So, this is some way ahead of the hit & giggle (as Marchi puts it, so well) of T20. Its not a Test Match, of course, but at least it's a chance for the batsmen to play themselves in and for the bowlers to use the pitch and the conditions. Also, it serves as good practise for the World Cup which starts a couple of weeks after the last match.

I rather wish that they had cut out the T20 and a couple of the ODIs and put in a 6th test, but there you go...

Please note:

The fifth match is at Brisbane, can the Aussies on here confirm if is this likely to be cancelled or is the ground high enough to escape the terrible flooding going on? Perhaps it will be run as a some sort of benefit match to help with the flood relief?

Good practice for the WC but 7 games is too many, 5 would have been enough.

It would be nice if they had a benefit match for the flood effort. I read that KP auctioned off his ashes shirt & bat to raise some money, nice gesture by him.

The Steve Smith wankathon continues. He's set to start.

Watson, Marsh, Ponting, Clarke, White, Hussey, Haddin, Hauritz, Bollinger, Nannes, Siddle

This would be my line-up for the WC

For some reason, they've omitted Nannes from the set-up completely. Strange to not see him in the T20s.

ODI series, Australia V England

1st of 7 games. England started well and then dropped slightly. Good pitch and will be interesting if Australia can match their total.

Great seeing Bretty in full flight again :D:D:D:D

If he delivers like he has been for NSW, you're all well fecked!

What a rubbish over from Tremlett just now.

Great knock from Watson...has had real problems converting his good scores to big scores in all formats, and really got a HUGE score tonight.

Both teams have plenty of work to do...Haddin with his keeping, and some of the bowling by australia(Doherty/Smith), and

England with some of their late innings field settings, and set batsmen getting out to rubbish shots(Morgan/Bell)

One other thought...Steve Smith, WTF, seriously selectors, give me a go, rather than that pig faced freak.

Steve Smith is the most baffling selection I've seen in a long time. He's picked as an all-rounder, but is almost never given the ball. Averages around 10 with the bat when he comes to bat. Why even pick the guy?

I said it on here that he's massively over-rated awhile back. Steve Waugh with "the most talented australian player in 20 years" bullshit.. selectors seem to have bought into it.

He just keeps starting every match in every format, bizarrely.

He lives down the road from Steve Waugh, could be a reason why. I live down the road Steve (Waugh), give me a crack!

Smith's eye is pretty awesome, he will be handy. More handy then half the other bats out there. The problem is halfway through making a name for himself as a bowler they told him to focus more on his batting. Now Australia have no reliable spinners.

Michael clarke can go before steve smith IMO.

Mitchell Johnson and Doug Bollinger can go before all of them. fecking joke how these two ever get selected. You whinge about Tait but he at times bowls as bad as these two but still has a 155kmh ball up his sleeve and can bang in a good line and length.

As for your comments about Brett Lee the other night :p

He will once again spear head the Australian Bowling attack like he has done when fit since McGrath retired. The rest of our bowlers are a bunch of fecking no hopers who think a good line and length is either pitched on leg stump just above waist height, or pitches about 2 feet outside the line of off at shoulder height.

Stand by your beds guys...another wasted morning at work in the offing!

Australia pace bowler Mitchell Johnson will miss the second one-day international against England in Hobart because of a throat infection.
However, the 28-year-old Western Australia player is expected to be fit for the third game in Sydney on Sunday.
Fellow paceman Shaun Tait, who withdrew from Sunday's opener with a back complaint, is set to replace Johnson.
England wicketkeeper Matt Prior is set to open with skipper Andrew Strauss after being added to the ODI squad.

Australia (from): Shane Watson, Brad Haddin (wk), Michael Clarke (capt), Steve Smith, Cameron White, David Hussey, Xavier Doherty, Brett Lee, Doug Bollinger, Shaun Marsh, Nathan Hauritz, Peter Siddle, Shaun Tait.

England (from): Andrew Strauss (capt), Matt Prior (wk), Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell, Eoin Morgan, Michael Yardy, Tim Bresnan, Ajmal Shahzad, Chris Tremlett, Paul Collingwood, Luke Wright, Steven Davies (wk), James Tredwell, Chris Woakes, Steven Finn.

It's a late start though isn't it, gone 3am isn't it

I'll just watch it at work tomorrow, and by watch, I mean read cricinfo's ball by ball coverage

Australia despite the decline in Test Cricket are still the no. 1 side in One Day Cricket...won 3 World Cups on the trot, so it's not that big a surprise that more of a fight is being put up.

Also, match 1, was won on the back of one man, Watson, with his 160, and tonight again, it was one individual, with a critical century(Marsh), you take that away, and it was almost shambolic batting(White and Helmet head aside).

That was the worst one day performance from an England side i've seen in a decent while.

The batting was absolutely pathetic.

Thought all of the Australians bowled tidy except for Tait but thats expected given he's there to take wickets not worry about runs. Should focus on his conditioning prior to the world cup as he'll be valuable and we don't need this strains.
I just don't understand why Bollinger can't bowl like this all the time. He's smarter then Johnson but fails to make the most out of it.

What we're seeing now is the vulnerability of the English batting attack and just how good their test bowlers are. A great batting side does not collapse 3 times in a series. Thats not to say the Australian batsmen are much better but this entire series was based on just how good and poor the bowling sides were for each team.

what do you think the bowling philosphy with smith is. Only bowl him when we need to try something different to break a partnership or rest/hide/protect him before the world cup?

an awesome come back from aussies especially when they were 8 down

Stupid review by England, plumb LBW and Prior gone for a duck again. Great to see Brett Lee back in international cricket.

Not much of a total being put up by England, but the aussie batting lineup hasn't really put anything together yet...so let's see how things turn out.

Not sure if the England players can't be bothered or not(they should be bothered, this series might lead to a few playing themselves in/out of the starting lineup for the WC) but they've looked dire.

Trott's the worst man in the world to have at the crease for the batting powerplay.

Some great catching by the Aussies in this match. Brett Lee is looking back to his best.
