Footballers without meniscus are damaged and can't train properly. For someone like you such operation is minor because you likely don't have to put too much stress on your joints but it's not the case for athletes.
I can only tell you what my consultant told me and he is a knee specialist. To save constant knee problems, they remove the meniscus.
Long term, living without a meniscus can cause problems with arthritis and you may need to have your knee replaced, but, they figure, it's a short career, you can manage a few years without it. Worry about the long term effects after you retire.
