Paul Pogba v Frenkie De Jong (not the title m1tch wanted to see)

FDJ is the eggs to bind a team together and set the tempo. PP is the cherry on top of a very well made cake!

There hasn’t been many players in history more talented than Pogba all round but unfortunately he’s lacking some of the basic things a modern footballer needs. Mainly get it out of his feet fast enough as he’s quite tall which doesn’t help him in that when pressed.

De Jong I hope will fit us better and allow us to keep possession more. In the 90’s and 00’s though Pogba would have been exceptional I assume given the game was slower back then.

How many years will need to pass before we can stop talking about Pogba?

An eye opener for some….DeJong is a class class act….but he won’t fix Manchester United.

Where as Paul Pogba wasn't a class anything other than dabbing and dancing and definitely didn't fix United.

So you think he was class at dabbing and dancing? I for one didn't much like that part. At least he had his fans for those things I guess.

Unpopular opinion: A midfield of De Jong, Pogba and Fred would have been interesting. Probably more so than De Jong, Fred and Bruno. Nothing, against Bruno, I just like true ball players.
Either way, very excited to have De Jong join the team.

On paper, that wouldn't be too dissimilar to the midfield Pogba played in at Juventus with Pirlo as the deep-lying playmaker and Vidal/Marchisio as the box to box midfielder.

He'll be the cornerstone of that fix because of the manager.

Pogba would've had a much better time if Allegri followed him over.

Never seen a player as overhyped and shit as Pogba. FdJ all day.

Paul de Jong and Frenkie Pogba would be equally nice names.
Paul de Frenkie. Frenkie de Pogba.

Hoping so….have high hopes of ETH and De Jong is a wonderful player.

On quality, Pogba without a doubt.

On what he can achieve for us, De Jong has every chance of being better.

We actually have to sign him first though.

He never seemed to learn to play to his skillset. Always seemed like he played to be the player he wished he was rather than what he could/should have been, and certainly not what was best for the team. Remember that very long period where he constantly held on to the ball for too long? Trying to waltz through the entire opposition midfield, not passing when he should...I'm convinced he thought of himself as some untouchable midfielder that could keep the ball as long as he wants, where players just fall to his wayside and he has all the time in the world to decide what to do with it. The reality was pretty different - either being tackled or missing the right opportunity to pass.
That very long period being the entire time he was at United? He never moved past that

I’ve not seen too much of FDJ to know his skillset however he cannot be worse than Pogba.

De Jong!

Pogba is more talented but Frenkie is the better footballer.

Pogba is amazing but he over complicates football so much.
Pogba is more talented at what? Because if he's the inferior footballer, it can't be football.

I think people need to separate the sport from the tricks.

Same.

The thing that made Scholes and Xavi the best midfielders of the last 30 years was that they were soooo good at the basics that they never made any mistakes when doing them. Because they were capable of 120% of what a mere mortal footballer could manage, it was no sweat for them to achieve 100% perfection in nearly every game. That level of consistency could only come from complete mastery of their craft.

If Xavi is a fan of FdJ, I assume he's cut from the same cloth. Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing for myself.

Pogba is absolutely more capable of magic out of the two.. but he just doesn’t show it enough on a consistent basis.

Pogba’s ceiling is higher but Frenkie’s floor is much higher.

Pogba isn't a maestro while De Jong is. Ideally you have both someone like Pogba, a game breaker and someone like De Jong who is a game controller.

Pogba was never supported here; if De Jong comes and is not facilitated via an able partner and cohesive midfield, his fate won't be much better.

In terms of talent, it's clearly Pogba. In terms of intelligence and reading of the game, it's clearly De Jong. Both optimised, it's Pogba, who doesn't even have to break stride to turn a game.

What magic? Honestly, what magic did he produce for Man Utd over 6 seasons? He has a wonderful long pass on him on transition, otherwise, what?

Tchouameni is the player Real Madrid chose even when they could get Pogba for free @charlenefan ....

I have seen that several times and it makes no sense to me. Tchouaméni and Pogba aren't a substitute for each other, they do not have the same skill set and they aren't at the same stage of their careers. Real Madrid aren't after 30 years old players, they are trying to build the core of their next generation while their current veterans still have gas in the tank.

Nothing about him tonight looks better than Pogba. Not even his workrate.

Still want us to sign him though

So are these guys.

But they play a different game that just happens to use the same sporting apparatus.

It's not consistency that's Pogba's problem. It's that, on the spectrum from footballer to freestyler, he's not close enough to the footballer end.

Talented footballers can do it consistently precisely because they're masters of their craft - that craft being a sport rather than a set of tricks.

That to me is a wild take, that's where I truly question people opinion.

Just those balls over the top, when he gets himself in those half spaces on the left and stands a player up he can be unplayable. I remember one pass when he hit a 60 yard ball on the half volley perfectly weighted for Rashford(?) over the top.. was just speechless. It’s not the only example but it’s one that certainly sticks in my mind.

Not in anyway am I saying he was good enough for us, of course he wasn’t, but he certainly had his moments of magic.

He is doing absolutely nothing today in truth.

Like we should have with Pogba we will need to put a second top Midfielder beside this guy

A midfield 3 of De Jong, Van de Beek and Schone got the CL semifinal in 2018/9, knocking out Real Madrid and Juventus along the way.

We already know that VdB isn't a top midfielder. And neither, frankly, was Schone. So FdJ has proven he can elevate those around him rather than needing a supporting cast to elevate him.

I'd expect FdJ to be able to take midfield by the scruff of the neck, the same way Bruno was able to with the attack.
