If the media and some fans had an agenda - it's Ole Out for sure. They really want him to get the sack, and the pressure they are cranking up on him is insane. For this reason alone, I wish we had won the EL last season so they wouldn't be throwing around the statement on him not winning any trophies with world class team statement.
I don't recall another manager who has got this level of scrutiny in his role.
When he was appointed, it was he doesn't have any credentials to manage and just got the job because he is ex-player. (Nothing to do with his brilliant run as interim boss).
Then in his first full season, his team was just not performing and he needed to go or United were risking becoming a mid table team. (We finished 3rd).
The second full season, we had a bad start to the season (with no pre season) and it was all about Ole being out of his depth, and being found out. Bruno was saving him his job. We finished a comfortable 2nd - with a squad which was far below the quality of the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and even Tottenham to some extent. We went all season unbeaten away from home and picked up an insane number of points from losing positions (yet his in game management is poor and he can't affect a game!)
This is his third full season, and he has finally built a squad that could win us a title. The narrative is that we need to fire him to get the best out of this squad - after literally 5 games of Ronaldo coming in. He is only relying on 'individual brilliance'.
I have been super frustrated at times with our openness this season and some of the weak performances that we've put in. I don't think everything is (or should be) rosy for Ole. Fans and media should be critical of some of our displays - which he has also come out and said were poor and need to improve.
However, I'm shocked that there is so much pressure to give him the sack (which would have cranked up if we did not get that last gasp winner in midweek) despite what he done so far.
It makes me think people just want him sacked because:
1. Some pundits (Tim Sherwood in particular) are just bitter that they were not half as good when they got a chance at management. In Sherwood's case, if Ole wins the PL I don't know if he will have a personal crisis because it will be some sort of failure for him!
2. Ole comes across as too nice, and people don't want to believe that it can be the right way to manage a big club. (Although he is making some hard decisions all the time. Especially his treatment of VDB despite the outside pressure to play him).
3. Fans have forgotten some of the apathy that had seeped into the fan base under LVG and Jose. The football was dire and there was very little excitement watching United play. (We are anything but boring now, on both ends of the pitch). Perhaps, this is one of the reasons why match going fans seem to be largely "Ole in" (although I hate that term because it doesnt allow for any nuance).
If anyone here can identify another manager who has received this level of "calling for his head" - despite delivering better results than was expected from his team at the time, I'll love to get educated!
