Yes... Vivell made the deal with Haaland for Salzburg, but it's not like Haaland was an unearthed gem at the time. Which probably is the kind of deal negotation that gets him now the job as head of recruitment.

Pretty sure Matt Hargreaves is still at the club, another Murtough appointment. He's Director of Player Negotiations and likely has been involved in our offers so far.
Obviously we've made contact already if we've been discussing things with De Ligt, Zirkzee, Ugarte and Branthwaite. Only Murtough left of the people involved in recruitment/football operations. Everyone else who left was financial/senior executive IIRC.

We should have hired a DOF in January 2013 with a remit to oversee the transition from Gill and Sir Alex to Ed and Moysie and conduct a full review of the squad and worked with Moysie to groundwork in place for the signings needed to fit the style he wanted to play once he was appointed.
You mean that hiring an investment banker to oversee footballing duties at the club might have been the wrong decision? It's a bit mean to criticise someone who can't even defend himself because he's still away on important transfer business related to Fabregas.

Without all the people above the manager we’d see every manager that came in recruit their own players, their own coaches and their own tactics then the next person would have their way yet players that don’t fit so a massive rebuild is needed then the same would happen again and again so basically what’s happened for the last decade.
The structure above mean that no matter what happens with the head coach the tactical aspect, recruitment aspect and scouting aspect would remain the same and everyone sings from the same sheet.
The days of someone like Sir Alex or Wenger who had absolute power across the board are gone and instead of managers it’s head coaches with a structure above to make sure a club has everything in place for the head coach to succeed and work in the desired club way.
What a change. It has immediate effect on the clubs we negotiate with considering they know that people on the other side are actually the best around in what they do. No more Woodward, Judge or three desperados/lawyers who tried to close Ander Herrera deal.

- Christopher Vivell has been appointed as Manchester United’s director of global talent on a temporary basis.
- The Athletic reported earlier this month that Vivell’s arrival at Old Trafford was on an initial short-term contract to help with the summer transfer window. He will report to the club’s newly-appointed sporting director Dan Ashworth.
- Vivell, 37, officially started his role on Thursday (July 4) and will assist United by lending his expertise around player recruitment and talent ID.
- Although Vivell’s appointment is a temporary one, there is a possibility that he becomes a full-time employee at the club.
- Vivell worked as a video analyst and scout with German club Hoffenheim before moving to RB Leipzig, initially as head of scouting before becoming a technical director involved in constructing the Bundesliga club’s squad.
- Vivell joined Chelsea as technical director in December 2022 before leaving Stamford Bridge in July 2023.
- At United, he will report to Ashworth who in turn will oversee the club’s football departments, including technical, performance and operations areas.
- Also reporting to Ashworth will be United’s technical director Jason Wilcox, who will help assist manager Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff implement a clear game model and football methodology that will run from the club’s first-team down to its academy, while also leading on first-team player recruitment.
- Vivell role’s will include recommending the best available talent for the men’s first-team squad which fits with the game model, while identifying emerging talents who will fit into the club’s strategy.
- Sporting director Ashworth will report to the club’s new CEO Omar Berrada, who will start work on July 13 after joining from Manchester City.

Those RB clubs get great players for peanuts. There absolutely is value out there if you’re not scared to make a few mistakes.
He might have signed Szobozlai for Leipzig but he was already at Salzburg so couldn’t count that one if that’s the case. If he signed him for Salzburg that’s another really good one.
Any reports expounded on why the short-term deal? Is that something he wanted/insisted on or was that United?
Might have someone else in mind for the role but given Vivell’s credentials if he impresses we might offer him something permanent.

Also Ashworth being in the door 5 minutes and being able to make decisions like this is a welcome change from the endless dithering from past regimes.
It doesn't translate that easily to bigger clubs. Obviously there's always going to be cases of huge talents joining big clubs from an early age, but you will have a larger amount of big talents that go to stepping stone clubs to get more experience rather than trying to bridge a massive gap and risk fading out. They get them for peanuts, but they aren't really available for anyone to sign.
The thing that Dortmund and RBL/S have on us is that they will start playing someone regularly at 17/18 if they have enough potential. Having Salzburg in Austria was a genius move. An easier league, CL football… great coaching. Hopefully under our multi club model we can buy prospects for Lausanne and Nice and actually have then be able to eventually play for us. They know they are signing for Utd more or less if it goes really well. Also bringing the very best straight to Utd and loaning them out is a great way to make money on sales
