If we had Emery, we would have sacked him already. If we had the right people who could make correct assessments of our progress and who would also provide us with a plan that's a little bit more nuanced than "play the United way", "utilize academy players" and "buy British", maybe we would have the guts to sack someone like Pochettino after he had led us to a CL final.
That's what's keeping him in the job. The sentimentality of a disillusioned fanbase and the fact that Woodward can't make these assessments on his own, so he'll just wait until doing the only thing he knows (sack the manager) will be perceived with a sense of relief. For no other reason than to hide his mistakes under the rug in all the turmoil.
Until then, of course, Allegri may be at Arsenal, Napoli or Milan and Pochettino may be in Munich or Spain. Problems solved, another year with Solskjaer at the helm and with no big demands. Just spend the money from Pogba's transfer on Longstaff and Rice, overpay for a young PL talent (like Richarlison) and keep the fans biting their fingernails with yet another transfer saga that will not materialize (Sancho). A year from now the squad won't be good enough yet again but the signings will be promising. No matter the fact that we'll be a team full of midtable grafters and the usual suspects (Pereira, Lingard, Mata, Young, Jones etc.) will be on new shiny contracts, courtesy of the current manager. But that's OK. Just put on a happy face and talk about your vision of a bright future. Apparently, failure means nothing when you can claim that, at least, you're failing your way.
