Almost perfect today. Great win, let's keep going and hopefully dropping Lingard:D.

Oh dear, the #OleOut stats enthusiasts wont be happy today. Predicted goals are still more important that actual goals aren't they?

Nope but that stat can catch up to us, like last season.

Those 3 or 4 times Pedro ballooned it into the 3rd tier really did hurt us in the shots stats. I'm glad we weren't as wasteful as that.

And NBC showed the possession as 48 to 52, so they didn't exactly boss it either.

We’ll beat them at home and we’ll beat them away, we’ll kill any bastards that get in our way !

I hope he never starts or have to start Mata and Matic again. Looks like this combination is working so keep it that way.

Those stats are misleading. Chelsea were restricted to long-range efforts all game. Clear-cut chances were few and between (did they have any at all?)

The stats won't show you how devastating we were on the counter either.

I really enjoyed that, and it made me smile. Odd as it sounds, that match told me very little. This is because Chelsea really weren't Chelsea.

Best part: Tuanzebe on the bench in front of Smalling, Rojo and Jones.

I know this is going to be a very unpopular opinion but personally id prefer him to be starting every week on loan at Villa. Maguire and Lindelof is going to be very hard to breakup this season.

We normally get a bit of injuries at CB...

Expected goals have a better prediction value than real goals. Though saying that, we had quite a bit XG than Chelsea today.

Great start and a well deserved win. Made the right decisions in second half that changed the game.

I personally don’t like our 4231 formation with Pogba so deep. Prefer a three man midfield so Paul can roam around and use his creativity a little bit more.

I also prefer a staring line up without Pereira. Don’t think he offer enough quality in attack and his defensive contribution is sometimes questionable. Think Fred is a better alternative.

To be fair I think that will be Fred's position once he's up to speed. Started a bit later than the others in preseason.

That Chelsea team is bad. Lampard has got a torrid season ahead of him, man. A very torrid season indeed.

But Ole did a great job today, good seeing Matic and Mata benched and Axel given a spot ahead of the older CBs.

We conceded many soft chances to be fair, but hopefully that will be ironed out soon!

Great result, has to give him credit for that. Our back 5 looks solid, with AWB and Maguire having excellent debuts.

I still worry about the midfield though, the lack of control in the first half. I think we will regret not replacing Herrera.

I think this might be one of those rare seasons when we will make some signings in the January window.
It would make sense economically if we are in a tough struggle for top 4.

I will say first that it was great win, defence looked good, signings looked good and our counters looked good. No question about all that.

But this tactic where we allow teams to play and wait for counter attacks is not good in a long run. I am curious how we will play on away games against weaker teams. I hope that we will not give Wolves, Everton, Saints and other teams chance to dominate us like we did last season. It is very risky approach. If you concede first, you are in problems.

I have a feeling that he will do like what SAF did with the midfield. Have someone to ping the balls really quick to the pacy forward line instead of going for control. That someone being is Pogba of course.

It is risky but he will have to do it with the midfield we have.

Just one midfielder would do.

Err, Emerson had two shots inside the box, one crashing off an upright/post combo, and Barkley missed from about 8 yards.

True, but so is a high pressing team. Despite the stats showing Chelsea having more shots than us, most of them were harmless long range shots. I honestly dont think we have enough quality in midfield yet to go out and dominate teams like Liverpool and City do. What we do have though is loads of pace upfront and Pogba to hit those lethal through balls. If we become a lethal counter attacking team, other teams will be wary of committing too many players forward against us since they know we can hurt them on the counter

It not that long ago Leicester won the league relying on counters. Just because gegenpressing/tikitaka is all the rage now does not mean we have to play that way.

I agree, and also enjoyed the match while feeling that we weren't entirely playing CHELSEA, as such. Wolves is going to be more of a test, for the tactical reasons you mentioned, and a great check for signs of progress versus last season.

Fantastic result, extremely lucky not to be punished by the chavs early in the game. Our midfield is the weakest link, and if we are pressed by a top team we may crumble. Let's what Fred brings to the table, hopefully something good.

Chelsea have a very strong midfield and it is not surprising that they controlled the game. On the other hand, we have a stronger defense, and their attack and defense is not that good. That and they had a pop from distance a bit too many times. Apart from one really good chance in the first half, don't think Chelsea ever really opened us up.

Overall, apart from a sloppy first half, we played well. Good start, and hopefully that gives the team a bit more confidence.

Who else didn't make the squad today? Not including the younger lads.

Jones
Smalling
Rojo
Dalot
Fred
Sanchez

Anyone I've missed out barring the injured Bailly?

Ole said himself you'll see who is surplus to requirements by who doesn't make the squad.

Hopefully Fred and Dalot can displace Matic and Young for a place on the bench and then we'll be better off.

That not what he said at all.
On potential departures he said:
“There might be, yes,” “The thing is it’s not about who we don’t want here, it’s about who we want here, and you’re going to see that in the team selections and who’s going to be with us in the long run.”

It's the first game and we've got no injuries. By the time the Europa league starts we'll be using most of the squad. Rojo and Darmian will be gone with any luck.

I really like what I’m seeing from Ole, saying we’re nowhere near the finished article is pretty brave after winning 4-0 to Chelsea. Let’s hope we see those improvements in the coming weeks.

Remember whatever he says doesn’t matter apparently because he’s a liar and what not.

Hopefully if Ole and the team are showing strong run until December, Ed/Glazers will be willing to open up their purse for midfielder(s) in winter window.

Most likely not.
