I think that it is quite clear that Van Gaal is correct in his assessment that our forward line lacks pace and creativity.

I can only imagine the arrival of Pedro will see him as almost a first name on the team sheet because of this. Who is going to lose out though?

The forward line today looked imbalanced. Ashley Young was the only one of the three behind Rooney in a natural position. Mata often looks too weak and slow out wide and Memphis does not strike me as a number 10 in skill set at all.

I am hoping that Pedro's arrival will see

Depay---------Rooney---------Pedro
----------------Mata---------------

I fear that Van Gaal has a great deal of fondness for Young and will opt for

Young--------Rooney---------Pedro
-------------Memphis-------------

Depay---------Kane---------Pedro
----------------Rooney---------------

Memphis ---- Rooney ---- Pedro
--------------- Mata

Would do it for me. Though I definitely wouldn't be surprised if it's Fellaini behind the striker, I bet Fellaini's suspension is the reason why Memphis is behind the striker at the moment.

I actually forgot all about Fellani!

Hitting him with those long balls in between the lines was a fantastic tactic for us last season.

Memphis I think will still partner Rooney (play in behind him) for the most part, and I think he's got huge potnetial there. Pedro for the most part I think will play on the left ahead of Young though. Hopefully they all rotate though and they're not static in their positions on the pitch. The important thing is to take a bit of risks on the ball though going forward and try and make things happen, instead of being content with keeping possession all the time. Not only did we need more pace in our players, but we need more pace in our passing play. Schweinsteiger, Carrick, Herrera can all add to that and do it better then what we saw today.

Are you a fan of Mata on the right? I would really like to see some power and pace in the wide positions. Pedro is actually right footed although ambidextrous and uses his left possibly more so I think that LVG could use him on either side but hasn't he been more effective for Barca on the left?

Based on how he likes Memphis central, I think it'll be

------------Rooney-----------
Pedro-----Memphis-----Mata

Yep, that's what we'll see I'm afraid. He can't seem to see that Memphis is a winger, nor that Mata is not. It's very weird and will cause us lots of problems in attack.

I'd like

Memphis------Rooney------Pedro
---Fellaini---Morgan---Mata---
Shaw---Rojo---Smalling---Darmian
-------------Romero--------

Backup team

Young------Wilson------Januzaj
---Carrick---Bastian---Hererra---
Blind---Evans---Jones---Valencia

I would like him more in the middle, but I'm just saying how I think we'd line up with Van Gaal in charge. Van Gaal likes his #10 to be strong, quick, and be creative and a goalscorer. Memphis has done it really well so far I think, when he gets the ball that is. Mata ranges from ineffective to world class out wide though. Him and Darmian need to get a good understanding going for him to be better, and he needs to roam inwards more then he did today IMO.

Obviously it would be better for us to have a player with more pace and strength out wide, but Mata is a class player in a different way so I'd prefer having him in the team as he almost always picks out the right option on the ball and keeps it so well.

Pedro imo should not be playing on the wing.

Dont think he would enjoy the same kind of space near/edge of the penalty box as he did at barca (as defenders were sucked into the middle because of Messi and co.)

he would be better off playing in front of rooney as a striker, running the channels and stretching the defence. To me we should use him as we would use Chicharito or would have used David Villa had we signed him. He has great ball control and a very good first touch. his finishing is on par with the best. I think a forward who plays off the shoulder of the last man is his best position.

I think this would help keep CBs pinned back providing more space for memphis rooney and mata to function b/w the defence and midfield.

Depay is our best LW so he should play LW. Pedro would be our best RW so he should play RW. Mata is our best #10 so he should play #10. Rooney is our best CF so he should play CF.

There really shouldn't be much to debate. Yet that almost certainly won't be what we go with.

I don't care which positions, but if Pedro, Memphis & Herrera all play, I will feel pretty happy with our attack.

If 4-2-3-1:

-----------------Rooney----------------
Memphis--------Mata-------------Pedro
------------------------------------------
-----------Carrick----Bastian-----------

----------------Rooney------------------

Aye, that is what we should look at.

We have to look at Pedros strengths and then incorporate him into our system. Pedro doesnt have the ability to play as a winger. IMO hes not a player you want 1v1 vs a PL defender.

Hes a forward. Maybe he can start on the wing but in possession he can drift in field into the position of a forward. Doesnt make sense to play him as a conventional RW imo

-------------------Pedro----------------

----Memphis-----Rooney-------Mata

Pedro will play on the right and Mata will end up on the bench.
We will sooner see Fellaini / Herrera / Memphis in the hole than Mata.

Which is really odd to say the least. He's perfect in the hole. Playing Memphis there and Mata on the wing makes absolutely no sense to me, but I know LvG likes to tamper with players and their positions. He did so with Schweinsteiger and it worked out well for him, but it's really weird. Just play Memphis on the wing and Mata in the hole. Would work much better for us I'm sure.

Expect:

Young - Memphis - Pedro

Would like:

Memphis - Herrera - Pedro

Hernandez

Depay.............Mata.............Pedro

Schneiderlin.......Herrera

I don't care, bite me

This is the winning ingredient for me.

I don't think we can predict this because LvG will not stay with a static player set up. He will swap situationally as needed depending on different variables like opposition, injuries etc. I fully expect Fellaini to get a lot of minutes this year, as when used properly, he's a tremendous weapon.

Van Gaal has got him for Right wing back so we can go back to 3-5-2.

---------------------rooney/hernandez--------------------
memphis/young------mata/herrera--------pedro/januzaj
------fellaini/schneiderlin------carrick/schweinsteiger----

I think Pedro will just replace Young on the left to begin with, then form will dictate things from there.

Actually I like that. I hope we try it some matches.

Thanks, in my opinion I think it will work.
Schneiderlin would be able to screen the defence and handle the midfield on his own if Herrera was caught out of position
Herrera would play as the box to box CM moving the ball out from midfield, also has a eye for goal.
Mata is a top goalscorer and putting him behind the striker makes sense, also his link up with Herrera would help to control the midfield and his eye for a pass into space would bring the forwards active.
Memphis and Pedro are players who have pace and will look for space behind the FBs and are goalscorers. What we need from wide players.
Hernandez would provide what we've been lacking up front, pace and movement in behind the CBs.
I've not included big names here because the system and the execution of it is more important and better suited to the attributes of these players. Just my opinion. It's worth a shot and I hope it tried more than once.

So much pace. And then Mata in the middle of the circle conducting like it was an orchestra!

Di Maria offered more then Pedro but sat on the bench (I know he was shit for us but still), I just don't see this signing going ahead as it not the way our business has been conducted since LVG has come in.

If we do sign him then Young has to be dropped, I know he did well last season but as LVG put it "his no Neymar" so for me he lacks quality to be a Manchester United winger, he hasn't got many tricks up his sleeve and lacks goals and assists.

Memphis Rooney Pedro
....Morgan Herrera
...........Carrick

Get this team playing it will give us the balance LVG talks about but never walks the walk...

Ridiculous. By him and use him as wing back? Which in turn will drop our best signing (so far) to the bench. Aye ok.
