Let's ignore that he assisted 2 of our 3 goals. Let's ignore that the third goal was 100% down to his brilliance in getting rid of Koscielny.

as I said I'm not knocking it but the original poster was saying he'd like to see him dominate a big team like he did with Everton in 2nd half. He didn't do that in that game was my point. Arsenal defensively were v suspect in all our goals but kudos to Pogba. We should have lost that game and his red card certainly didn't help. I don't think you could say he ran the midfield in that game. David De Gea was MOM in that game, that tells you everything you need to know about that game.

First, since when a single midfielder is supposed to dominate a whole big team ?

Second, It was clear we were playing on soaking pressure and countering in this game, we didn't aim to keep possession to blame him for his.

Third, red card was really not something that important to look to in such game. Fact is Pogba created 2 of our 3 goals in this game, and I can't find any single player in our team that could have assisted the third goal other than Pogba. He was the most important part of our counter attacks in this game.

Finally, I find the whole "Pogba not performing in big games" is exaggerating. Last season he played poorly against Chelsea away and Liverpool home, but he was very good against Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs home, against Liverpool away he created our best chance of the game for Zlatan. He didn't play against City, Arsenal or Spurs away.

This season he played only one big game of the 5 we played till now and he created 2 of our 3 goals in such game.

You make it sound like great players have to be great all the time. That's a very modern expectation but it isn't remotely grounded in reality. Here's Zidane arguably at at his peak as an individual, months before his sublime Euro 2000 performances - up there with the greatest individual tournament in international history - against Lazio.

He gives the ball away with his first pass, falls over a few times, mishits a few shots and loses the ball a few times more. 2 out of 4 shots on target, 5/9 dribbles completed, 34/44 passes landed; 0 goals, 0 assists. Mixed in with that you have some moments of sheer brilliance and some moments of simple play. That's a very typical Zidane performance in a game like that.

It's important to set the context here: this Juve team ended up finishing 7th the season prior, while they were facing a Lazio team that finished 2nd and 1st between 98-00. So it wasn't an easy game - it wasn't compable to Everton. However it's worth bearing in mind that Juve did finish 7th with Zidane, and at that point Zidane was undeniably a great player. Here's a very ordinary performance from Zidane in that very ordinary season.

What the game against Lazio does is highlight is how silly the idea is that Pogba being unable to drag us into the top 4 last season demonstrates his failings compared to his peers. Likewise for the idea that failing to shine in a tight game disqualifies him from being in the elite. Neither of these standards match up to his most apparent comparison, and Zidane is considered by many as one of the very best in history.

If you wanted a direct comparison to Everton, you can look at his game against Bari in the same season. Bari were just outside the relegation zone and Juve finished 2nd. No goals, no assists, plenty of mistakes, plenty of brilliance. That's not to say Zidane didn't have immaculate performances against the weaker teams, or sparkling performances against the elite...but he certainly didn't all the time. He didn't even do it most of the time. No player ever has.

Many of Pogba's great performances this season are comparable to many of Zidane's in 2000. Similarly many of his ordinary performances are comparable to many of Zidane's in 2000. The difference is Zidane's average performances dwindle in the memory and disappear from the stories and eventually, the image we've created is almost entirely fictional. That's what you're expecting Pogba to be. A player that has only ever existed in your imagination.
This is a great post. It does seem true to me that great players become even greater players in the mind as time goes by.

A wonderful player. Imagine how well he'd do with someone like Naingollan in place of Herrera

Fantastic post.

@Brwned: excellent post.

I used to watch a lot of Serie A during that time since it was shown on a channel here for free. The Messi and Ronaldo standard is just that, and impossible expectations follow. Pogba is an elite player, simply watch him play over the course of a season and it should be very clear.

Pogba is such a classy player. I love watching him play. Flicks and tricks galore. His highlight reel at the end of his career is going to be something.

Do you remember how Zidane was at 24?? Not even half the player he was at 29/30... Pogba has plenty of time to develop... he is world class.
There's this assumption that a player will continue to improve as time goes on, he's no better today than he was 3 years ago. The only big changes that will happen is if our team improves due to better coaching or different tactics. He's world class and one of the best players in the league. However being a world class player and being compared to a generational player are two different things.

He absolutely is.

Im just going to leave this here

"There's an awful lot of hype merchants in the media and in the game saying that Pogba is an outstanding, but I agree with everything that Scholes has said," Dunphy said on RTE 2fm's Game On.

"Paul Scholes is well qualified as a commentator, he was a great player. He calls things as he sees it and we should be grateful for that.

"This 'magician' called Pogba, well, he never turns up. A price tag of £90m, well that's ridiculous. Pogba is not good enough. No matter what system Paul Pogba plays in, he is not a top player. United would be better off without him.

