City were not in for Shaw, Martial or Pogba (if you get him) when you signed them. No one else was in for Martial when you signed him. No one else is in for Pogba right now. van Persie and Berbatov occurred when Ferguson was still managing you.

Well if being priced out means you aren't in then technically that's correct. It's a nice way of dealing with it for those who don't get their man.

It's possible that Jones may be ahead of Bailly in the pecking order BUT I trust Phil 'Red Zone' Jones to not be able to play more than a few minutes per season.
When Jose realises that Jones hardly ever plays, he'll be moved down the pecking order and his contract will be allowed to expire.

So, assuming Pogba is 'done', are we expecting any more arrivals? Is there even a need?

I think Jones has fallen down the pecking order both because of his performance and his injury record. I seriously doubt Mourinho would've bought Bailey if he thought Smalling and Jones, alongside the likes of CBJ would've been sufficient.

Few people on Twitter saying we're close to reaching agreement with Raiola.

City with their superior everything only managed to nick 4th place off us through goal difference. And we relied heavily on our teenage strikers who were both on their debut season.

I am getting drawn into an off topic debate. So I will reply only once regarding this.

MCFC did have superior "everything".
They were doing well in the league. They went far into the CL. They won the League Cup.
Once Pep was announced, I have no idea what happened, but their form nose dived and they lost ground in the league.
Even though they performed so badly in the 2nd half of the season, they still finished ahead of us.

IMO we finished the season with a worse squad than MCFC. Jose has come in and has immediately rectified this, by buying players in their prime or about to hit their prime.
I certainly don't feel sorry for MCFC. Over the last 3 seasons, they have the best average finishing position, of any team in the EPL (1st, 2nd, 4th).

So we can say when Real Madrid signed Ronaldo they beat every other team in world football to his signature seen as every team would have wanted him? The original post referred to 'real competition'. I would not call it 'real competition' if only one team is willing to meet the selling club's valuation.

@sunama gotcha. Jose definitely made a huge difference, and is also one of the reasons why I'm so confident about this 'saga' than the previous ones. He gets things done.

Who do you think we beat when we originally signed Ronaldo?..The same teams that you say beat everyone....It's swings and round abouts. The Spanish clubs wanted him and others but ultimately we got him. If we had more sun, we might have been able to keep him but it weren't to be.

Let's get back to Pogba!

A lot of posters still seem confused on the 'Raiola fee'. His fee is so 'large' because when Pogba signed on a free for Juve a clause was inserted into the contract which sees Raiola entitled to 20% of any future transfer fee (That's pretty standard in contracts when players are signed on a free, especially if the signing on bonus is low). It's now that time and if we're paying Juve €120m then Raiola is due €24m from Juve not United. However, Juve being the scaly and shrewd negotiators they are, are trying to get United to up their offer so that Raiola's cut doesn't come out of their portion. Which is why Mino posted that tweet earlier today about the deal not being done yet. Juve and United have agreed on what Juve will receive. The only issue left is who pays Mino his cut.

Agree though I thought United and Juve split the agent fee. In any case, Juve are trying to worm their way out of this like you say. I reckon we should just bite the bullet and pay up (which is probably what we'll end up doing...well, at least most of the agent fee). The chances of us having to deal with penny pinching vermin like Juve any time soon is slim. The chances of us having to pay an agent 20% of a fee any time soon is also slim.

With Pjaca now signed and official Juve can now concentrate on Pogba, which is why I think there have been a lack of updates today.

I assume the process can now speed up.

Thread has grown by 60 pages since I was on last night but can't see that anything has actually happened?

Starting to feel less confident of this deal getting done !! I feel we are gonna be left standing at the alter, again !! :annoyed:
When will we learn??

All gone very quiet...the calm before the storm?

I'm calling it:
It's the same trend every day to be fair. It gets towards the evening when the articles for the following days papers are being released and lots of "news" suddenly starts popping up.

It'll happen this evening too, around 8pm BST the continental journalists will start tweeting hints about what their articles will be about and the British journalists will be busy trying to decipher what is happening and pumping out their own articles which will start to appear an hour later.

