Only Fools and Horses

The Vicar of Dibley comes third so the opinion of the masses isn't exactly the most reliable method of assessing quality. OFAH was very good, albeit a very traditional British sitcom, particularly in the middle few years but it is light years away from the brilliance of Blackadder which was both hilarious and clever. Which isn't a bad thing because very little, including Fawlty Towers, is as good overall. Blackadder Goes Forth is possible the best comedy series ever made anywhere combining the best of Blackadder 2 and 3 with a much darker sense of irony.

I was a regular watcher of OFAH for some of it's run although I lost interest later on but I wouldn't bother watching a whole episode again, unlike Blackadder. it is still hard to go past the best of Python. The way their best episodes linked sketches together is still unsurpassed.

I am not that keen on Blackadder, take it or leave it. I know quite a few other people that didn't follow the series. OFAH had a much broader appeal.

There have been lots of comedies I prefer. Not the Nine O'Clock News was hilarious. I personally like Red Dwarf and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Is bang on.

Goes Forth is pure genius, best of the lot.

Mjs, your argument of mass appeal, is both pointless and meaningless, for obvious reasons, not even sure why you are going with that line of defence tbh.

I personally prefer Blackadder season 2 as my favourite. Some of the lines were hysterical. Only Fools and Horses is of course one of the all time great British comedies and I think has stood the test of time pretty well. There are some classic episodes/moments.

Bottom series 1 is the best comedy I have seen but Blackadder comes close

The point is MORE people find OFAH funny. Kind of relevant when you are discussing which is the better/funniest series.

Otherwise it would just end up with IMO 'A' is better than 'B', and that would just be pontificating.

Yeah, I agree. Nothing quite matches Blackadder(in particular, Goes Forth).

Blackadder 4 is right up there with the most well written and acted series I've ever seen but I re-watched 3 lately and found myself underwhelmed. Admittedly Blackadder isn't the best place to go if sarcasm is something you can only appreciate in limited doses but it really did grate after a while. A further problem was that they just tried far too hard in writing Atkinson's lines and ended up packing them with ridiculously over-elaborate similes and too many big words and it often took the snappy comic edge off them. They got the balance just right in 4.

I'm also going to get battered for this but I think Only Fools has aged pretty badly too when compared to classics like Fawlty Towers

But the most underrated British comedy of all time is the Fast Show. Absolute genius from start to finish. No show ever came close to matching it when it came to the recurring oddball/one-liner premise. Those two Little Britain gimps should have sat down in a locked room with DVDs of the combined seasons and taken notes until they got it right.

3 is nowhere near as good as 2 and 4 was even better.

My personal favorites from the last thirty years:

1 - Monty Python - the inspiration to a lot of comedy that followed.

2 - Fawlty Towers - that funny it made you cry.

3 - Fools and Horses - best family comedy

4 - Blackadder - the best written

5 - I'm Alan Partridge - very talented guy.

6 - Red Dwarf - simply stupid, perfect

7 - Soap - the only hilarious American comedy I have seen.

8 - The League of Gentlemen

9 - Bread - its a northern thing.

10 - Not the Nine O'Clock News

Special mention for Last of the Summer Wine.......holly shit I can't believe that shows is still going.

this will probably sound 'gay' - but the good life was good. The wife was quite fit too.

Had the 40 best moments of only fools and horses on a few nights back and it just seems kinda 'hmm' that most of us can guess what number one was when there were so many

They didn't even have uncle albert asking the german girl, 'What iz ** name?' classic

It was a funny series. There are lots of damn good comedies in the list in the link in this thread .

WTF - so the masses don't agree with you makes them wrong. :wenger::rolleyes:

The masses get most thing wrong so why not this?

Spice girls, tabloid newspapers, The Macarena, desire for corporal and capital punishment, knee jerk reactions to everything, The Vicar of Dibley, The Birdie Song, Cheeky Girls, Cliff Richard, Wham, Agadoo, Aqua, Billy Ray Cyrus, Vanilla Ice, Chris de Burgh etc etc etc

And I like OFAH. I just don't think that it is anywhere near the best comedy ever made.

Ahh at last!

Someone else who thinks Vanilla Ice was class.

But Only Fools has stood the test of the time, people still love it 20 odd years later, so its not some fad like the Cheeky Girls or gained its popularity from media hype.

If you read what I actually said you will notice that I liked OFAHs quite a bit. The point is that on its own popularity (however you measure it) isn't the only much less the best way of assessing quality. Popular doesn't mean that it was bad either.
