Nuno Mendes (Sporting CP)

Hope this isn’t like Eric targeting former players. But if it means Dalot never playing LB or LWB again I’m totally in.
Erik targeted players who didn't fit whatever he was formation he was trying to make. Casemiro when he wanted a ball carrying midfielder was just random as feck.
Mendes is a seriously good player, kind of player you'd want your team to be interested in regardless of who the Manager is. Guy really doesn't have any weaknesses in his game, he'd become a fan favourite very quickly if we managed to sign him.

The wingbacks is the position that really lets down our whole system at the moment so would be all for signing Nuno. While we’re at it could do with Frimpong for the right too. Our team would be totally transformed with pacey wing backs

From Sporting to Paris had me confused for a moment. Then i realised the thread is 4 years old. Blame the flu

Is he good?

I'm not having it, he'll sign a new contract soon.

He's a top player that would have his pick of clubs besides, I imagine he'll already be on great wages and SJR has put an end to paying too much on players wage.

His appearance numbers don't look very healthy. Is it because he is young & learning or because he is injury prone?

His contract is up in June 2026. So he should be available for a decent price.

I suspect one of the main reasons for wanting to leave is the fact his wages are far from great. Under £50kpw. Even if we double those it’s still decent value for a player that would transform us

He would want to work under Rubin Amorim, his old coach under a system in which he flourished.

People need to understand that we can have a thread about LB and top LB across the leagues, but there are limited LB who can thrive in a LWB position.

Didn’t Sancho tear him apart last season? I am not convinced especially with how many games he missed last season.

Injury prone recently, so he definitely looks like United material. I'd definitely be concerned if I was United, but maybe that is due to my PTSD from Phil Jones, Luke Shaw and apparently Mount as well. Talents who can't stay healthy.

Not sure why he wasn't in the squad in 3 of the past 6 matches. In reality, it comes down to the price. Get a good price for him, then good business. Stupidly pay over the top like United has done for years, then bad business.

Guess work.

I know the talent this kid has but it would take alot to get him to come in our current state.

Here's hoping though.

Not that convinced about him defensively but he had 5 assists from leftback last season, so as a wingback he's sure to be an upgrade on Dalot going forward

Only €27k/week according to Capology, which is nothing

He is the ideal player for the position that urgently needs addressing. Would also help address the lack of pace in our squad.

His injury record is bad and he wasn’t a cheap signing for PSG either. Around 40 million if I remember correctly? I was all for us signing him the summer he went to PSG to give Shaw real competition as he looked amazing at Sporting. I’m not so sure now to put it mildly. Really good player though if he and the manager want to reunite, if he can stay fit it’s a bit of a no brainier compared to someone like Hernandez but I don’t think he will. Big plus he’s a good age and is experienced. Ugarte coming in and adapting so well is another plus. Being in for the PSG cast offs instead of Real and Bayerns older players… At least these lads are the right age and profile. It’s starting to feel like Amorin could even be out before the end of the season if things keep sliding… but Mendes would be an asset to any manager anyway in a back 4 or 5
