What do you think was the problem this season and were you happy with the result? What needs to be done to improve next season? Is this team preferable to last years?

It seems laughable that the MU fans are down hearted after finishing outside the first two for the first time in 10 seasons...but this just shows the high standards tat they have set themselves.

It is even more laughable that some non MU fans think it is the beginning of the end for MU.

Nothing is more certain that come when the new season kicks off it is them that we all need to beat to get that elusive PL title.

I find it quite ammusing that you've lost so much ground because of your players' approach and attitude. ;)

I do think Arsenal are a better team, though United will be better next season.

Better performed than this season that is. The jury's still out on whether they'll be better than Arsenal.

Losing ground would be called progress? The rose-tinted specs come out from time to time, but that's pushing it ain't it? ;)

I agree that Arse have had a great season but once Ferguson sorts out the defence MU will be a tough act to beat.

It takes time for new players to gel into a defence. It even took Henchoz and Hyypia 2 or 3 months. 2 or 3 months is a long time as we found out this season.

In no particular order...

1. fecking up the whole team to accomodate veron
2. Veron fecking up
3. Selling our defensive linchpin
4. Barthez getting complacent
5. Tinkering
6. Playing like Keegan's Newcastle
7. Not having 4 top strikers to rotate
8. Poor quality subs bench
9. Alex gambling too much in what he thought would be his last season
10. Poor quality full backs

Shocking how much our team has declined. 9 fecking defeats, 6 at home.

Oh well, we might just give up now then..

Great list. But it doesn't look like you.... I'm afraid some "hard-core fans" is preparing to fire at you!

So I will post my simplifed version, IN ORDER:
1. Shit defence
2. Poor tactic and formation
3. Poor transfer in Veron and Forlan.
4. Depth of squad no longer exist in defence and forward.

You might want to also add another point - Veron in general. unsettled the camp, pissed of Keane BIG time and generally looking like the Pop-Up-Pirate.

Don't disagree. Seeing as all of the above are down to Fergie what does that say about the prospects for the next three years ?

I think a lot of the above are down to his planned retirement - I don't think he would have let this happen if he knew beforehand that he was going to have to live with it. Now he is staying he has got his work cut out to try and restore the strength of the squad - there's no way he wants those 3 years to be trophyless.

The thing that has cost us most the season has to be the defence, we have seen few good performances at the back and little cover from midfield. Larry White has grown more and more each game and Silvestre has also been terrific IMO.

We need a player to partner Lauren at the back, someone who is able to realistically play all season without getting injured, then Ronny\Brown can be cover. That way we may get some solidity.

I have also noticed that pissing around with the team has left us bare in terms of width, we have played a lot of games with a crowded midfield that has had no outlet!! Playing Scholes or Veron on the Left\Right isn't quite what I would call getting the best out of them, we just simply haven't had the cover for Beckham or Giggs (when he was played as a link). We could therefore do with signing a player like Damien Duff, if the rumours are true then that is great, he can play on either flank I believe and play the link role. That would just leave a decent centre half, there are enough targets out there and I just hope Fergie makes a mense by recruiting the right one.

It has been a dissapointing season for all in terms of what we are used to but at the same time we have played some fantastic football and have to build on that!!

Here's to next season and kicking some ass........ <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" /> <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" />

1) Complacency: All to evident. The team forgot how it felt to be trophyless. Now they willhave to prove themselves allover again

2) Poor early season form

3) Never rising to the big ocssion or winning went it matterd most i.e strange absence of character.

4) Poor poor defending :o

5) Scholes, Veron, giggs had terrible seasons! :(

We can all say what we think went wrong.

But what it boils down to is we lost the league, not for the first time as you'd think if you tok notice of the Press, but for the third time.

So we've been there, done it, and got the replica shirt.

Last two times didn't do us any harm, and didn't exactly do Arsenal and Blackburn a lot of good the following seasons.

1) Changing the system to 4-5-1 and the points dropped while the team tried to come to grips with it
2) The sale of Stam and the amount of time it took for the defense to start playing as a unit again
3) The inability to successfully integrate Seba into the team which at times resulted in too many players playing out of position
4) Shortage of proven top-notch strikers after Cole left. Dwight doesn't count because it's obvious he's never playing for United again and Diego's still unproven.

With the shortage of strikers, Ruud never got the rest he needed. For the last month now, I think he's been running on empty. And this was the time of the year when we really needed him at his sharpest. (And playing as the lone striker in Europe has only drained him even more...)

What worries me about Fergie - and I do love the man honest, even tho he's like everybody's embarrassing dad at times - is that he's turning into Maggie Thatcher.

Do you love him?

It seems to me that you feel you should and are battling with yourself to feel so..

I could be wrong tho..

As daft as that sounds..

Well I don't love him in the true sense of the word obviously. But I have a kind of affection for him, yes. As much as you can have for someone you don't know. I love what he's done for the club - but I'm not blind to his shortcomings either.

Simple really
You don't win anything with a poor defence and although individually we have improved we still only have an average defensive unit.
To add to this trying to accomodate Veron also caused upset
And a lack of cover in wide areas contributed

0-1 X 4 = zero goals and zero points from 4 at OT.

<img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> @ the bloke above who tagged Forlan as a 'poor signing'. He's been in England how long now? Fickle mancs! <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> ;)

I agree. It should rightly apply to an overpriced English striker who seem to excel at his defensive duties than doing what he's paid to do...errr scoring goals? (oops)

Yes, we were all disgusted with his mere 23 goal return last season.

We were all disgusted with his work ethic when he was used as a support striker at the start of the season. We're all disgusted with his 10 goals since February. The donkey should be sold.

;)

To the contrary, I hope you build your team around him and the other outstanding prospect Carragher.

What went wrong ? We finished equal 3rd in Europe, better than last season. Scored truckloads of goals, played some great football. RVN an instant success, OGS made starting team & starred, lost league title to an exceptional Arsenal team, sent 9 players to World Cup, including Wes Brown who looks like finally making it big. Seba showed the right stuff in patches. Blanc, Silvestre had great seasons in defence. Becks was Becks. Giggs was Giggs. Gazza solid until nobbled. Scholes did what the boss ordered, difficult job at times. Butt tough & dependable. Phizza let nobody down when given the chance. Forlan promising.
What went f'n wrong you ask ? It's been a good season.
