Paul Merson Pundit Thread

Time wasting would get to insane level just to tick the clock during sin bin time, even if it's readded with stoppage time. Refs sin bin multiple players from the same team for these cynical time wasting tactic? That's quick way to destroying football game.

Next they would need to introduce stopwatch. Next ad between break...
It's situational, would time wasting benefit the team? You'd get long stoppages as you said.

I don't think the problem is with the sin bin itself but rather the application of it. Refs can't be trusted to administer punishment fairly.

what if a goalkeeper gets sin binned? 10 mins of shooting at an open net?
Same as when a keeper gets sent off!

Isn't that different or difficult to comprehend I wouldn't have thought.

if a keeper gets sent off you usually sub a player off for another keeper. Not gonna do that for 10 mins and then have 2 keepers on the pitch are ya.

No, you'd play an outfield player in goal for the 10 mins, not hard to comprehend really?

Brilliant, it’s a daft idea. Never gonna happen
It's not a daft idea though, it's a great idea and it works well in football further down the pyramid, so there's proof that it does work.

I think this has a real chance of being implemented,

If red cards didn't exist I think people would have the same objections to them as they do orange cards.

The real problem is the refs using it correctly but it's not something that is a truly terrible idea.

This guy is the dumbest guy in football. You'd think after his terrible prediction on KDB he'd stay quiet but he keeps yapping.

He's just been on sky sports talking about ETH. I know he talks crap most of the time, but he just dropped a classic about Anthony. I haven't laughed so much in ages. Hope someone puts it up on social media.

I thought this was bumped because he's saying that Gary Neville should be brought in to solve the recruitment issue at United. Ridiculous, stupid analysis. He's such a muppet.

How old are you? When keepers got sent off in the days of one sub even two subs then an outfield player went in goal. Even when a keeper was injured it was very rare to have a substitute goalkeeper on the bench, an outfield player would go in goal. Great days.

Well I'm 39, but back to the subject, that ive had to read back through cause I don't even remember posting the message you quoted. The keeper hasn't been sent off in this scenario. He's sin binned. So can the outfield player who's been put in net even use his hands for those 10 mins.

Probably if he’s playing in that position.

Yes, anyone can play in goal at any time if they inform the referee during a stoppage in play and put on the appropriate coloured shirt.

Highly unlikely to happen at any sort of good level of football, but nothing to stop a goalie who was also a decent striker playing up front for the last few minutes with a central defender putting on the goalie shirt and gloves if a team was chasing an equaliser. Might see it at Sunday league or amateur level once in a blue moon.

Can even in theory do it very temporarily now so you could if sin bins were a thing too. Your goalie is a good penalty taker like Rogerio Ceni or Rene Higuita? Have him take it, but swap shirts with an outfield player and you still at least have someone in net should he miss and the opponents counter attack with the intention to swap back at the next stoppage in play. The teams these players for could have done this if they wanted but I don't think they ever bothered.

The downside would be that should you miss a pen, and the opponents do have the next attack but not so swiftly without the game ever stopping in between, your goalie would have been able to get back anyway and he wouldn't be allowed to now handle the ball, it's down to your outfielder who is now wearing the 'keepers shirt.

Would be a case of weighing up likelihood of scoring the pen v missing the pen v the likelihood that ball actually stays in play following a miss v likelihood of fast counter that you're unable to stop v slower buildup should it stay in play. On top of that players can always deliberatly foul or boot the ball anywhere to buy time for a keeper scrambling back so it's probably not worth the hassle of actually designating a different 'keeper just for the passage of play after a penalty has been awarded if you do have a penalty-taking goalie.
