Going for 3 points is the logical thing. But as people say to beat the Patriots you have to be brave, fight the conservative instincts.
The play itself was very tricky. I don't see how the defense can defend that kind of trickery but others have said above they should be able to read that.

Could be like Aikman in 1993 (well Jan 1994) after his concussion against SF - with only one week between games. He played conservative and well but not what one would have expected. Most likely still suffering from concussion symptoms. He wouldn't clear protocol these days (or mysteriously would because the league can't have a star QB miss the big game).
