Patrick Dorgu | United in talks

I haven't seen him play even once, but 30-40M for an inexperienced left-back seems like a lot. If he's truly regarded as a top talent, then why aren't other top clubs showing interest?

For a more affordable 20-25M punt, sure, I’d be open to it, but at 35-40M, there are definitely more established left-backs available. We could likely get someone like Miguel Gutierrez from Girona for much less, and he has already proven himself more than Dorgu. At 40M, we're talking about players like Kerkez or Ait-Nouri, who are much more consolidated. If we're looking for budget-friendly options, there are other promising players like Jorrel Hato from Ajax.

I really hope we don’t make the mistake of overpaying for him. That’s what put us in this difficult financial situation in the first place, and we need to make smarter business decisions moving forward.

I meant from even before but even still he was 4m which is in line with punting for a kid with hardly any experience.
Just seems odd that as soon as you saw Caicedo in a Brighton shirt you saw a polished Premier League player. Brighton themselves apparently saw a Koninklijke Beerschot Voetbalclub Antwerpen player.

Take your point though - I've no doubt that if we backed out, Napoli would snap up Dorgu and it wouldn't be costing them £30m.

We should draw the line at €30m and be prepare to walk away. We have to put an end to this glazer era overpaying on every transfer.

Thats why they didn't pay 40m euros for him.

Feels like a £15-20m player. Hope we don’t overpay.

Interesting, how much have you watched him play?

I know nothing about him myself, so I can't put a value on him as a player, but you are saying around the amount Everton paid for James Garner in 2022 would be his true value?

Yet nowhere near as technically gifted. I know which quality I'd rather us have in the team.

Carreras has CL experience, whilst being a member of a possession-dominant team near the top of the table, whilst Dorgu is battling it out for relegation. Carreras' experience and skillset is much more compatible, Dorgu won't know what's hit him.
He's playing against Barca tonight, it'll show his level going against Yamal. Be interesting to see.

There were many reasons they didn't pay €40m for him but I would guess that a big one would be that they didn't have to.
And nor do we for Dorgu. It's a stupid price and lecce know that. He's available for cheaper in the summer it seems.

Lecce rejected approaches from Chelsea and Spurs for him last year, Liverpool have been linked with him all year, City and Barca have been linked with him in the past and Napoli are bidding for him now.

Whatever about the price, this isn't some mega-obscure player. At some point some big club was going to buy him.

Caicedo was incredibly raw when he came to the PL - it’s quite a good comparison in my opinion
Caicedo was lightyears ahead of Dorgu. He was a wonderkid talent coming from Ecuador, his all rounded skill set is up there with the best I’ve seen from a player his age. You’re way off with ‘incredibly raw’.

I just watched an 11min youtube highlights video and from that I drew the following conclusions:

- he doesn't look like he's in control of the ball when he dribbles, aways a good sign
- has a decent but inconsistent touch
- scores goals for some reason
- no idea if he has good stamina
- plays in Seria A (a worrying sign)

I think we should sign him.

Congrats you've been promoted to chief scout

I haven’t seen him play - just the YT highlights. Doesn’t seem like he’s ever fully in control of the ball. I’m sure our scouts have more data on him. But for £30m+ I was hoping for a more polished player.

Prem proven is going to cost £50mil at the very lowest end.
I’d rather spend the extra fee on proven PL players than take a chance on this player. I’d be thinking any of Ait Nouri, Robinson , Kerkez would be in around £40/£50 million for example

I swear people live in the 2010’s still.
Players like Udogie, Kerkez and Estupunian all went for sub £20m fees in the last couple of years. I quite like the look of Dorgu but it's definitely an inflated fee.

Completely agree. Max we should be looking at is €35m with all add ons and add ons being at least 20% of the total package.

Their previous biggest sale was Hjulmand for €21m including add ons. He had over 150 senior appearances before his sale. Dorgu has just over 50 appearances. But they want €40m for him just cause it’s United. 100% sure that if Villa or Spurs were in for him, price would be max €30m total.

Also, Udogie was purchased by Spurs from Udinese for around €20m when he was the same age a couple of years ago . No way does it make sense to pay twice as much.

On to the next one I guess, if there is one that is.

We dont have the money for an expensive signing so I dont know why we dont just loan Sergio Reguilon (who would probably do alright in the LWB position) again for the rest of the season then see what's available in the summer.

I'm hoping we've learned from our terrible transfer history but I'm not confident we won't overpay
there's also mayor pressure on the club to at least sign someone at left back. Clubs know this plus they know our history of overpaying. It'll be a tough few transfer periods.

Sure, happy to clarify.

Davies and Delap have PL experience and are not unknown quantities.

Hope that helps it make sense for you.

So they are known to be good enough for United?

Because buying in the PL automatically is the best policy of course. It's worked out so well for United post Fergie buying players from mid to lower PL teams with AWB, Maguire, Schneiderlin, Fellaini, Lukaku etc.

£30m in todays football money is a somewhat modest sum for a 20 year old with potential, plus I think full backs and wing backs will soon fetch a lot more money than they used to due to their increasing importance in modern styles of play.

The fees going to be obviously inflated because it’s mid-season and we’re not doing too well, but I have more confidence in this hierarchy to not get us rinsed unlike the Woodward, Arnold and Murtough days.

This is exactly what drives me bonkers. We are talking about signing a more or less unknown left back for best part of 40m Euro on the understanding that its an inflated fee because its mid-season yet we are already driving down our own price on Garnacho and are likely to sell him for 50m Euro. Garnacho should not be leaving for anything less that 80m Euro minimum. End of. 40m for Dorgu is a joke. Far too overpriced.

Completely. Look at what Garnacho has done in his career, his scoring record, the big goals in key games. It wasn't that long ago we were saying he's the most exciting prospect we've had on the wings since Ronaldo arrived in 03. And his stats support this.

He's a goalscoring, match winning, 20 year old international winger who has won major trophies.

No way is his value only 10m more than Lecce's left back who has less than 50 career appearances. No justification whatsoever.
