Our greatest ever “short term flings”

In terms of goals he wasn't all that but we struggled a bit with Saha out and him coming in relieved us a bit instantly. Was a very solid foil for Rooney and Ronaldo One of the weirdest moves we have made in the transfer market, but also one of the best short-term.
True, it's also making a statement to the opposition.

We were always prepared to back our managers financially with a lot of trust and responsibility to SAF.

How many clubs would be in for Berbatov at that price? So I think it's like the club saying that regardless of injuries, we're still going to hire skillful, creative players and keep our standards high.

Our attack was pretty ruthless, it wasn't anything like that of the volatile Newcastle and it's one of those attributes that SAF was synonymous with.

There are several I thought of which have all been mentioned here.

However, I really liked Michael Owen's stint with us. The hat trick against Wolfsburg, and that winner against Citeh!
What I love most though is how I can wind up Liverpiiiwwwllll fans by referring to him as a Man Utd Legend, a real Utd Hero - a proper Utd No. 7. I mean, he is a legend and a hero of ours for those reasons as far as I'm concerned, but it's so satisfying to over-exaggerate it and wind up the Scousers!

The Larsson one is always weird. I love his little cameo. But he only played ten times I think? Two goals was it?

It’s painted as a stroke of genius by Fergie and there’s a little in that. He added instant quality at a tricky period from what I remember. But I don’t remember his goals being that important. Did he have a winner in there anyway?

Regardless, the football romantic in me loved it of course. Wish he could have stayed.

He allowed Rooney and Ronaldo to be rotated when we were playing 3 games a week.

Saha was injured for a period, we'd sold Ruud the previous summer and had no other striker.

He was an important temporary fix.

Pique definitely counts! He was very good in the 2-1 game against Arsenal in 2008 where we effectively ended their chance at the title, which earns him a shout alone! That Hargreaves free kick as well
Definitely! I would include Pique.

Personally, if I woke up one day and realised I had played for us and SAF, lived and played in Barcelona earning millions and having Shakira I would be thinking that nobody could be <<that>> lucky!

Ibra for me. He was a dominant figure on the pitch and you could sense he appreciated that United are a special club. But the injury happened and we made the sensible decision to let him go, although he did have plenty left in the tank once he fully recovered.

Tevez, on loan for 2 seasons, helped us win a lot of trophies and for wherever reason decided not to stay.

You people with your short memories. Who can forget the accelerating neutron star that was… Luke Garbutt

Blomqvist. Only proper season and he won a treble. Thought he was a really classy winger.

He never came anywhere near the levels off what his natural talent had in store for him, because her couldn't handle a competitive environment.

His best season was 94/95 he was arguably the best left winger in the world, even was ranked in team of the season by Goal magazine ahead of Ginola, Lentini and Giggs. That season he was beeing dominant twice against Man Utd, Barcelona and Galatasaray - anyone following IFK at that time saw he was levels above any other player in a team that were top-10 in Europe. He also scored one of the most unique goals in the league that season:

Ironically during that period he was doing conscription and just joined the team for games, which was probably one of the reasons of his form at that time - he had no time to overthink anything. His own brain and confidence was his biggest enemy. It also was visible in the national team, he went from world class winger to the worst player on the field everytime he played for Sweden.

As someone that saw both Blomqvist and Ibrahimovic in the beginnings of their careers, Blomqvist were many levels above Zlatan, but Zlatan had the opposite psyche and just became better with more competitive teams.

Just to mention someone new, I quite liked Dan James during his two seasons. He was never talented enough to stay for long but he had a good attitude and gave us a weapon with his pace. Had some standout performances.

Larsson was inspired, to get someone of that quality who could just do bits and pieces in matches, incredible signing.

I loved Cavani the second he walked in and wished we’d signed him a decade earlier, you could smell the quality and he showed up every other attacker.

Loved Blomqvist it was a real shame it didn’t quite work out. Started in 99 CL final though!

Blomqvist. He played with an injury during that CL final which ended up ruining his career

Many mention stam and Yorke as the two signings that made the difference during the treble run. I believe jesper should be mentioned as well. United's biggest issue at the time was that we were heavily reliant on Giggs. The Welsh wizard was untouchable on his day but he had a tendency of vanish in the treatment room (hamstring) leaving the left flank completely exposed creative wise. Blomqvist sorted that.

RVP for me. He was magical. That late free kick against City is engraved in my brain.

Gordon Hill, three seasons I know but I saw that Saha got a mention and he was here longer;

Larsson was the first that came to mind.. 06/07 was also a great season.. probably the one I enjoyed the most. Even the jersey was great.

Larsson and RVP.
RVP is probably one of my favourite United players. Both speak so positively about United.

There’s been a few in recent years, but most were here in name only. When you reel off the names though, it’s like the FIFA 12 world XI or something - Zlatan, Falcao, Schweinsteiger, Cavani, Di Maria, Alexis Sanchez, Cristiano Ronaldo…we just got them all too late.

Unpopular opinion I know but I think people go well overboard on Larsson.

His spell at the club was during my peak interest in football years and I was going to United every single week...so saw most of his appearances for us live. Wasn't blown away, he looked a player in decline at that point.

Many people credit him with helping us getting over the line but he only really ever made up the numbers. His contribution was arguably less than the average United squad player over the course of the season for me.

I think it was more in the manner he came in.

He was obviously nowhere near the level he was at Celtic, but because of injuries on Saha, Solskjaer and Smith and because of time of year and the already full squad, the idea to find someone that could go in to the team for 3 months and do consistent 6/10 showings on the highest level, without having played with the squad was more or less impossible.

But because Larsson was playing in Sweden at that time, that has spring to autumn schedule, he was available. And experienced enough to still play at that level. And had the flexibility to play at four different positions. And he was admired by the other players even if he only played 2 months.

If you read Fergusons autobiography it's obvious that no player has had a bigger impact on him, that played for such a short time.

I think people are saying Larsson as it was really short term, only about 6 weeks. The impact he had was definitely great over such a short period.

I hated his signing. He didn't want to be there, and it showed on the pitch. A few highlights, but the big eared ponce largely stunk out the place.

Always felt like he was too light for the Prem. He looked like wind could knock him over.

If Varane's three years is considered a short stint then Jaap Stam is up there for me.

1998-2001 he was a World Class CB. Was still in his prime when Fergie sold him off.
