Is Ole a good appointment?

I know it’s virtually impossible to think of, but theoretically:

If we gets through the Feb/March period with full wins, would it be acceptable to call for his full time appointment?

Yeah, the system van Gaal played in the City game, with Fellaini, Young and Blind on the left, and Mata, Herrera and Rooney on the right was very effective, then he inexplicably abandoned it almost immediately afterwards.
Van Gaal seemingly didnt know what he was trying to do until he stumbled into something that worked. He promptly abandoned that and went to a double pivot system that was a monumental failure.

I've read some good insights into his attacking to the game, but wanted to ask about his approach to youth development.

Does Ole have a track record of bringing youth into the 1st team and developing? I ask this question for both academy players and external young signings

For me, attacking football and embedding our great youth prospects into the matchday squad would be a salvation to the season

Molde's top goalscorer this year is an 18 year old who is set to make a record (for Norway) transfer to the Red Bull franchise.

I imagine a lot of people were saying the same about Fletcher when he first broke into the first team.
They were and it was embarrassing how many people were wrong on him, especially as Fletcher was evidently decent and broke through with the actual expectation of being good enough to hold down a first team place indefinitely.

If McTominay makes the grade, by all means come back and laugh at me in a few years' time, but I am almost certain he won't.

This. I've zero confident in him bringing our swagger back. Yes it's a good love story but at the end what matters is is he competent to run a club of this caliber? His last stint at Cardiff was a disaster and as a manager he has no experience of high level of football, he has never been in this position before. Legend or not I think this is another stupid decision from our board, we could easily find ourselves fighting relegation by end of season. His Cardiff team was far away from playing the good football people want to see here. Hope he proves me wrong because he's a legend of the club and left many good memories from his time here, one of my preferred player, but I've zero confident in him as a manager.
I bet that you're a glass half empty kind of guy aren't you?

His stint at Cardiff was during a period of civil war for the club. The owner changed their strip to red and the squad was poor. He learnt from that experience.

How about we get behind him and the club instead of writing him off in hyperbole nonsense?

I think we are holding out for Poch in the summer, no matter what the cost.

That has Alderweireld written all over it and we dont end up getti g him and go into panic mode.

We need to know well before the window what Pochettino is doing so we have a plan B.

I honestly dont like our chances with the long contract he signed. To me that suggests he is committed to the Spurs project. And he signed the contract with full knowledge of interest from RM. Perez certainly hasnt been shy in his praise.

That and he will cost a lot, pay off Mourinho, to get Levy to agree to the sale we are going to get bent over and reamed. And then pay out Poch's contract once we've paid however much to get Levy to agree.

He had a bucket load of strikers this season but put his faith solely in a 17 year old to lead the line. Håland ended up being third top scorer in the league and will join high flying Salzburg in January.

"I'm a molde fan, and u're pretty much right about everything. They do play out from the back though. No hoofballing. Doesn't pass that much sideways, which is probably why the possession isn't that high"

As mentioned the other day, there is no quality solution on the market so OGS
has to be the gap filler currently.

What's the pro's and con's:

Pro's:
- He knows the club and has been succesful (as a player)
- is available.
- "good game reading skills" Ferguson (saw once that in a documentary, when SAF praised OGS' game analyzing skills and why he always was 1st substitude)
- big career chance

Con's:
- hasn't been training a big club
- only 1 club top 5 league experience (Cardiff 2014 -> relegated + sacked himself after 7 games)
- Might not be authority for the likes of Pogba, Alexis etc. (imo the most dangerous point)

Only if he wins the C.L !

Alfe Inge Haaland's kid, right? He's some talent.

That's right. And Ole has also put in numerous youth players and depended on them during high-profile games. He doesn't seem shy in giving youth players the chance - which will be key to his success. Many like me still believe LVG was a good manager simply because he gave the likes of Rashford and Lingard the opportunity to shine.

Thanks for the replays. I wonder if we can draw paraells here with Greenwood. young striker gets the nod over exoeriened platees if he is good enough

As an aside, I think I signed Haland on my last Ajax game on the last version of Football Manager. Bags them in for fun in that game!

I'm just so, so happy! First we get Mourinho out of the club, and then we bring Solskjær in to replace him?! I couldn't have dreamt up something better!