I think most opposition fans fails to recognize the amount of scarring the Moyes and LvG years has left on us. I think that most UTD supporters now will take success no matter in which form. Also this is very much getting in with the times, the sugardaddies, Sheiks and Oligarchs has sortof redefined what it takes to succeed.

Makes sense...

I was more referencing to some of the arrogant posters who is posting as if it's United right to get any player and angry at Juve for delaying, etc. I have no problems with United as a club. It just ignorant fan base which I guess every club has.

I'm pretty sure Spurs, Chelsea and Barcelona made attempts to sign Martial in the same window we signed him.

I think Arsenal were in for Schneiderlin too last summer before we signed him.

You are right. And instead of blaming Juve we should actually learn from them how to sell players for good money as this is something we have been extremely bad at for decades.

Chelsea wanted martial, its why we acted when we did

Chelsea wanted Shaw as well. Barcelona were after Bailly before we stepped in.

It sounds like it's more to do with Raiola's fee than either club actually stalling the deal out, it looks like we've agreed to pay the fee for Pogba but the issue is just how/who pays Raiola's fee, which probably will have been resolved by the time we hear from Di Marzio later on (usually about 10pm).

Last season, MCFC had the best squad. When RvN was interviewed he stated this repeatedly and nobody argued against that.
I am not quite sure how you have managed to conclude that MCFC's squad is bad.
MCFC had a much better set up (players, manager, system, league position, etc) than us and arguably the best in the league.

Only after we got Jose, has our squad improved. But that is expected when you buy a Galactico class manager.
While LVG was here, we were playing guys like Lingard. Attackers who were unable to score/create goals. We even brought in an 18 year old, who did a better job than most of our attackers.
While Moyes was here, we were buying players like Fellaini (for more than his release clause). After buying Mata, people were celebrating like we'd just bought the reigning Ball on dor. At the time I think we were 5th. We proceeded to drop further.

Lets face it, pre-Jose: a time to forget.

Never mentioned United's squad.

City had a better squad when Fergie left and have spent more money than we have since and they still were very average in central defence and midfield. They've spent a lot of money in both departments and have nothing close to a world class player in those positions from those buys.

Chelsea wanted Shaw as well. Barcelona were after Bailly before we stepped in.
I heard rumours about Umtiti not being their first choice but wasn't sure how true it was, good to hear we acted fast in that case.

Yes but wouldn't you call that an underachievement? Chelsea finished 10th. What shall we make of their squad?

That's the way it is. Bayern, who get good deals generally paid €40m on Sanches who essentially had one whole season with benefica. Pogba has played 4 full seasons, a World Cup and a euro.

We have the money. If we need any player we should go for them. Unless the money is used for fans it's of no use to you and me. I prefer spending it on quality players rather than penny pinching like Wenger
There was many nights during the Vidal days where every outlet in Italy and Chile was reporting it but it just never went tbat step further to BBC/SSN. Then, it would get denied by agents and people who are actually reliable. The same is happening here. Although I think this will happen, I don't like the Vidal vibes.
No need to worry. The primary reason Vidal didn't happen is Van Gaal's concerns with his knee injury at the time (at least that's what I remember being reported). Had he been fully fit, I'm confident that transfer would've happened. Pogba in this case is fully healthy.

I've question, do you folks think that if and when we sign Poggers, after 18 months he sign a contract extension and Real will simply be priced out by virtue of his fee and wages. I know it's wishful thinking, but isn't that plausible?

I dont know mate but i agree with you though, they had all the advantages over us and almost even signed Pogba. Made me sick when he was linked with them for the past two seasons as i knew we didnt have a chance back then.

It would be a case of Pogba himself wanting to leave IMO, he will let us know and then we will work out a deal that suits us just like we did with Ronnie. The difference is that the fee would be so huge that I think it might be more plausible for them to include a top player or two. Bottom line is that we'll be fine, he'll be super motivated if he signs with us and will help us win trophies again.

I was under the impression that pizza boy owned a % of Pogba, hence the fee as the PL does not allow 3rd party ownership.