"He's okay, if you paid £20 million, you'd think you'd be getting a good deal.

"He's on the fringes of games, he hits these long 40-yard balls that are like lasers but they look better than they are.
"He doesn't really have a football brain. When I look at games, I know where Pogba should be. Most of the guys writing about Pogba don't have the knowledge to know what he should be doing.

He’s such a cnut  Remember his rant about Ronaldo?

I really fail to understand why so many people in the media have problems with Pogba ?

Young man that loves social media, has a big personality, flair player. Some people don't like that and want footballers to be shite on a stick people. Lingard is also disliked for his personality and off field antics.

Worst rant I have read in my life.

Its not even the bit about Pogba that stands out to me, it's his insistence that he's the one who knows how Pogba should play.
He has the football brain, nobody else.

In a world where Donald Trump is president Dunphy's ability to stand out as particularly stupid is remarkable.

To be fair, Lingard is a terrible dancer, and should be fined by the team every time he busts a move in celebration! :)

What a player he was for us. I don't think he has reached his Juve level yet. But by the time he gets there , you will see what a beast he is. He just needs to not to be the main man in the middle. Manchester need a player like Pjanic or Marchisio to do the passing work and let Pogba takes care of final third.

I think he's gotten better as a player but I'd agree he had more memorable games in a Juv shirt but that's down to him playing in his best position week in week out.

If we continue to play him on the left side of a 3 man midfield id expect the Everton performance week in week out.

Hard for him to show how good of an attacker and creator he is when he's back in our half picking up the ball as a CDM.

uhhh what? so he hits a 40 yard pass with laser-like precision, but don't fall for that because it's smoke and mirrors  ffs

Everybody knows Pogba's a player, people like that old jealous fart you can't take seriously. Jamie Carragher was raving about him, and he seems the most sensible pundit going right now. He genuinely does call things cleanly.

didn't Arsenal dominate midfield in that game though and he got sent off. Great win and I'm not knocking it, but possession in that game was something like 80 to 20%
Yes, Pogba is obviously the reason Arsenal had 80% possession. It would have been 100% possession in our favour if Pogba did keep the ball at feet for 90mins without the other 21 players on the pitch touching it.

How can you be a top player without being capable of being the main man? Pogba has improved significantly since learning how to take responsibility and control a game in England.

Dunphy is a contrarian character - A literal character. He doesn't analyze football, just says whatever will provoke reaction and interest. I can enjoy him as entertainment but he's never to be taken seriously, whether you agree or not.

Scholes and Sounness are just trying to build the same Alan Hansen-like negativity towards anything that looks a bit different and use hyperbole to ensure they're the most highlighted opinion. It's awful analysis but has proven to be a decent career move through the decades. Why else would Chris Sutton ever be on TV?

Scholes' criticism was utterly ridiculous. He can't even make up his mind at times. He's before said that he needs to keep it simple more and now he looks like he's not even trying to impact games? Make up your mind son. Pogba, if nothing else, always tries to impact the game and more often than not does. He's having an outstanding campaign and the "big game" criticism is absurd when he was the best outfield player in the only one he's played this season.

It was an opportunistic swipe at Pogba's lowest point in a long while - brief as it was. Criticising his energy levels at a point where everyone is exhausted was another bit of absurdity.

Sounness' bias is obvious but Scholes also doesn't like Mourinho, he was on the Giggs train for obvious reasons. He will relish sticking the boot in wherever possible. I'm genuinely amazed the sympathy he's getting from our own fans when he's throwing our best performer this season under the bus. Pogba has been the least of our problems - The man hasn't lost a league game in well over a year. Outrageous commentary should be met with outrage.

Great player. Club legend. As a pundit though - Mourinho couldn't have called it any better.

literally said nothing wrong. Throwing under a bus? thats a bit much. He gave constructive feedback. People are so soft nowadays. Pogba isn't a Pirlo, Modric or Kross. To get the best out of him, he suggested we sign one of those players and give Paul less responsibility. Scholes has been saying we should sign a Kroos from day one. Literally last season he was saying we need a world class CM to get the best out of Pogba so he has stuck to his guns

He was a lower league slogger. There are probably better players on the caf...

I agree with Dunphy. If this braindead clown Paul Pogba can be an elite level footballer then I still have a chance.

Nothing wrong? He suggested he wasn't trying - Probably the worst insult you can give to a professional footballer and an accusation that's totally baseless. How Pogba is getting singled out to begin with given his production and displays to this point is beyond reason in itself. He's not above criticism but to go the same tired line about his price tag and suggest that he of all people isn't doing enough for us is ridiculous. He's been outstanding.
