OK, so what went wrong?

What went wrong ? We finished equal 3rd in Europe, better than last season. Scored truckloads of goals, played some great football. RVN an instant success, OGS made starting team & starred, lost league title to an exceptional Arsenal team, sent 9 players to World Cup, including Wes Brown who looks like finally making it big. Seba showed the right stuff in patches. Blanc, Silvestre had great seasons in defence. Becks was Becks. Giggs was Giggs. Gazza solid until nobbled. Scholes did what the boss ordered, difficult job at times. Butt tough & dependable. Phizza let nobody down when given the chance. Forlan promising.
What went f'n wrong you ask ? It's been a good season.

Ill agree with you because your telling the truth.
people seem to forget that in 1999 we only clinched the league on the last day, ie 2 games of a difference between this season.
We stayed in the FA cup thanks to a Giggs wonder goal and a last minute penalty save.
Everyone remembers how near the CL final came to fizzling out.

Theirs a fine line between succes & failure.

The plastic fans who havnt been around long enough to appreciate what Alex Ferguson has done for Man Utd wouldnt get this though.

That's true... Too many of us United supporters are spiolt. We're too used of winning trophies. The season hasn't been that bad. Look at the amount of goals scored! Not many teams matching that huh? To all u spoilt guys, we'll be back for sure, just wait cause the Red Devil will roam!!!
(remember all the trophies in the 80s )

Our performance would have been "great" had we been Southampton, West Ham or Spurs. To finish empty handed with the team we've got and the recent history of success is nothing short of disastrous. Arsenal and Liverpool did the double over us in the league. In fact they each beat us three times if you count the CS and LC. This has not been a great season by any stretch.

We should be dominant in Europe and domestically with the players we have. Accepting second best is the road to prolonged mediocrity

I agree, I sure as hell know that the players and manager won't be looking back fondly on this 'successful' season - and its because of that attitude that they've been so successful.
