Listen, Ronaldo scores goals. There is nothing taking away from that. Everyone wants him at the club, he's right up there with King Eric.
The argument around Ronaldo is that the entire team sets up differently. As a collective we are significantly weaker this season than last. This YouTube video describes it more meaningfully than any textpost, so here:
Think of it as a system that works in (relative) harmony. A new link in the chain has a higher personal output but behaves differently in the harmonic system. Its not necceserily a negative, but it is a problem that needs resolving, and so far we have frankly been unable to figure out how to remain one coherent unit and work with the link up top.
The defense is the same apart from an incredible upgrade. The midfield is the same, everything is the same, and yet team performance is so much worse.
Our entire structure is, or at least was, centered around the high press that starts at forward position. We can no longer do that because one chain with a higher output does not do one task that the collective relies on to function. With Edi up top that sorted itself out v Tottenham because Edi presses.
Ronaldo scoring goals is always used as a stick to beat the argument that he doesnt press with, but the collective not functioning is supposedly completely unrelated.
There is a very valid discussion to be had that Ronaldo makes us worse as a team because the entire team is unable to adapt to a new reality where one link is stationary, while also aknowleding that his offensive output is remarkable, and contribution off-pitch is invaluable.
Ronaldo not pressing and hounding the buildbup play like a Cavani would do is not to blame for Shaw and Maguires comical fall from form, or Pogbas giveaway recordbreaking efforts, but its definitely a discussion that needs to be had with whoever is in charge in 2 weeks.
