Vodafone Match Preview

After having already returned to the scene of last season's Champions League semi-final exit, United revisit another familiar stadium this Wednesday.

Like Bayer Leverkusen, the Reds were drawn against Greece's Olympiakos for the second season in a row and will travel to the Spiros Louis stadium for a match in which a point will suffice to see them through to the next stage of the UEFA competition.

Having dispatched Leverkusen, Maccabi Haifa and Olympiakos so far - with a maximum nine points from the three games - United are just a draw away from reaching Sir Alex Ferguson's goal of ten points to reach the second group stage.

They must do so without last season's top scorer, the most expensive defender in the world, the club captain and the most in-form midfielder, however. Ruud van Nistelrooy, Rio Ferdinand, Roy Keane and Nicky Butt are all missing through injury, leaving Fergie with the bare bones in Greece.

If that constitutes a crisis, then what you could call Olympiakos' current plight is uncertain. They've not played a domestic game so far this season, thanks to the television row that has delayed the start of the Greek season - and yet they decided to sack their manager just two weeks before the visit of United.

Takis Lemonis had been in charge for two and a half seasons, and had won the Greek championship twice. His failure to take Olympiakos beyond the first group stage of the Champions League cost him his job, however. Despite losing to Haifa and United, Olympiakos are tied withthe other two teams in Group F thanks to their 6-2 thumping of Bayer Leverkusen on matchday one. It's very possible that he could have broken his duck this term, but unfortunately he won't be given the chance.

Former Greece Under-21 coach Yiannis Kollias has taken charge of the side temporarily, but may end up lasting longer than the club president, who is under investigation after allegations of espionage against the state were made against him. If that's not a crisis, what is?!

History is also against Olympiakos as they head into Wednesday night's match. United have beaten "Legend" on all three occasions the teams have met, scoring nine goals and conceding none. On top of that, the Reds have never lost to Greek opposition - winning five and drawing two of the seven meetings to date. Brazilian midfielder Ze Elias is suspended from the match after his Old Trafford red card, so Kollias must choose who to replace the influential player with.

Last time out, United won 3-0 at Old Trafford thanks to goals from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ryan Giggs and Ruud van Nistelrooy, while the Reds were triumphant in the away fixture against Olympiakos, with David Beckham and Andy Cole finding the net.

Three of those five goalscorers will start the match in Greece, giving Fergie's men a great chance of qualifying for the second group stage with two matches to spare. Easy!

That minute by minute thingie in the Guardian is really funny.

http://football.guardian.co.uk/news/matchreport/0,9752,817726,00.html

17 mins: Olympiakos 0 - 1 Manchester United. A lot of fannying around in midfield. Forlan wins a free by getting brought down by somebnody who then gets booked. Beckham sends in the free, the goalkeeper flaps at iut and sends it out for another corner. Giggs whips it in, Blanc gets on the end of it and - totally unmarked - heads it home from the edge of the six yard box. He'll never score an easier goal than that if he plays until; he's 100. "Why not use auto complete for these long Johnny Foreigner names?" enquires Mike Connolly. Bah! Auto complete is for girls. If I couold, I'd carve the individual words out on potato halves, dip them in paint and write my reports that way.
