Is that accurate? Only the top 51 currently counts, so if a rookie is in the top 51 he pushes someone else out it. It would be particularly aggravating if their cap numbers were that bad in May.
I haven’t dug into the numbers, but that has been reported since the start of the offseason.

The issue being that many reports are fanciful, the same thing was reported for the Vikings and many other teams until some corrected it, which happens every year. I wouldn't be surprised if it's just a case of Bradberry having the least desirable contract, a quick look tells me that he was one out of three players that could have been restructured and free up the below 8m needed, one of them was Leonard who would free up 8.9m.

Some concerns about the salary cap are exaggerated, but taking a dead cap hit by releasing one of their better veterans they couldn’t trade because other teams saw the writing on the wall remains true. I don’t really see a need to defend Gettleman’s management in this regard.

I'm not defending him, I'm just questioning the tweet. I don't really understand the rational of releasing him when they didn't have to.

The fact they did though probably suggests they had exhausted other options? Why else would they choose to do this, if it was avoidable?

They didn't otherwise either Golladay or Leonard's contracts would have been restructured. My guess is that they wanted to trade or cut him and under no circumstance pay his full salary.

I’m probably being dim but I really don’t see the narrative.

What narrative? Contract restructures are pre built, the fact that they didn't use it means that they didn't exhaust other options. They deliberately chose to cut him instead of keeping him.

Is it ineptitude by the Giants, are they being somewhat ruthless, or do they just not care about cutting Bradberry & are simply moving on?

The narrative of, why would they make up a story if they just wanted to cut him? If they hadn’t made up the story, they’d have been able to trade him, most likely.

The Giants made up a story? I'm not following your point here.

Your assertion is that the Giants could have restructured the contract, if they wanted to, right? And therefore by definition suggesting that it was by choice they wanted to cut him.

If that’s the case, the narrative doesn’t stack up because it would have been in their best interest surely to push this point because I suspect if they did, they’d have gotten trade offers for him as the only reason they didn’t was because other teams knew the Giants had cap issues.

So to me, I really do just think that manouvering the cap situation was not as easy as you might be suggesting. That’s what I’m trying to say, I think

I see. Restructures are easy, they are pre built and don't require player consent. If reports are accurate the Giants did get trade offers but apparently the teams interested wanted to see the Giants keep a part of his salary. Now the issue is that he had a large cap hit and salary. Most teams don't have the room for it.

Also I didn't really have a narrative, I simply questioned a tweet that claimed something that is quite obviously wrong. The Giants had no obligation to cut Bradberry they simply chose to, maybe it was for cash reasons or they decided that having a Golladay restruture in their bag could be useful in the future.

I re-read your posts three times and I still don't understand it. I'm not that good in understanding NFL contracts though. I am friends with someone who works part time at Giants stadium and he was moaning about Bradberry release and Gettleman himself along the lines of what was posted in the tweet and implied that Giants had no option but to release him.

Yeah, I am confused as to what we’re actually debating. They had to do something and the most expedient ‘something’ ended up being Bradberry. But the subject has already dragged on much longer than it merits, so…on to trivia:

3 guys in history have posted a 1k receiving yard/5 rec TD/5 rushing TD stat line. One was Deebo Samuel just recently. Who were the other two?

hint 1: one or both might have been before some started following the sport, but they are not obscure names

They had options and chose not to use them. To make it simple there are 4 ways to impact your current cap, by extending, trading, restructuring or cutting a player. They tried to trade him but according to reports teams weren't willing to pay his entire salary and wanted to see the Giants keep a part of it, an extension was a possibility but I don't know if either parties were interested, restructuring a contract was the other option in this case they had two candidates Williams and Golladay, Golladay was the better option because he has several years left in his contract which means that the prorated bonus would be less impactful next year, in the case of Williams it would add 13m on next years cap number but it could be offset by extending him during the offseason. The other option is to cut Bradberry.

Since they didn't extend or restructure the players that would free up the cap space, cutting him was a choice.

Think I saw that in a Tweet during last season. I remember one of them because I knew him, forgot about the other one. Could've been CMC but I would've remembered him.

Marshall Faulk?

Marshall Faulk?
Correct. Hint #2: neither played the same position as Deebo, but two of the three played for the same franchise.

Faulk is correct, the third player is niners legend Roger Craig. Also the first player to put up 1k rushing and receiving yards.

fecking hell, anyone see Brady’s money for 10y on Fox? $375m. That is absolutely mental. Granted I have no comparison but to me that’s ridiculous amounts.

Romo is on a 10-year, $175m deal with CBS. More than double of that for Brady ffs

Even that contract is mental to be honest.

Being flippant because I know it’s more work than just the commentating, 175m is 17.5m per season. So circa 1m per game. So circa 330k per hour (rough time of a full length game). Bonkers truly.

I hope that Brady is as good as Romo and Manning but I have my doubts.

He will have the knowledge for sure. And he’s articulate enough in his interviews etc. But commentating either clicks or doesn’t and until he does it I guess we shall never know. Romo is excellent though, I can’t see Brady being better than him.

That's more than some mid level players in the NFL, surely?

Maybe he’ll have a surprisingly good sense of humor when he drops his hyper-competitive shell like Manning, but just the thought of it is so unappealing I’d rather listen to Aikman who is going to MNF.

Will still probably be better than Romo regardless though.

I don't disagree that cutting him was a choice that Giants made, but the guy cribbing said they had only shit ones. I actually do not know either Williams or Golladay at all, but the way he said it made me think that by taking the difficult decision to cut Bradberry even though he's a Pro Bowl candidate, the Giants recoup most of the cash. I do understand it a bit better now that you have explained it though, Thank you.

I think its way more than even the highest paid players?
QB, O-line (bar C), D-line, WR and CB earn more than that. Best paid LB is Leonard on $19m annually, best paid S is Jamal Adams at exactly $17.5m.

C, RB, TE all below that though, even guys like Kittle and Kelce.

EDIT: Oh, you meant Brady. I think only some of the top-end QB contracts edge $37.5m per year. Rodgers, Mahomes, Allen and Prescott probably.

That's fecking crazy. For a pundit who may or may not be good at the job? :wenger:
