It's not stupid and you're looking daft for trying to even go down this road in the context of the discussion being had. Do you just want to pretend Ole never managed Cardiff? You wouldn't complain if I mentioned the trophies won at Molde.

I'll explain this in a more simple and easily comprehensible way...

1) Poster makes a statement that Potter can't pick out an attacker good enough, even though he is managing a team just up from the Championship and, I imagine, don't have great pull or resources to get the best attacker that Graham Potter would have wanted in an ideal world. All of this in the context of discussion over Potter managing a bigger club or playing good football with the resources he has available at Brighton.

2) In response, I mentioned that Ole signed a lot of players at Cardiff and had them relegated, but now he's at Manchester United, he can sign better players and nobody is complaining.

Simple logic. Not an attack on Ole unless you are so fecking soft and protective of Ole that it hurts to see Cardiff mentioned.

Where was the common sense when Tuchel or Di Matteo or many other managers decided to come into clubs and win trophies with a team that wasn't 'his (their) team'? Or even just improve an existing team pretty quickly without any signings. I'd just leave this debate if I was you, use all of your 'common sense'.

Well, to be fair he did have the opportunity to bring in a lot of players, and he did, but it wanst really enough. Some of the players he bought were complete shit, others were ok, but Cardiff was a sinking ship and by that point Ole was way to inexperienced to save them.

They should have brought in someone like Big Sam or something, not someone who had just earned their badges

Correct. But, just to clarify, that wasn't my point anyway (to attack Ole). Just that Ole is a perfect example of how you can make better signings when you manage a big club and not Cardiff or Brighton.

I rate Potter very highly, but people need to understand that making a jump from lower mid-table side to a side that some people are expecting to win the title is a pretty huge jump. A lot of people have crumbled under pressure, and a lot of game plans have become ineffective because opposition teams will not play the same way vs Utd as they play vs BHA.

Potter doesn't seem to be someone who'd go ballistic and his demeanour is very good, but I'd rather see him make a jump to a bigger club first, see how he fares and then think of signing him.


As far as historical jobs and CV is concerned, here's a question for you - If you could hire one of Klopp or Potter, who would you sign? Because IIRC Klopp got relegated with Mainz so, I believe that should make him untouchable.

That’s where you’re wrong though IMO. If he doesn’t deliver this season the lack of one player (CDM) will be brought out. If Pogba leaves and isn’t replaced, that’ll be the excuse next season (and our striking options being 35 and 37 if we don’t get Haaland). Yet last season, during the middle of the season people were questioning Pep’s position at city without mentioning the fact that he didn’t have a proper striker. And then they went and won the league and got to the CL final.

Does that absolve Ole of responsibility if the coaching is poor? He picks the coaches, doesn’t he?

He does, and i said that in another thread, i don't disagree that it can be upgraded, but the coaching itself shouldn't be blamed on Ole.
We got a freekick coach this summer, and then scored on corners, so he is actually doing something about it.

I agree with all of that. I wasn't saying we should sign Potter though, somebody else said they play good football and that's when I commented. I think he's deserving of a chance at a bigger club with more resources (eg Everton or Spurs) if he keeps them going and I'm sure he'll get it.

In answer to your last question, it depends. If Klopp had just had Mainz relegated last season, I'd say Potter was more deserving of a shot. But, the caveat being that I don't know how good that Mainz team was or what their football was like under him or if they were favourites to go down. Dortmund obviously saw something and gave him a chance. Potter probably deserves that too. If he was German or managing in Germany then I bet they'd give him a chance.

Last season was comfortable in that regard, certainly. But two seasons ago we very much struggled to reach top 4. We needed a 9-5-0 run at the end of the season to finish four points ahead of fifth whom we beat on the final day in a game that could have gone either way. That was every bit a 'battle to make top 4'.

That was because we didn't sign a single midfielder or attacker apart from James and then Pogba got injured almost immediately after. We spent half that season relying on Lingard and Pereira as our creators.

But from the moment we signed Bruno(roughly 60 PL games ago?) we've been in "comfortable top 4' form ever since. Sure, it came down to the wire, but I blame the lack of investment combined with injuries for that.

And he pushed to get a set piece coach hired this summer. McKenna and Carrick aren't going anywhere, the board like them and have said multiple times that they see them as part of the long term future of the club so regardless of what Solskjaer thinks about them, they aren't going anywhere.

It's easy to sit here and say stuff like this without any knowledge of what's actually happening in training.

the lack of investment? If you’re talking about the roof, or the coaching staff, sure, but in terms of playing squad there’s few clubs in the world who have invested more.

Read the post carefully before you reply. I was talking about the midfield and attack at the beginning of the 2019-2020 season.
 
Building a fine collection of Champions League cockups. He has the squad now, sink or swim this season, very similar to when Lampard got his signings last year.
 
The biggest thing today was individual error But if we fail to qualify for the CL group again that doesn't matter.

Ole would have to be sacked

My gut feeling says we will never win anything major with Ole. He is tactically limited, and an awful game manager. Hope he proves me wrong.
 
That's our manager. That's his subs. That's his tactical adjustment.

I don't even know what we're debating. It's his 3rd year. It's clear that he's only good in dealing with games when they're going in his own pace and no problems occured.

Once the game gets complicated, once we're put in a tough situation, once we needs interference from the manager on the fecking touchline, that's what we get : Ridiculous subs + coward management + clueless football.
 
Can't really blame him.

He doesn't do the coaching, the tactics, or the subs.
 
10 men or not, that performance was shambolic & the tactics even worse. We still lack any identity to our play & struggle far too much. The coaches are not good enough & now they’ve got no excuses with this squad.