Absolutely confident that Ole Gunnar will bring some swagger back to the club. I'd say it's 90% likely that he does an OK job, and goes back to Molde this summer with his head high without having achieved anything spectacular. Which is entirely fine considering the situation we're in.

However, there's a small chance that he pulls everything together, and we suddenly start looking like Manchester United again. We play entertaining football, promote a kid or two and go on a run that brings us back into the top four and perhaps to the closing stages of the Champions League. That's the dream. And, now there's actually a chance of it happening, which makes me really, really excited. For the first time in many years, it feels so exciting to be a United fan again!

fecking 'a, bring on the weekend!

Can you please share that insight, link would do

I do struggle to get the giddiness over Ole getting the job, I don’t get it. Maybe I’m just heartless.

I remember how excited everyone was when Giggs was put in temporary change, how overjoyed people were and let’s face it he was pretty pants.

The poll could do with more options, I think he's an ok choice as a stopgap until we get in a proper manager.

I’m struggling to understand this move from OGS’ perspective. Why would he leave a steady job at a club where he’s appreciated for the current mess at Man Utd? There’s no realistic chance of winning anything significant (CL / PL), a risk of leaving with some bruises in his reputation and no job lined up for the summer. Sure, it’s still Man Utd for OGS, but what would his perspective be? A chance of turning things around and becoming the permanent manager? Or maybe a reinteosuction to the club to become DOF this summer?

This is such a bizarre appointment that it's genuinely impossible to work out how it will go.

His Premier League record is atrocious and he could seriously damage what little resilience and quality is left in your side, but the reverse is that he could be something of a soft touch the players need to play to their full potential - and with Phelan back in the dugout De Gea, Valencia, Jones, Fellaini and Mata could have something of a confidence boost.

United aren't a club in a position to throw everything on a coin toss, though, and that's exactly what they've done.

This feels like another rash appointment (based on nothing but sentiment this time). Love Ole but he's achieved nothing of note as a manager. If the players didn't respect Mourinho, what chance they respect Ole?

Nobody wants Hughes or Bruce here as a manager, so why Ole? Frankly he's in the same category - great former player but managerial nobody. His only time in England he was crap.

If Laurent Blanc was available then he was the right choice. Clearly Pogba is the biggest personality in the dressing room - if Ole doesn't get him onside immediately, he's gonna be joking around like the clown he is and the cards will come tumbling down again. I figure Blanc has a better chance of keeping him onside for 6 months and has experience managing a big team with big egos (albeit not that well).

I really hope I'm wrong on this but I can already see this being a disaster and Ole being gone before the end of the season.

Why do people throw these points out without research?

Ole already managed him from younger days and already speaks highly of him.............where as blanc French so means he can contain him more like we out of control. Bizarre

He's "loaned out" to Manchester United, his job at Molde is waiting for him when he's done in Manchester. Molde's hired a caretaker, not a permanent option.

Molde aren't permanently losing Solskjaer, he'll go back to them in May. Solskjaer isn't expected to win anything significant anyway, I'm sure he just wants to imprint an attacking style of football on a club he loves. It's a huge opportunity for him, how could he reject it?

First of all, he's "on loan" from Molde, he's returning there in May.

Second of all, he's absolutely loaded and would be even more loaded in the next few months. He has no need for more cash, ever.

Actually everywhere (Ajax, Barca, Bayern, ManUtd) Van Gaal implemented young players who were at that time or later a pilar of success (Kluivert, Mueller, etc. -> https://www.sportskeeda.com/slideshow/football-7-world-class-players-made-debut-under-louis-van-gaal ).

Zidane for example didn't build up a team, he had a perfect team and was able to take out the full performance (that's why I am doubting Zidane would be the right choice for Utd currently).

Anyway, van Gaal is a coach who builds a squad for the future (Barca and Bayern won the CL after him, with players he developed). He wasn't that successful in Manchaster but he gets to much hate which is injustified!

Well no, we’re not throwing everything on a coin toss. He’s only manager until the end of the season.

These guys have done feck all to lay an authority over Ole. They can feck off even if they tried that.

Phelan never actually worked with Fellaini and Mata. Only players left from the Fergie era are De Gea, Valencia, Young, Jones and Smalling. Could probably count Pogba and Lingard too.
