Manchester United have sent scouts to watch Benfica midfielder Nicolas Gaitan, with the Benfica star on Sir Alex Ferguson’s radar, according to Portugese newspaper Record.

The Argentine has made 26 appearances for Benfica, scoring seven goals, since he moved from Boca Juniors in 2010.

And the 23-year-old has reportedly caught the eye of Manchester United numerous times after making the move to Europe, though Ferguson has stepped up his pursuit of the playmaker this summer.

A United scout was reportedly at a Champions League qualifying match between Benfica and Trabzonspor two nights ago to check on Gaitan’s skills, and Ferguson is considering whether to make a move now or wait until the next transfer period.

Ferguson is no doubt trying to build on United’s midfield, particularly with Paul Scholes retiring at the end of last season. And should Gaitan become available for the right price, if United decided against purchasing Wesley Sneijder, the club will no doubt have the free money to make some buys for what they believe are tomorrow’s European talent.

This, unfortunely, is the most likely signing we'll make, an unheard of South American.

He's nowhere near unheard of, he's played for his country. Unfortunately he didnt impress me

Some essential questions that need to be answered.

Can he play in a midfield 2?
Can he hack it on a rainy evening in Stoke?

I meant unheard of from the typical muppet point of view.

Oh.

Well to get the ball rolling on that front, if I recall correctly he was filling in for Messi on the right in the match I saw him.

Left footed, filling in for Messi on the right wing... The new Messi

Lad's we're getting the new Messi, shag the Sneijder/Nasri/Modric/Barton thread!

Gill also said you have to be world class to get in our squad. David Gill's definition of world class is Gibson and Obertan

How do you know that?

He said so himself the other day.

That's almost pretty much world class tbh.

Of course, you've got to be good to play for us. It's just that some people have a much stricter view on what it takes to be world class. I don't think David Gill has the same opinion as these people however and Obviously rates this club very highly, therefore he thinks if you improve what we have then you are world class.

The Argentine poster Scholesclass said he was a media punta which is basically the role Kaka played for Milan, he can also play wide when I've seen him, he's not a CM.

Because after Gill said we are going to sign a world class player, we have been 'very close' to signing Vucinic and now this lad.

You do know reports linking us with these players doesn't mean we're going to buy them?

Err yeah we've been also linked to Sneijder way more than these lads, so I'm not sure what your point is.

Good man. Wonder why he left, that shakespeare quoting cunto.

It was outside of the foot and he had some good attempts at goal too. Certainly did enough to suggest he's worth keeping an eye on

He's pretty decent, for some reason, I thought of him playing at Old Trafford after he had that shot.

Probably means he'll sign for Real Madrid.

Gaitán, who impressed during United’s 1-1 draw against the Portuguese club in a Champions League group fixture last month, has been watched repeatedly by Sir Alex Ferguson’s European scouting team in recent months.
As a result of interest from United, Inter Milan and Paris St Germain, Benfica have secured the 23 year-old to a five-year contract this week, which will see the Argentine more than double his annual salary to £2 million.
But despite increasing Gaitán’s wages, Benfica have been unable to increase the release clause within the player’s contract beyond the existing £40 million trigger fee.
United, who are also monitoring Anderlecht’s Argentine midfielder Lucas Biglia, remain in the market for an attacking midfielder after failing in summer attempts to sign Inter Milan’s Wesley Sneijder and Samir Nasri, who rejected United in favour of a move from Arsenal to Manchester City.

Although Gaitán has largely been deployed as a left-sided winger by Benfica in recent months, the former Boca Juniors player has regularly played in an advanced role behind midfield and attack, a position United have yet to fill following Paul Scholes’s retirement at the end of last season.

Manchester United eyeing up potential £40m transfer window move for Benfica's Nicolas Gaitan - Telegraph

Also Interesting line from Independent over him:

Madrid in the summer of last year.

The agent Jorge Mendes' links with United contribute to the sense that the Argentine playmaker will be a target next summer. Though Gaitan's agent is Rafael Irribarren, Mendes – who brought David de Gea to Old Trafford – concluded the deal with Benfica which delivered the 23-year-old to Lisbon.

Might be some legs in this due to the Mendes connection.s

Has anyone yet mentioned how he's massively overpriced at 40 million?

No? Good...I wanted to be original.

Telegraph and Independent going with Gaitan. Mirror and Mail going with Sniejder.

Who will win. Broadsheets or toilet rags.

I like how it says he can play behind midfield and attack and we've needed a player there since Scholes retired. I dont really think he's the answer to our defensive concerns. Oh and Biglia  We've been linked with Biglia and not Banega, of all the Argentine midfielders to be linked with. Someone has had a giggle there

He won't go for anything near £40m but will be very expensive anyway seeing as Coentrao who's probably around the same level and plays at less essential position cost above £20m.

we haven't done particularly well with argies so far, so maybe one'd have to come good

Gill said the person we bring in has to be World Class.

The term "world class" seems to be applicable to everyone who plays in the top 3 leagues in Europe nowadays and understandably so since most people only watch footie in those leagues.

Can I humbly suggest that we apply a new term "galaxy class" the next time for rating the real, your above average, your run of the mill world class players?

Example: Is Messi Galaxy class? Yes with a doubt.

Is Gaitan Galaxy class? Hmmm... probably only just world class.

:wenger:

I'm sure he is good enough to play for LA Galaxy :wenger:
