Our Seasons Falling Apart

thats not the point!! (and it doesn't mean he can tackle)

we need a hold midfielder... especially against their attack/midfield.. they have a good forward line.

we'll be buggered in a 4-4-2... with two players who like to push forward.

You do Scholes a grave injustice there, he's a very clever tackler. Keane spoke of how Scholes knows when to put the boot in and stir up a player, I think you'll find that its not just clumsyness, he goes in hard. But the best thing about him is that he presses. Always. He hassles, pokes the ball off, muscles you, fouls you if need be, but won't let you past. I think he's fabulous at defensive mifielding too. Especially when you compare it with Veron's stand off Italian approach of basically doing nothing.

ok..

.........Fab

....Gaz Blanc o'shea Silvestre

Veron Phil/Fortune Scholes Giggs

.............Ole/forlan

............Ruud.

might swap veron around for scholes....

As long as you don't forget Mike Phelan...

Dunno about Phil. I'd have to look it up and I can't be bothered. :D

At times like this I wish we had kept Ronny Johnsen around. ( I wish we had kept him anyway, but especially moreso now). He would provide excellent cover for our centre backs and I always though he was brilliant as a holding midfielder. he had the tackling but also the passing skills.

I miss Ronny. :(

Me too, but I noticed that latterly SAF wouldn't risk him in that midfield role.

The squad could do with a further defensive utility player like him though, to supplement Keane & Butt and provide a bit of cover for the centre of defence.

It's no coincidence that one of our better performances in EPL this season was at Chelsea, with Keane Butt & O'Shea all getting stuck in.

Yep, the thing about versatile players is that when they go you need to replace them with either another versatile player or 2 or more players that play in those positions. O'Shea replaced him as centre back, and can also it seems replace the left back and right back cover of irwin, but not, as far as we know yet, cover the holding defensive midfielder role (or is that really just a defender in the hole?

I don't think it is "just a defender in the hole" as though any defender could play there. I think only defenders with certain skills can do it, and I think it lends itself better to a centre back moving forward rather than a full back moving inside.

O'Shea could do a job as a DM for a game if called upon imo. He seems to be able to do any defensive job and he even looks pretty handy going forward. We could switch Gary to Cb and Phil to RB, or even try giving Wes a run-out.

Bart

Phil Gary Blanc Silvestre

Diego Scholes O'Shea Giggs

Ole Ruud

O'Shea certainly has Johnsen-esque tendencies.

I was wondering when Wes was coming back.

I'd love to know what positions O'Shea had played in in the reserves and academy sides. Maybe he's played it before there? He looks like he might be able to do it.

Wes played his first reserve match on Thursday and I've read that he's included in the squad for tomorrow.

Perm anyone from Rio, Fab or Becks. Losing any of them weaken our chances against West Ham. I've predicted a 4-0 with a hatrick for RVN, but with our current form we could give ANY team confidence.

I'm sick of the stat that Villa have only scored once away all season. Then you see Siddy lose to Charlton. Its like having Atkinson back ;)

BBC says he is in the squad, but then so is Rio.

Barthez, G Neville, O'Shea, Ferdinand, Blanc, Silvestre, Beckham, Veron, Fortune, Giggs, Scholes, van Nistelrooy, Solskjaer, Forlan, P Neville, Chadwick, Ricardo.

"But Beckham has been playing poorly for most of the season!"

Well, maybe by his standards. But you remember the result of the two games there he didn`t play this season? Big problem is that there seems no player instead of Keane or Becks who can captain this team. Thought Gary Neville can do it. But it didn`t look like that last week.

Thanks Gazza and Spacey. Sid, you're a lazy cnut ;)

I'd give Fortune another go in the middle of the park instead of Phil. Not an anti-Neville thing, but I don't see Phil as a midfield player at all - fair play, he gets on with it and does his best.

I'm intrigued about the prospect of O'Shea being that DM utility player but fearful of the flack from Livvie about a player being forced to play out of position.

We must expect another chasing tomorrow and the game could be won or lost in the middle of the park.

It's all the late nights, I tell ya. ;)

O'Shea would seem to be possibly the more natural choice as the spare DM cover, but what about Wes? Do you think you could do it? He's got the tackling, the engine and the pace. Fairly comfy on the ball, and maybe in the midfield the occasional positional/concentration lapses he is prone to wouldn't be potentially as costly. Thoughts?

well giggs can't unless he is given the armband.
