Oriol Romeu

Why would Jose want him?

He barely played him when he was at Chelsea. He could have used him ahead of Mikel. It's not a Lukaku and De Bruyne situation where despite popular belief, Jose wanted both to stay.

Good question. He might not of course. But then I didn't think he would want Mata when he came to United, yet now I think he's thankful he has him.

Different club, different situation. He had Matic and Mikel back then who were more experienced and established. He might have been allowed to move, not because Mou didn't rate him, but because he didn't envision using him in the near future and it was best for both parties. Like Mata.

Also, it does often happen with young players that when they move to new clubs where they get opportunities, they mature and develop beyond their previous manager's expectations. These cases are the minority of course, but they are not that rare.

Kante is 100% a defensive midfielder. Yes, he plays with another defensive midfielder in Matic, but that does not mean he isn't one. Just look at his average position during games.

A Romeu, Herrera, Pogba midfield three is too defensive in my opinion... especially for a club that prides itself on adventurous attacking football.

Anyway, I am going to have to leave this debate soon as I've said my opinion and just can't be bothered with the endless alerts my 'controversial opinion' is throwing my way...

I don't see how anyone can debate that Kante isn't a DM. When you look up Defensive Midfielder in the the Thesaurus is just says 'Kante' under Gattuso and Makelele.

Completely agree with the second point - in that scenario everything offensive falls to Pogba who, judging by recent form, is miles away from being able to run our midfield alone.

Your view of football is far too simplistic. Herrera is a very intelligent player... there are times when as a defensive midfielder you sit, and others where you can press and have the opportunity to harass and win the ball. It's not simply a case of "this is your job, you just sit and hold position in front of the back four". You do both at different times during the game... just like Matic and Kante both do at Chelsea.

I agree with everything you say. I think it's easy to blame ordinary football on ' lacking a good DM' and people think there's a DM out there who will shield the defence and magically transform us. We didn't blame our lack of a DM on anything in Keane's time. We just went out and played. For what it's worth I'd like to see a Herrera, Keita, Pogba midfield three because I think we lack agility and quick movement more than anything.

TBF he is having a good season and seems strong in that position and moves the ball quick. Jose wants a Kante and bought the lad before so its not out fo the realms of possibility.
Mourinho never bought him for Chelsea (I think that was AVB), he sold him

He's not a Kante, more in the Busquets mold. Playing really well this season, a key figure at Southampton. Don't think he'd fit our team the way we play now unless it would be at the expense of Herrera and I don't think that would be an upgrade. Also don't think he'll leave Southampton after just signing a deal and I don't think clubs will try and get him at this point.

Using SAF's 99 format as a template:
....................Keane vs. Herrera...................
Beckham vs. Keita...........Giggs vs. Pogba...
.....................Scholes vs. Mkhitaryan..........
........Yorke vs. Griezmann......Cole vs. Martial........
Subs: not incl. defenders: Sheringham vs. Zlatan..
...........................................Solksjaer vs. Rashford....
...............................................Butt vs. Fellaini........
..............................................Blomqvist vs. Lingard..
Not quite as good but then, who is?
I would expect this team to issue a ferocious challenge for the league.

Probably the best player on the pitch today, got the better of Wanyama on numerous occasions. I think he'd adapt just like Wanyama has at Spurs, immediately make the midfield stronger and far more capable of winning challenges and getting to the second ball.

I like this player - he can fill in the void for Carrick.

Not particularly great with the ball but his reading oif the game and tackling was very good today.
