, like max 1000 people.

I've only seen Beastie Boys on video and their live performances are much much better than what I've mentioned.

It just doesn't work. You have to have the music and the beat at a certain volume. The rappers can't really rap and have to kind of shout their lyrics. Not as good. Doesn't get any better when they try and sing the vocals.

It's just a comparison to what Pexbo was saying. He's not a fan of general pop music but enjoyed Shakira whilst not Beyonce, despite her great vocal talent. Same with me and rap. I can't really enjoy myself because I'm not a real fan of all these artists. Their music is designed to be heard in clubs. It's not good live.
If you're fan you probably won't care. Just seeing them live would matter to you.

That's a bit ridiculous.
